I'm going on my first elk hunt during the last week of August/ first week of september. I'll be archery hunting the south western part of Colorado (Sorry - don't remember the zone, but it's over the counter for archery... 73 maybe?). Be hunting at appx 7,000 feet forested hills, pre-rut.

Would like to read a few books before I get up there.

What are your recomendations?

Jesse:

I got a very good book from Dwight Schuh back in the mid-'80s: "Bugling for Elk." It's one of THE best books on early-season elk hunting (I pull it off the shelf every Summer). Though there's been some evolvement in equipment, and some strategies, over the years, elk are still elk, and the info in Dwight's book remains relevant. I think it should be in every elk hunter's library ...

Just thought of something else. Since this will be your 1st elk hunt, I don't know what experience you've had with elk calls and calling. A guide friend of mine, Steve Chappell, came out with a very good instructional CD last year: "Extreme Elk Calling." If you can't find it, let me know and I'll get you the info. BTW, he's originally from southern Colorado ...
