If you draw a tag in AZ, and for what ever reason, can't hunt, will they let you return it and keep your points ?

nope
If you know that you will not be able to hunt then you can just buy a bonus point. Once you have drawn a tag it is nonrefundable and you lose your bonus points

Dons mess came into play when they added the additional tags after the draw took place. A unique event for sure and his reason was legit. Not quite the same as drawing and can't go due to scheduling issues.

Too bad if "stuff" happens; once a tag is issued, it's yours. If you are lucky enough to draw Arizona for elk, I'd hope neither Hell nor high water would keep you from hunting ...

My brother had drawn tags two years ago and his unit was shipped to Iraq shortly there after. The lady was very nice when she said "Sorry no, there's nothing we can do. I hope he makes it back safe".........So I'm thinking the excuse of "well I just can't make it" won't work real well..........

The one and only time they ever did this was the fall of 2001. If you had a verifiable excuse that prevented you from hunting because of what happened, they gave you your points and money back. It had to be proven you absolutely could not hunt because of the attacks. They have never done something like this before or since.

Last year, I tried to get a refund on my javelina tag because I broke my ankle before the hunt, they said absolutely no way. After that, they had the gall to offer me an unsolicited refund of my "extra" elk tag. At the same time they wanted to make it a $3200 elk tag next year. Yea, right. I guess if they offered that to all the "extra" tag holders, they should have let Don or anyone else who wanted a refund get it too.

Thanks, I had herd some stories from a few years back.
Gess I'll put in for some really good tags, because if I draw Az & New Mexico, I'll have to burn one tag.

If you draw and can't hunt in AZ, you can sign your tag over to your son or daughter, who is a junior hunter. A friend did this last year with his December coues tag, as he had killed a muley during the fall archery season.

Doug,

I think the passing of your tag to your child is for residents of AZ only. Correct me if I am wrong.

Well... Just whipped it out, the AZ regs....R12-4-12 does not specify resident vs. non-resident. I thought there was a discussion on this before indicating this did not apply to non-residents but looks good for them too.

Correct me if I'm wrong on this but I thought that if you gave your tag to your minor child you still had to be present during the hunt.

Well it happened, I drew bull elk archery tags in both New Mexico & Arizona.
New Mexico hunt ends 9-15, Arizona starts 9-16.

"Hello, boss, I think I got sick on my vacation, I'll need to take a few sick days, see you in another week".

When it rains, it pours.

What unit did you draw in both NM and AZ? One may be better than the other. Maybe that will make it easier to decide which to hunt if your time is that limited.

Anaconda has a great tag in both. Take as much time as you can. You can kill a great bull in both.

When you get more time call me again send me a PM.

The way my vacation works out, I really don't have many options. I have a full week, plus I can get a Friday or two. Looks like the best way to do it is take Friday Sept. 9 and the following week as vacation. Leave for New Mexico (16 hr drive from Calif.) around 2am, after a few hours sleep. Hunt till I get a bull or the season closes on Thursday (9-15) at sundown, then hightail it to Az. (4 hour backtrack)and be ready as the season opens at dawn, Friday 9-16. Hunt all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday am. Head home (12 hour drive) and if I have too, take the following Friday off, leave right after work on Thursday 9-22 and be in northern Az by dawn, ( no sleep for 24+ hours) and do the Fri, Sat & Sun. am thing again. I cleared the two extra Fridays with my boss today. I know the Arizona tag deserves more respect then two, 3 day weekend hunts, but that looks like the only way to give both tags a good shot.
It will work out to six days hunting in New Mexico, and a total of five in Az. split between two hunts.
Over the next few weeks, I'm going to do some seirous brown noseing, and see if I can pull an extra day for Arizona.

Are New Mexico tags transferable?

Also, if you sign your tag over to you child, you need to be within 100 yds of the kill when its taken.

NM tags are not transferable.

There has only been a few execptions of this.
