...THE STATE WIDE YOUTH HUNT, B.S... I think it is an bass ackwards way of getting youth excited about hunting what intrest is it going too generate in a 15 year old kid too go out and have his dad shoot the only big bull he'll ever have the oppertunity too hunt in most cases... These kids should have too cut their teeth on spikes like the rest of us did... Yes I have two sons and I hope they have the oppertunity to draw a tag one day but they should have to wait their turn in the same pool as everyone else. ~G4

G4--
I highly agree with you on this point! It is BS!
I think a kid should learn to walk before they run.In my day even
if you shot a cow it put you on a high that it took you all year long to come down form, come to think of it I'm still that way.
Like every thing else kids have to have the best of everything.
Drive by the high school and take a look at what kids
are driving now days. It's not gran-dads old hand-me-down.They want atleast what dad has or better and dad gives it to them! But
I can only say what I see in my neck of the woods:RIMROCK

What are you guys whining about? Have you ever hunted with a young one on one of these hunts?

It's one of the best ideas the DWR has put in place in a long time. These kids rarely shoot big bulls, but they do get to hunt them at a time when very few people are out and about. The elk are bugling and it's pretty incredible to see the excitement.

There are many kids who just don't care and probably shouldn't be out there, but the reason for the hunt and the vast majority who get kids hooked significantly outweights the few bad apples in the bunch.

Find one of these kids who's drawn and go help them have the hunt of their life time instead of complaining. I think you'll find it's a pretty good deal.

Now if my 15 year old could just draw before he turns 19. LOL! With the luck in my family (0 for 20 years on elk permits) I don't plan on it happening any time soon :)

Cheers,
Pete

Wah, frickin' wah! Hurry call whine-1-1, and get the wham-bulance on it's way.

Pete hit it on the head! The only thing I wish the DWR would change is the let them hunt a LE elk unit instead of just the any bull units.

By far one of the best opportunities for the kids in Utah!

'It's all about the gut pile'

Good thread, I think that we should bring back polio, teach these damn kids some humility. Maybe roll back some child labor laws too.

What kind of dad would shoot his kids bull? I hope you don't have kids GFOUR!

LAST EDITED ON May-02-05 AT 11:19AM (MST)[p]Oh my, I can not belive I am reading this.
Tell you what, you come and see the excitement in my sons eyes and stomach nerves from excitement that he experienced just on his first turkey hunt. He is ten and hes been going with us since he was six years old. Hes been with us on the elk hunts, his excitement is still the same. Nothing gets handed to Juniors nor will it ever. He was up at 3:30 a.m. gettin ready just like we were. He is out with us on our elk hunts excited, ready to go, just waiting for his chance to draw a elk tag now. Oh and lest I forget my daughter when she was 11 getting her first elk, the excitement and awe, and the tears of happiness that she showed hum...
Its not a bowl of whip cream for them, and I sure hope you do not think that! They have to work just as hard, we do not shoot the animal for them, nor would we ever. If they miss they miss, if they dont get an opportunity then so be it they know this is life.
My kids know nothing is just given to them, and they sure as heck do not take us for granted, we wont let them. Please do not think that our youth do not deserve to be drawn, that is just not right! Our youth is our hunting future, without them hunting will die a long slow death and no one will be around to save it!
JstMe

You are just PO'ed because a kid gets to hunt while you're at home watching Monster Bulls IX and choking your chicken.

If a kid gets a bull on a youth hunt, you can be sure he will share the photos and the story with others, more so then if he shoots a cow or a doe. That leads to a larger amount of excitement in the other youth, and interest in hunting expands expotentially.

What a poor excuse..."they should do it how I had too" You should want kids to have it better then you did, not the other way around.

" What a poor excuse..."they should do it how I had too" You should want kids to have it better then you did, not the other way around. "

Ain't that the truth, good post Grasshopper.

Looks like a lot of support for the kids here. Here is one more supporting the younguns. The report that I got from the Utah DWR just a week or so ago show that the number of youth hunters have been declining over the past 5 years. We need to do everything we can to get kids interested if we want any chance of keeping our sport/tradition around.

