Which areas in Oregon hold the highest consentrations of Elk, just curious if anyone knows? Thanks

I know the snake river and chesinimus areas, in the northeast corner are loaded with elk. Not sure if they have the most though.

I would have to say the west side of the Cascades has the highest consentration's of Elk...

OO,

Quite sending people to eastern oregon! Everyone knows that WESTERN oregon holds all the record bookers!!! I have only seen two cows in the snake in the past 15yrs....he he :)

A few years back a buddy of mine that moved from WA contacted ODFW to ask this very question and was given the answer "Ukiah". I would also agree that it is still proably Ukiah or Starkey. ODFW does post some data regarding elk per sqr mile. I have looked at it before, but am not going to spend the time to dig it up. If you go to their site in the wildlfe section you may be able to find the info.

With all this said that does not mean that the best hunting is in these Units.

Ukiah maybe but alot will be on private ground. Starkey has good population but also lots on private, plus a tough area to hunt. Plus, about 5 minutes into opening morning the elk dive into the wilderness area so unless you hike real good or have horses lotsa luck. I hunted Starkey last year on a hair tag and hunted hard everyday until Sunday morning before I tagged one.
Good luck if you go
Frank
