Last year on my groups Elk Hunt we were walking in on Public land opening day and were passed by a group of horses -we thought no big deal- until we noted they rode up the valley and herded the Elk up a ridge onto a private ranch to awaiting hunters that had been driven in before daylight-
I guess alls fair in *** NOT

has anyone seen this done?

There is a rancher up north of Hayden that was doing this and kept the Elk on a hill top by his men using Quads.
Was charging 1,500-1,800 depending on what size you shot. He had been nailed before by F&G but he didn't care, so must have been a slap on the wrist. This was back in 1999.

thats aganist the law in colorado. next you see that happen contact the game and fish or tell a game warden that is up on the hill at the same time.

Sniper,
This all happened on PRIVATE PROPERTY, but the ranchers hired help were doing the QUAD HERDING so the herds could not leave the ranch. Now if he had rounded them up off the ranch and chased them to his land, I don't know if that happened or not. But this owner cares less what anyone thinks and F&G only gave him a slap on the wrist for the 1st time caught.
Needless to say, will never go back to that area again.

even on private property it is aganist the law read the rules and regualtion hand book for hunting in colorado

Sniper,
Like I said above I won't be going back to that area, let someone else deal with it since the F&G didn't seem to pursue this rancher or his hired helpers.
Some of the other fellas parked on road watching said it had been going on for a number of years.

I saw something close to that in Unit 74 Southern Colorado. A rancher that had land bordering the public land had grazing permits for it and landowner tags for the elk and deer. So on opening day, first season he decided to round up all his cattle that were on the public land and push them along with the deer and elk over to his side of the fence. Won't furnish the detail's but I heard payback was a #####, turned out he lost several head of cattle that year seem's they died of lead poisioning.

He wised up fast and changed his routine the next year.