Ok you guys helped me see the lite on my wrong thinking, the guy
that knows so much about choking his chicken helped alot too.
Hmm he gets boys up in the wilds and I wonder whats on his mind?
Maybe we can work it out with the dwr to let whole scout troops
go on any bull hunts,Ya.. 30 or so tags to troop 338 on the Manti!:RIMROCK

<IF IT BLEEDS WE CAN KILL IT>

You might want to check your facts Rimrock and G4 because as I read it those youth hunts only apply to General any bull units, not Limited Entry units. You won't see any of those "boy scouts" hunting the "Manti". We're talking about general units that you and I both can get a tag for each and every year.

I say let the kids hunt. Hunting as a kid is the only thing that kept me from becoming a delinquent.

Just my two cents.

GFOUR

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR FRICKEN PROBLEM IS!!!

EVIDENTALLY YOUR KIDS DIDN'T DRAW OR YOU'RE AFFRAID YOU'LL TAKE THE FIRST SHOT AWAY FROM YOUR OWN KIDS???

OR!!!

MAYBE YOU'RE AFFRAID YOUR KIDS WILL TAKE A BIGGER BULL THAN YOU,I HOPE THEY DO!!!

THE KIDS CAN ONLY DRAW THE TAG ONCE,WITH HUNTERS WITH 13 BONUS POINTS MORE THAN A YOUNG HUNTER JUST GETTING OLD ENOUGH TO START APPLYING FOR THEIR FIRST HUNT/BONUS POINT I SAY "LET THEM HUNT!!!"

NOTHING WOULD MAKE ME ANY HAPPIER TO SEE A YOUNG HUNTER TAKE A RESPECTABLE BULL,ALL ON HIS/HER OWN,NO MATTER THE SIZE OF THE RACK,WITHOUT THE AID OF DAD DOING THE SHOOTING!!!

REMEMBER:THE DWR IS NOT HANDING THEM AN LE ELK PERMIT!!!

IF THE DWR CAME UP WITH A DECENT PERMIT FOR YOUR AGE CLASS (WHATEVER THAT IS) WOULD YOU CONSIDDER IT OR WOULD YOU JUST SAY TO HELL WITH IT???

THESE ARE NOT GUARANTEED 350"+ BULL HUNTS,NEVER HAVE BEEN,NEVER WILL BE!!!

I bet you do most of your huntin' at the Neverland Ranch.

Nimrod38,

That 2nd post of yours had me crying a bucket full of tears!!!! And to think you had your feelings hurt because the DWR is promoting hunting for our youth!

I would waaaaaaay rather one of my sons shoot a big bull than myself. Maybe you ought to make a few more of your intelligent posts to try and change our minds (the scout post was right up there with...........well, nevermind).

The only bobcat waiting for another well thought out comment from this idiot!!

BOBCAT, MY PROBLEM IS THAT, WHEN I WAS A YOUTH I WENT ON THE GENERAL SEASON HUNT WITH EVRYONE ELSE ANY BULL OR SPIKE BULL IT WAS ALL THE SAME, IT WAS FUN TO GO OUT WITH MY DAD AND ALL THE OTHER GUYS IN THE GROUP AND I LOVED IT I WAS DAMN GLAD TO GET THE CHANCE TOO SHOOT A SPIKE LET ALONE ANYTHING BIGGER... BIGGER WAS A DREAM... A DREAM IM STILL WAITIN FOR, I DID NOT NEED A HUNT SET APART FOR THE YOUTH... WHY DO THEY NEED THERE OWN HUNT?... I KNOW THEY DONT GO TO LE AREAS, BUT WHY SOULD THEY GET FIRST CRACK AT THE FEW ANY BULL UNITS... I WANT MY SONS TO HAVE THE OPPERTUNITY TO HUNT BIG BULLS IN UTAH ONE DAY AND IF THEY ARE LUCKY AND DRAW A LE TAG ILL BE THRILLED FOR THEM AND RIGHT THERE TOO SEE THE EXCITMENT ON THEIR FACES....BUT THEY'LL HAVE THAT SAME JOY WITH EACH SPIKE...THEY DONT NEED A HUNT ALL TOO THEMSELVES... AS FOR THE LE HUNTS THEY CAN GET IN LINE WITH ALL THE REST OF US AND WAIT THEIR TURN... YES IT PISSES ME OFF EVERY YEAR TOO SEE 14 YEAR OLD KIDS DRAW WITH NO POINTS DRAW. WHILE OTHERS " SAY MY DAD" FOR EXAMPLE WHO HAS PUT IN EVERY YEAR OF HIS LIFE SINCE THEY CAME UP WITH THIS LE SYSTEM,EVEN BEFORE POINTS WHERE A FACTOR. HE GETS THE BIG "UN" ON HIS LETTER EVERY YEAR.... I THINK ITS HIS TURN BEFORE SOME KID ~G4

