Moisture in Montana

Can anyone report if the Missouri Breaks, around Fort Peck had decent snowfall or moisture this winter? MM.

I will be over there next week, I'll let you know. Not looking good. I was to Shelby this weekend, was 14 degrees and windy. Mabey 4" of fresh snow there.

We have very little moisture here, February was the driest and warmest on record since 1909. The lake is predicted to go down another 8 feet by the end of July and the Lake manager said there is a possibility of losing a total of 18 vertical off the lake by the end of 2005. If you look at the average annual snow fall we are actually an inch and half above normal. The problem is that there will no runoff as there is no snowpack. There was not any fall moisture at all so the soils are just soaking anything that falls. In the past week we have picked up an little snow that has melted and rain is predicted for today and tommorrow. There is still time for spring rains but if they fail to come the countryside will be crispy brown in short order.

The upside is there was very little winter kill.

bittersweet, Did you go to Shelby on purpose? Just kidding, I was born there and still have a bunch of family there. Some are farmers so the drought is going to hurt more than hunting. mtmuley

Can you believe I bought a house in Galata sight unseen. (Went up to inspect it) It was cheap (imagine that) Thought mabey I would bet it away in a poker game. Actually, it will be a great hunting getaway for coyote, muley, pheasant, rabbit. Spent the night on the town. Alabi. Mint. Montana Club. To say that place is a little different is an understatement.
Last year looked bad too, the rain in June July made up for dry winter-spring. I have a few engines I put on fires with FS but would rather not have them out (honestly) I like to see a green August, and a blue sky (as opposed to no sky at all)

Sounds like there hasn't been much snow, the musselshell has been about dryed up. I am sure hopeing that area gets some good rains so those horn gods can do there thing. Waiting on a tag is tough on the planning for the fall, but without adequate moisture the elk and deer wont hit there potentials. The last few years it seems that the breaks are always really burnt brown by september, making it super tough to stalk as a bowhunter. MM ##~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~>

bittersweet, I've been to those bars. Hell, my father went to them. He was also born up there. Graduated from Shelby. Galata, now you're gettin remote! I actually like coming back to Shelby. Had a heck of an antelope hunt last year. Might try the Sweetgrass Hills for deer this year. mtmuley

My brother lives in Galata. Had to have a few beers with him. He got his papers for his Iraq term just a week before he was supposed to retire from service. I fish Tiber with him a few times each year.
The bartender in the Mint may think she can slam a shot of Vodka faster than I can swig a Coors, but, oh boy. She cant. Real fun and down to Earth people up there.

Less than 50% snowpack.

Many areas are closed to controlled burning.

Several wild fires have been reported already.

All-in-all. It is a pretty poor outlook for this year. Things may pick up if we get more of this spring snow much more. A lot of late spring and summer rains. Otherwise it may not be a very good year for hunting trophies.

crextin, I've been reading about the bad water situation out there. We got a little moisture here in the western part of the state this week, did you? Montana as a whole is in bad shape. I fear another year like 2000 and the fires over here. Pray for rain. bittersweet, I don't think you can find more down to Earth people anywhere than the folks up on the High Line. mtmuley

I think most everyone got some moisture in this last storm. It is no where near enough though. I do fear another bad fire season. Keep praying for more.

Should of been decent this year as all of SW colorado had a pretty good fall, winter and so far a decent spring. Could use a little rain right now though. I'm sure the units up there though were above average for moisture.

Yeah, perfect timing too. I was scheduled to fly from Farmington to Denver then on to Orlando for a week for training. Well needless to say all my flights were cancelled and I was unable to get a flight re-scheduled until Tuesday. So this is the second time this training class has been cancelled for some reason!!
I even had a bass fishing trip planned at Lake Okeechobee (spelling?) for the last day I was there, ruined my week.
