My Mrs. burned her 9 elk pts and did draw out!! Man she is hot this year, with Utah LE elk and Colo. elk!! She is in Italy on vacation and what a surprise this is going to be when she gets back!! haha

whew hew rifle tag fer me! Give me the skinny on the Trinidad area for elk. what is an average? I drew the first rifle tag for 85/850. any decent elk in this area?

Is unit 140 included in this tag ? I think it is ? Give Geremy Gallegos a try at [email protected] . He is the warden that works unit 140, specifically the James John SWA. You have to enter a drawing at the Pueblo CDOW office to get an access permit into James John during the rifle season but they take some gargantuan elk out of there. The Crazy French ranch borders it on the west and they have taken bulls close to 400 in the last few years. We were turkey hunting up there in April and there were elk everywhere, even up high in deep snow. I think they only allow 10 tags per season and close to 100 people put in for the 1st rifle. I would have a back up plan in case you don't get a permit if you are interested in that. Email Geremy, he can lead you into some public areas around La Veta Pass and Spanish Peaks that has good elk hunting. By the way. You have to pack into James John about 3 miles straight up the side of a 10,000 foot plateau. You follow a trail but needless to say it is a b*tch. Plus that band of Colorado/ Northern New Mexico is prone to freak snow storms as soon as early August. Good luck, great tag !