G4

I KNOW THE "UN" FEELING!!!

IT MIGHT MAKE YOU MAD A 14 YEAR OLD DRAWS BUT IF THEY (DWR) HADN'T OF DONE SOMETHING WITH THE ORIGINAL POINT SYSTEM THERE WOULD OF BEEN KIDS THAT WOULD OF NEVER DRAWED A TAG IN THEIR LIFETIME!!!

CAN YOU IMAGINE BEING 90 YEARS OLD AND NEVER DRAWED A TAG IN YOUR LIFE???

SOMETHING HAD TO BE DONE!!!

I'M NOT SAYING THE POINT SYSTEM IS FAIR,I DON'T MIND SEEING YOUNG KIDS DRAW,WHAT GETS ME AGGITATED IS WHEN A MIDDLE AGE CLASS PERSON JUST STARTED TRYING TO DRAW LAST YEAR AND PULLS A LE TAG WITH JUST ONE POINT & THEN BRAGGS ABOUT IT!!!

IF YOUR KIDS WERE TO GET IN LINE WITHOUT SOME OF THE PERMITS GOING TO YOUNGER HUNTERS YOU MIGHT AS WELL THROW THE TOWELL IN NOW,IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN,IT MAY NEVER HAPPEN FOR EVEN PEOPLE WITH QUITE A FEW POINTS TO THEIR NAME!!!

YA,I'M STILL WAITING FOR THE DREAM ALSO,IF THEY TAKE THESE LE ELK UNITS DOWN TO A 3-4 OLD AVERAGE AGE CLASS THE DREAM IS PRETTY MUCH OVER!!!

RATHER THAN SCREWING WITH AGE CLASS,THE DWR SHOULD OF SAID,WELL BOYS THE LE ELK UNITS ARE DOING WELL,WE ARE GOING TO ISSUE A FEW,(NOTICE I SAID A FEW!!!)MORE PERMITS FOR MAX POINTS HOLDERS & NO I'M NOT THINKING OF MYSELF,I DON'T HAVE MAX POINTS NOR WILL I EVER HAVE MAX POINTS,HOW MUCH FAIRER THAN THAT COULD YOU BE???

THESE LE ELK UNITS WERE NEVER SET UP FOR THE OPPORTUNISTS!!!

THE OPPORTUNISTS SHOULD BE HUNTING OPEN BULL AREA'S RATHER THAN WHINING & WANTING TO SCREW PRIME LE UNITS UP BUT THE DWR IS SO MONEY HUNGRY I WONDER SOMETIMES IF THEY'VE EVER CARED ABOUT QUALITY???

WELL I GUESS WE CAN ALWAYS HUNT THE OPEN BULL UNITS,FOR SOME REASON I JUST CAN'T GET EXCITED ABOUT A RAGHORN UNIT!!!

BY THE WAY,SPIKE ONLY UNITS "SUCK",IT TAKES ALOT OF SMALL BULLS GROWING UP TO MAKE IT TO THE AGE OF A TROPHY BULL,WHO THE HELL CAME UP WITH THAT PLAN???

