After 9 years of applying, I finally hit a limited entry tag! I've deer hunted this unit 7 or 8 times and have seen some good bulls. Does anyone that has elk hunted this unit have any suggestions? Please advise.

Never hunted the area myself, but I do have friends in Cedar City that say there are some monsters down there. Don't wet yourself when you see em!!
Good luck and keep a record of your hunt so you can tell us all the stories, from preseason scouting to the hunt and on to the taxidermist.

I know of a few friends that have had success down on the Monroe.

I would go to the Utah DWR web-site and print out the list of people who drew that tag in 2003 and 2004.

Then go to the white pages ( I use AOL.com ) and do a search with the names and match the addresses shown. If they match, you have a hit. You should be able to match about 60 to 75% of the names. P.S... if they have P.O. boxes for addresses, then it usually is some of the smaller outlining cities in Utah.

Make sure you have a map in front of you and write down everything they tell you: location hunted, dates hunted, dates killed, rutting activity, camp sites, wallows, hunting pressure, etc, etc )

Most people I call are more than willing to give you info on this "once in a lifetime" tag if you know what I mean.

Also print out the rifle and muzzle tags, they will give you some good info also.

Best of luck this year.

- If animals weren't made to eat, then why are they made of meat?
- Vegetarian : Old indian word for Bad Hunter.

That will be a great hunt.... Drew 2 years ago.. Best 2 weeks of hunting ever!! I live right near the mountain so if I can help let me know....

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

I drew out on this unit in 2000 and had the time of my life. Like someone else already mentioned the animals will move form there summer grounds to the breading grounds in Mid Augest first of September. One place that you'll be able to find elk during your hunt is arround the Upper Box Creek, Rock Springs, and Mannings Meadow area.

If you are limited on the ammount of time that you can take off for the hunt I would recomend that you save the time off for the last couple weeks of your hunt. The elk will be taking alot more during the end of your hunt then they will when it first gets started in Augest. Be pactiact and take you time. Way to many people take the first bull that they see. There are plenty of elk on the mountain just take you time to make sure that you get the one you want.

My 72yr old father has drawn the early rifle tag, should be fun! My family has been hunting the unit since before there were elk on it. I'd love to keep in touch sicne you'll be hunting right before our hunt starts. I'll be on the unit a lot this summer and would be interested in sharing notes. With all the water it's going to be an awesome year!

400bull has some pretty good areas to start. Don't forget about the north end of that unit. there are some good bulls there also. Don't shoot the first 350 bull you see. there are plenty of those. Good luck. need any info let me know.

You have hit the jackpot my friend. Monroe is an excellent unit and a very beautiful mountain. There is a ton of atv trails all over the mountain so getting around is real easy. There is a lot of good areas to hunt though so come a week early and enjoy the scouting.

Thanks for the specifics. I'll start scouting the areas you mentioned memorial weekend. I'm familiar with the North end of the unit but not the center or south. I'm going to be a little pressed for time this fall so I'll probably only hunt the last 10 days of the season. What I've seen on the Northern end of the unit suggest that last week will have the elk as fired up as they get during the archery season. It is my sense the rut probably peeks the following week. Are you aware of any specific wallows that are off the roads far enough as to avoid the atv traffic? I'm a little concerned about all the general archery deer hunters who are looking to shoot their buck from their atv--this has been an issue up north. With all the moisture we've received, antler growth should be outstanding. Given what you saw in 2000, what kind of bull would you hold out for? My sense in years pasts has been there are lots of 320-340 bulls--at least enough, that a guy could probably count on an opportunity on one of these the last few days. Any thoughts?

Last year I helped my son & his friend hunt archery deer on the Monroe, toward the end of their hunt herd bulls had groups of cows in almost every secluded area on the mountain, you will have "no" problem finding nice herd bulls, bugling them in however, may be hard since so many people mess with them.

Cass

I will definitely look for you. I'll let you know of any good bucks I come across while chasing elk.

Chances are if we go up to where I know the bulls are, we'll come across some nice bucks and hopefully i'll get a shot at one.
With the water situation as it is, I know where there's msot likely gonna be a 7pnt on the south end during the first few days of the archery deer hunt.
