1st Elk Hunt

Coming out to Colorado for the first time. I'll be hunting with someone who's been coming out for the last ten years so I won't be without some guidance.My Question is should I consider purchasing a Mule deer tag, we'll be hunting units 75 & 751, should I concentrate solely on elk or could I run into a Muley in these zones.I don't know when I'll have the money for another trip, so if I have a chance at a Muley I'd like to take it.

My dad went on the same hunt in 2004. They had no success on elk, and I told him to buy a deer tag, but he didn't. In 4 days of elk hunting, he had easy shots at 3 pretty good mulies, but he couldn't do anything because he didn't buy the tag.