IF WE WERE TO SET UP A TWO POINT ONLY MULEY HUNT JUST WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD HAPPEN,I WON'T ANSWER,YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS ONE!!!

THE ONLY bobcat SUGGESTING:LET EM LIVE,LET EM GET BIG,LET A FEW TROPHY HUNTERS HUNT THEM,LET THE OPPORTUNISTS HUNT ELSEWHERE!!!

Are you freakin' kiddin me? I cannot believe that as a father you would sit there and whine about your kids having the opportunity to harvest a big bull due to a youth hunt!! You suck......

GFour, you are pathetic. To say you have two children of your own and say that the youth hunts are BS. That is rediculous on your part. Don't you want to see more kids out in the hills? Just because you may have seen a bad exp. on your part does NOT mean that you have to belittle a great hunt. I, myself have hunted these junior hunts, it has been a few years since I have been able to draw a tag. I can tell you one thing though, there is nothing like the feeling of a kid taking his first buck or bull with his dad present in the situation. The youth hunts just give kids a chance to hunt. If they like it then when they hit a certain age they are able to hunt and draw like the rest of us, but if they don't no one is forcing them to hunt. Quit your b!tching about this, you are an @$$ to even say something like that and then call yourself a father.

-Cass

both my girls busted there teeth on the youuth hunts.
they both cried with excitement on their first kills,
they were so overwhelmed notted up guts and all.
now they join me on the old foulks hunts.
and still beam from ear to ear when they bring home the back straps.
i encuraged them to shoot the big ones.
if they shoot a larger deer than me big deal.

I have 4yr old son and I can't wait until he can hunt with me. If he draws a special youth permit, which I will apply for, you better believe we will take advantage of this.

Some of you need to chill out about this...

muleyman

I hope for your kids sake that they never draw a LE tag, cause they'll prolly get their a$$ whooped...."It was MY turn"!!!

'It's all about the gut pile'

Do you know what I love? This thread. It buries my speech and the ass whoppin' I was taking.

Give 'em hell bess. Is the youth hunt not a general season any bull? What is wrong with that? If you can let junior bust a branch antler bull on general season, then good on them. Hell, let them shoot two.

Opportunity: The chance to take you or your family on any hunt.

Opportunist: The chance to wiggle your way into an LE tag through politics without regard to the herd or future.

Big difference. Give those young ones all the opportunity they can take. The youth hunt in my eyes is an opportunity for young folks that they might otherwise not get.

Maybe you should rethink your stance G4.

I cant believe it!! This is all messed up. Go youth. The bad part about it is the Elk really cant handle another hunt. Lets see youth, archery, general, muzzleloader, cow season, and extended archery season in some areas. All on the same heard. That is non stop pressure from Aug to Nov. What a great feeling to see your best friend's dream come true. Be it son, daughter, or friend. Ya know what I hate. I hate it when they don't suceed at my expense the youth that is. But then I am not that greedy. I like it when they smile and their dreams come true. I hope your dreams come true. But not at some kids misfortune.
Rut

First off, I'd like to apologize for the second post I made on this thread. I got way out of line--it was a defensive reaction to the volgarities and such. I stated my opinion in the first post, as I perceived G4's posted topic. Some came back with their own opinions on the topic which is great, as I do like to read different points of view.

This isn't a whining or I got my feelings hurt, thin-skinned,(like I know some would believe) post. Heck, it isn't even intelligent, but I hope that you can read this for what it is.
:RIMROCK ---> Alias Nimrod 38 the chicken chokin'idiot--I deserved it!

Now can I get some feedback on an idea: If you were to draw an LE or once-in-a-lifetime tag ((-IF- it were LEGAL to do)), would you let a JR hunter fill your tag? I know that it wouldn't be the same as them having drawn their own tag but it might be a thought. (I do like to take kids hunting--some of my friends that I use to hunt with brought them along for years.):RIMROCK

MIKE

IF IT WERE LEAGAL,YA THATS FUNNY!!!

IT WOULD BE KINDA LIKE SOME OF THESE OLE BOY'S 97 YEAR OLD GREAT GRANDMOTHER TAKING A 397 BULL ON AN LE UNIT!!!

