I'm going on my first Elk & Mule deer hunt. We are going to hunt unit 27. Anybody have any knowlege on this area. I beleive we'll be hunting some where near the Soldier Mountain area.

I could be wrong, but I thought the soldier Mtns were in units 43&44. Unit 44 being a controlled hunt and 43 a general hunt. I've hunted 43 before...

27 is the Upper Middle Fork Salmon River & there is a Little Soldier Mountain on the west side of this unit.

I haven't hunted that area but it's wilderness,it's rough, steep and the mnts there top out around 9000 ft. Good Luck!

Are you going guided? If not you will need a horse to reach it. I have hunt in 27 for 2 of the past 3 years.
Talk to you later.

First thank you to everyone for your replys. Jay; I'm going to go hunting with my cousin and her husband. I haven't seen her for a good 15 years and never ment her husband. They live in Idaho and have been hunting Elk for years. I'm just looking for all the infomation I can get from others who have hunted this area. You say you've hunt this area for 2 of the last three years; Any luck on those hunts?

When are you going? I've hunted that area a few times for deer. As was mentioned it's along the Middle Fork of the Salmon. It is nice country but be in shape. Everything is up and down.

I'll be arriving Sept 28, packing in on the 29th, scouting on the 30th and the hunting begins on Oct 1st. I am working out as much as I can and walking alot. I've quit smoking and hope to be in good shape by the time i leave. You say you've hunted the area a few times, any luck on deer or did you see any elk?

My hunting in that area has been for deer in mid November. The rut is going and we have done fairly well but you have to work hard for them. We always hope for snow to push the animals down a bit. It is a 3 point minimum area. All my hunting has involved packing the deer out on my back so I've learned to be very picky about what I'm willing to shoot. A normal day for us to to start hiking a couple hours before daylight and end up back in camp about the same after dark. It is not unusual to end up 6 or 7 miles from camp. I've seen elk while hunting in there although mostly cows and calves as the elk rut is done. It is great country but when you think you're in shape double your workout. You will still find screaming muscles you never knew you had but then again I'm sick because I love that feeling:)
