13 Preference Points Colorado

I am a non-resident with 13 preference points for Colorado. After studying the 2004 statistics, I figure it will take about 10 years to draw Rifle GMU 2, 10, 201. I don't care to wait that long and am considering burning my points this year. The second tier GMU's seem to be 61, 76 and 40. I was interested in 40 after seeing that residents are burning around 11 points for the RFW Pinon Mesa hunts. The downside seems to be lots of private land. After looking at the Landowner Tags advertisement on this site, the 61 tags go for a little more money than the 40 tags. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

LWC,

I am in the same boat as you, only I have 10 points.

I originally started building points for the sole purpose of hunting the Mesa Mood. One of my best friends manages the ranch. Now, NR's cannot apply for these tags. I have asked about unit 40 on public ground, and in my opinion, I would not do unit 40.

Much of the public ground is landlocked by the big ranches. You can get tresspass permission across ranch property to hunt public, but it is going to cost you an arm and a leg.

I may be wrong, but unit 40 sounds like a pain to me. I have pictures of some Pinyon Mesa bulls and they are nice, but getting one around the ranches may be more hassle than it is worth. I was hoping I could get some tresspass privledges, but it ain't gonna happen.

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking maybe a 61 muzzleloader tag might be the ticket. That tag puts you back in the rut as opposed to the first rifle season starting Oct. 15. I shouldn't have to contend with cow hunters either. Thanks again.

I agree unit 40 is a giant pain for public
access. I would do the 61 muzzle hands down.