OR MAYBE A TROPHY GOAT UP ON TIMP AT 90 YEARS OLD!!!

I DON'T SEE WHY A KID CAN'T DO THE SAME,WAIT A MINUTE,THERES LAWS FOR THAT KIND OF STUFF!!!

YA,IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME!!!

THERES NOTHING MORE FUN THAN WATCHING KIDS GROWING UP,PART OF THEM GROWING UP IS SOME OF THEIR FIRST HUNTS!!!

THERE FIRST BUCK FEVER!!!

THEIR FIRST HIT OR MISS!!!

THEIR FIRST GUT JOB!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING IT SURE WOULD BE NICE TO BE A KID AGAIN!!!

I guess I don't understand' --I know I should.
I draw ,say the 3 corners and I want to take a jr hunter along and
if the opportunity comes up let him shoot.I no it would never happen that way,but is it a bad idea?:RIMROCK

RIM

IT'S NOT A BAD IDEA AT ALL!!!

I'M ALL FOR GIVING YOUNGER HUNTERS A LITTLE MORE OPPORTUNITY!!!

HAVE YOU GIVE YOUR KID THAT OPPORTUNITY???

THE ONLY bobcat WONDERING???

Bobcatbess
Yes I tried with my daughter but early on she let me know she didn't want any part of killing animals as for my son he died before I got a chance to know him.I have taken the kid from down the street fishing,he always went hunting with his dad.
Oh well I shouldn't hog GFOUR'S thread
Thanks for the reply:RIMROCK

Youth need to have a good experience every once in a while to keep them motivated. They also need to know that hunting is hunting and not shooting/killing. A mix of harvesting an animal and times when they don't harvest an animal are both important lessons. However, most important of all should be the experience of being out in the mountains with family and friends. Of my kids, one has enjoyed harvesting her first big game animal, a mule deer this past hunting season. This was her third hunting season. My son has not harvested a big game animal yet, but this past season was his first. However, he was one of the lucky youth who drew a youth elk permit for this year. He's excited about this hunt and so am I. My daughter is not, because my son drew a permit before she has (she may never draw this permit).

We hope to find some elk (the Uintah Mountains are big country) and he will try and take the first bull that presents himself (spike, raghorn, whatever). This is not going to be an easy hunt for either of us, but we will spend time together and make some memories that we may not have had the chance to make without this hunt.

I applaud the UDWR for providing these types of hunts for our youth. In fact, I'm almost to the point where I would rather just take my kids hunting and see them learn and gain a deep appreciation for this sport. I want to pass on what I learned from my Dad and will always cherish those times together with him, now that he is gone.

Smokepole

NOW WASN'T THIS FUN... I AM NOT AGAINST THE YOUTH, I LOVE MY BOYS, AND HOPE THEY LOVE TOO HUNT... WHAT I HATE IS THE DWR CREATING NON-ESSENTIAL HUNTS, LOWERING AGE CLASSES ON PREMIERE ELK UNITS AND TRYING TO MESS UP THE FASTEST GROWING TROPHY ELK HERDS IN THE COUNTRY... I HAVE COMPLAINED ALOT ABOUT NOT DRAWING A TAG, BUT THE FACT IS WHEN I STARTED THIS PROCESS 350" WAS A MONSTER BULL, MAYBE JUST MAYBE BY THE TIME I DRAW 400" WILL BE COMMON, IF............THE DWR DOESN'T MESS THINGS UP, PLEASE DONT HOLD EMOTIONAL OPIONS AGAINST ME. ~G4

GFOUR I do not want this to be a bashing contest or name calling contest period. But you are shallow! I would quit hunting so my 2 little boy's could hunt. I love to hunt just about more than anything! My kids will always have the first oppertunity to shoot frist. This is not a race. It is about character, and morals and ethics! There is alot more to it than just killing a big bull! If it were up to me! I would get rid of the LE hunts and let 5 times the amount of children hunt! We have been there and done that. They are the future of hunting! Nothing personal but maby my kids mean more to me than yours do to you! Like someone said if me and my son were hunting and ole big boy came out. Knowing my son was ready. I would hand him the rifle everytime, Right Wrong. Whatever! That is how much I love my boy's! Like I said not trying to put you down! I just don't understand!! Good luck this year! I hope you and your boys get a big one! Bill

