I just found out that I have the honor of hunting on Mt.Dutton
this year. I drew a any weapon early tag. I have not had the
opportunity to visit this area in the past and I was wondering
if there is anyone that can start me off in the right direction.
I will appreciate any and all the information I can get.

You can start by giving me the tag! lol
Sorry, I don't have any usefull info for you. I just started getting elk points.........1 down, about 12 to go! :)
Good luck with your hunt!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-25-05 AT 02:54PM (MST)[p]Lien2, if you have one point... you will need alot more than 12 to draw by the time it gets to you! There are over 20,000 people that have 1 point. and a bunch more with 2 points... you might get it done in 25 to 40 years.

I've spent some time on Dutton deer hunting over the years and I can give you a head start on where I've found the elk most frequently. One morning a few years back, I counted 20+ different bulls on opening day of the deer hunt! In fact, half of my 9 elk points were accrued pursuing a Dutton MZ tag. I think you will benefit as much of the unit has difficult access. Its very thick on the North end with limited access. The South and center have some prime areas, but in both cases, it takes some effort to get away from the ATV trails. Send me a PM at [email protected]. I'd be happy to get you started provided you promise to share some pictures! I'd offer to show you around but I've got my own scouting to do--I hit a Monroe Mt Archery tag after 9 years!

Agreed. Actually, I'm looking into Utah's Fishlake, Manti, or Boulder units.
Regardless, I know it's a long road......but I'll never get there if I don't start.
Thanks for setting the record straight though.

Shark,

Been pretty successful on the Dutton. 345 '02, 353 & 406 '03, 330, 335 & 345 '04. PM me and we'll see what we can come up with.

You are one very lucky hunter, we outfit hunts in that area if your interested, and have harvested some awsome bulls.

THIS COMES TO A SHOCK TO ME WHY WOULD ANYONE SPEND YEARS TRYING TO DRAW OUT AND PUT IN FOR AN AREA THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS A JOKE. THEY HERE ABOUT SOMEONE TAKING A 400 PLUS BULL AND THEY ALL PUT IN FOR DUTTON A TRUE HUNTER HAS DONE HIS RESEARCH YEARS IN ADVANCE AND WILL STICK TO UNITS THEY KNOW AND MOST UNITS IN THE STATE OF UTAH HAVE HAD BULLS PUSHING THE 400 MARK THAT YOU DONT HEAR ABOUT WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A FEW .PEOPLE SHOULD NOT CHASE ODDS AT ALL UNLESS THEY KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.IF THERE WAS A RUMOR SOMEONE TOOK A 400 BULL OFF OF DIAMOND MOUNTAIN WOULD MOST PEOPLE WHO KNOW ANYTHING SWITCH HA .HA .

Obviously if you are a nonres and haven't stepped foot in a unit there is little you can do but apply for a reputable unit and pray that it is good. I believe the fun part about playing the draw game is doing the research. If a guy does his homework correctly it will definitely pull the cards in his favor.

It seems like a lot of guys tend to go with units that are recommended by hunting agents, etc. Unfortunately hunting agents may often have other motives so their recommendations may mean squat! It's pretty satisfying doing all the work yourself and having a successful hunt!

To me, the next exciting thing after drawing a great tag is the research, scouting, and exploring of new country!

I AGREE A NON RES DOES NEED TO GO OFF THE RUMOR MILL AND GOOD SOLID ADVICE FROM SOMEONE THEY CAN TRUST BUT TO MANY RESIDENTS ARE PUTTING IN FOR UNITS THAT THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEY NEED TO GET OUT OF THE TRUCK AND DO SOME SCOUTING THEMSELVES BEFORE THEY PUT IN FOR THE UNIT LIKE YOU SAID RESEARCH IS HALF THE FUN BUT DONT DO IT AFTER THE FACT.DO IT BEFORE AND AFTER AND RELY ON FACT NOT THE RUMOR MILL AND REMEMBER ONLY YOU CAN FIND THAT BULL OF A LIFETIME SOME HUNTERS IF THEY ARE SMART ARE GOING TO STEER YOU AWAY FROM THEIR GOOD HUNTING SPOTS SO THATS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT

rutnhard, you sound pissed that your hot spot on Dutton was made public and you didnt draw it. Man, this sight is a lot of helping other hunters, not just a braggin board. Give the guy credit for doing a little research and choosing the unit he did, Lighten up.

They had some fires up there that cleared out some thick patches of black pines, these areas are productive. I think that by loosing some of the timber it has made some bulls exposed that would have otherwise never have been seen.

RUTNHARD;
Please forgive me for taking YOUR TAG from you..
What you don't know before you open your mouth can
make you sound like a fool.
I originally put in for the Wasatch mountains area
because that is where I have hunted with great success
the past 26 years. I, obviously like alot of hunters
did not draw the unit I was going after.
The way I received the Dutton tag was through the
DEDICATED HUNTER PROGRAM. You see if you don't harvest
a deer, and turn your tag in on time, you are entered
into a draw with every other DEDICATED HUNTER that
decided not to harvest a deer. Can you imagine my
suprize when I opened the letter from the DWR stating
what I had just received. Believe me, there will be
a bunch of weekends spent scouting Dutton this summer.
I was not looking to be critisized by you when I wrote in
looking for information. Just looking to start off in the
right direction. Thanks to all that have written back
with positive remarks.
