I am planning a trip to Colorado this September and am going to be taking my dad, he has been practicing for the last two years and I believe he is ready to take an elk with his bow. Im going to take him to Colorado, I have been checking the DFW page out lots of good info but am still having a hard time on fiquring out the best unit to go to. I am not looking for a monster, just a unit that has a dense population of Elk, if anyone could give some suggestions on where to start my research I would greatly appreciate it. Also I can give some info in return for Montana mule deer or Idaho whitetail areas. Thanks James

Head north to the Steamboat/Craig area. Not many big elk but there is and abundance of raghorns and small 5's. Best of luck.

LAST EDITED ON May-17-05 AT 00:14AM (MST)[p]You have already started well by spending time on CDOW's website looking at stats. Elk hunting with a bow is not easy. You might as well go to areas that have large elk poopulations and up your chances at taking one. White river herd, bears ears (jeff mentioned above) or parts of southern CO. Oh yes and have your dad take the 1st legal animal that gives him a shot! Hope it helps! Jeff

Thanks for the info guys, I really want to get into some elk and get them lured into his feet screaming there lungs out, so he can experience the feeling, that draws us all to these beautiful creatures

colorado has excellent numbers just about everywhere. I would take serious look at your physical conditioning. and then maybe hit the topos and find some land that are a little on the mole hill side instead of the those 14ers. Want more specific info, drop me an email. and I'll help as much as I can.

LAST EDITED ON May-18-05 AT 07:33AM (MST)[p]With the lack of rain the last few years you were able to find the bulls low.
This year could present a different story, with the wetter conditions they will likely go higher.
look for the food source, high open meadows, pooled water,
and abundants of dark tember.
if you have the time plan a road trip to scout.
the middle of august is a good bet.
climb as high as your capable of.
plant your fanny down and glass the draws and parks below.
look for cows and watch their movement.
come sept. they will be there, with the bulls right behind.
they are like catle, the will routinely travel the same path.
I'm hoppen for a muzzy. lic. this year.
Good luck.
I'm starting to get the shakes, i think I'm coming down with Elk Virous, god i love it, get it every year.
once you get it, there is no cure.

Thanks for the info guys, we plan on setting up base camp and spike camping out from there, just got to find the right unit to hunt in thanks

62 also has about 3 times more hunters than any other unit in the state by the stats. Not saying it is not a good unit and has great access. I have hunted there and you can get away from the crouds but there are plenty of hunters.

I was not knocking 62 as I hunted it many years ago and loved it. Just know it gets TONS of pressure.

Anybody got any pictures or stories from there lately?

There is one reputed cure for the virus- "cervid stokulum". My friend said to dunk your head in the toilet, flush, rinse and repeat. It still hasn't worked for me, but that shouldn't stop you from trying. I have had a really bad case this year. Ah....elk hunting.