FEAR NOT FOR I AM WITH YOU! Walk soft and carry a 300 RUM,

I see his point, i think you guys misread him a little.
I think youth should have more opportunity for 2 reasons, First, they need it!! second, it gives us more chance to hunt as well as we will go with the little ones.
Now to clarify what G4 said (i hope!) I think he means that they should not be getting youth hunts in trophy areas..... at least thats what i think he meant. I agree that they do not need trophy areas because they will 1; get a false reality of what hunting is about, and 2; they should and would be THRILLED to kill a cow or raghorn on a statewide tag and learn what a trophy bull is later. G4, am i right?? man you guys need to lighten up a little, i cant believe i am the only one who might be seeing what he means??
For example, this year in NM they added a youth bull hunt in the Vial Vadal. I am not sure most kids would get the proper reality check of hunting in a spot like that if they had to hunt there for the first time. some of the older kids would see the difference but a first time hunter would get spoiled in a hurry.

You know who needs a reality check? Grown men that go hunting with a tape measure in their pack and then get pissed when they "only" kill a 330" bull.

RIMROCK338,

Thanks for the clarification. In reality, I don't really think that either of you are really against youth hunting. I probably blew it out of proportion.

I think our differences are minor.

The only bobcat hoping that all youth shoot a 350 bull!!!!!!

Sorry Schmalts, but I have to disagree with you on what G4 is trying to say. One, I'm not sure that he understands that the youth hunt is not for LE units, and two, he is obviously of the opinion that if he can't have a hunt that will guarantee him an easy to kill 400" bull then he doesn't want a hunt at all.
This is exactly the mentality that we are dealing with here in Utah. Everyone crying about not being able to draw a tag in one breath and with the next they are crying about the DWR increasing opportuntiy and trying to help as many people as possible get a tag because then they might actually have to hunt to find that 400" bull (Big bulls WILL still be there despite the opinions of some). People need to realize that you can't have your cake and eat it too.
We can either have a chance to HUNT and enjoy a great experience of trying to get the biggest bull on the mountain, be it 400", 350", 300" or whatever, or we can eternally watch "the other guy" that drew a tag SHOOT a 400" bull. While we look at our "UN" letters. Can't have it both ways.
Me, I'm all for the hunt. Let me go hunting, and if I HUNT my guts out and have a great experience and am lucky enough to get the biggest bull I can find, no matter the score, then I have killed one hell of a trophy that will be worth more to me than any 400" inch bull on the planet!!

Bessy,

Yeah, you are right. This cats mellowed out a bit. I will tell you one thing, this cats located some monster sheds. Probably not up to "Altamont Standards", but we are talking DK Peay Bragging size. The problem is, I need to take some pics' and you probably won't believe me anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I will make you a deal. Tell me what backround you would like? Trees, Grass, Cement, Sagebrush, Minivan...... Once I get clarification, I will E-Mail them to you. I am not sure this cat has the intellllijance to post them.

The only bobcat looking forward to proving that there are monster sheds in you know where!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last year my son was lucky enough to draw the youth elk hunt. We hunted hard, walked ten miles a day, and on the fifth day of the hunt HE shot a nice 6x5. For a father-son experience it doesn't get any better. We had a great time that we,ll always think back about. This was definitely not a trophy area but he worked hard and got a nice bull. I don,t see how this hunt could be anything but positive for our youth.
Schmalts, I also have to disagree with you. I think you need to re-read the ariginal post. If you make strong statements, you're gonna get strong reactions from people. I strongly believe This youth hunt is a good thing.

ELKSLAYER- YOU DONT KWOW ME... DONT YOU EVEN QUESTION MY LOVE FOR MY CHILDREN OR IT WILL GET UGLY AROUND HERE PAL. "nothing peronal" you just got real personal buddy. ~G4

> NO I HAVENT BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT

>> THIS WASNT ABOUT ME HATEING YOUTH IT WAS ABOUT ME HATEING NON-ESSENTAL HUNTS THAT LIMIT EVERYONES OPPERTUNITY, im done trying too explain my opinion....GOOD NIGHT NOW! ~G4

G4 like I said I did not want to piss you off but i don't understand the don't let the kids hunt mentality. Make them wait there turn! This is my question to you! If you had a 400" Bull on the wall would you still feel the same? Just so we don't misunderstand one another I have NEVER killed a big bull just a small 5x5. But I would still hand my boy the rifle on a big one!
Please do not think I was trying to attack your character! I was not! Like I said nothing personal. and if it seemed that way I am sorry! Bill

Its not dont let the youth hunt mentally, all im saying for the 5th or so time is whats wrong with takeing our kids out on general season hunts? why do we need a youth only hunt, sure on any gereral season hunt Id hand the rifle over in a heart beat, But...I turned 14 the first year of the spike only roll out so no I have never killed a bull over a two point, although I have shot many monsters through the lens of my Canon... Wish I had the money too go out and pay my way too a real wall hanger, not in a frame, but for now I dont have the extra cash so my only hope is too draw a state tag which has still alluded me... so I hope when my turn does come up I hope my boys understand why I dont hand over the .300 wrby, and I pull the trigger on my dream, I hope they realize that their dad waited a very long time for that..... I hope they love too hunt as much as me and share my love of the outdoors, Ill be hunting Elk this fall... general season spike bull and yes my boys will be with me. ~G4

Bess,

All right, sounds good. I will do the snap shots tomorrow and pay a few extra bucks for the one hour photo!!!! I may have to substitute cedars for pines however. But believe me, you will know they are original. I will try and add something unique!!!

My 12 year old daughter was fortunate enough to draw a limited entry yout tag in Mt a couple years ago. Even being blessed with an opportunity very few of us get, she was aware it was under circumstances she may not be able to enjoy again for and took advantage of it. We hunted our butts off and she passed on several bulls before she pulled the trigger on one that "she liked the way the rack was shaped" Did she have an advantage? YES. Did she appreciate it and acnowledge it? YES.
Her harvesting that animal meant 1000 times more to me than if I had pulled the trigger, and Im sure most parents would feel the same. I am assuming you do not have children?
I have a hard time comprehending how somone could be dissapointed or jeleous of a kid getting an advantage over us.
Darn kids, should start out with fast pitch, that T ball stuff aint teachn em nothin!
Get real!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GFOUR,
Cmon, are you trying to tell me the ONLY NON essential "hunts" the game Depts in several states create is the ones that give a drawing advantage to our youth and ALL of the others are absolutely, positively "ESSENTIAL"???? Guess Im missing what you classify as "essential"? I think it would be a great idea to create some "non essential" hunts that gave preference to our senior citizens too, (including your father) In fact I will call each member of the MT FWP Commision this week regarding such a drawing opportunity. (promise)
Hoping this is a fair analogy, I would much rather see Orphan Annie find a 100 dollar bill on the street than, lets say... Donnald Trump (or Ted Turner), I am hoping most others would too.

I'm all for getting the youth out and getting them involved. I know that for my kids I'd rather them get the "rush" of hunting than the rush that they say they get from drugs. If giving a youth a "youth only" hunt saves just one kid from the mess that a lot of them are getting into, I would say it was well worth it.
I'd much rather my kids be "hooked on hunting" as compared to the life than some of our kids have now. How many of them never get off of the couch and the computer and have never tromped the mountains and are missing the beauty of this great land we live in.
Some people wonder why we want our kids to hunt and why we want to add more youth to the already crappy odds. I say it is to save a kid from the "bad choices" in life and to keep "hunting" as we know it from dissappearing. Someday the 'youth' will be 'us' and if they are not involved and prepared now, all will be lost!!!

For Hell's sake let the kids hunt!
