Anyone know how long Idaho takes to complete their Deer and Elk draw? All I know is that they are much faster than Utah's 3 months!

The regs state that all successful applicants will be notified by mail by July 10th. The results will be on the internet also.

Usually around the 25th of the month following the deadline, but remember they gave everyone 5 extra days this year. Probably going to be closer to the 1st of July is my guess.

They gave 5 extra days last year too. Which is a crock of &*$%. Sorry about that... They are always early and I would bet that they will be up around the 25th again. Good luck to all in the drawings.

My personal opinion is that Idaho needs to incorperate the bonus point system. The Idaho state government is currently in the early stages of forcing the Fish and Game into making the bonus point system a reality. Which is long over due I think Idaho is one of two western states that does not use a bonus system. Some poor souls go for ever with out getting a controlled hunt.

Your odds have to increase it is mathematical impossible for you odds not to increase in a bonus system. Case in point I am awere of one individual who has been putting in for the same controlled hunt since 1986 with no luck. Now say that you have accumlated 20 points since 1986 hasen't your odds of a controlled hunt sky rocketed, versus a no point system. You could of drawn probably 2 or more times in that time period. I think that the Fish and Game is just to lazy to try something new and different, when money is short its easier just to set back on your laurels and do nothing. I am a government employee I now that for sure. I have heard opinions form The Fish and Game how a point system does not increase your odds I honestly cannot see how.

The question I have is this:

They can't even keep the computerized system up during high volume times (two years in a row). Do we really trust the system to keep accurate track of something else.

Just food for thought.

elkster123,

Bonus point systems are not all they a cracked up to be. Think about it. You say odds need to be increased for people who put in for a long time. However, for one's odds to increase, someone else's need to decrease! In bonus point systems, young/new hunters are discriminated against to the point that they will never get a permit. For example, here in Utah there is a bonus point system for moose and half of the permits are reserved for maximum point holders. My son (who was not alive when the system was started) will need to apply for 310 years to get maximum points for moose (I have the data if anyone wants to see it). Pretty sure he won't get there. Random draw for permits is the best!

My opinion is that there should be greater waiting periods for those who draw tags so that those who didn't draw have a better chance. For example, if I draw an elk tag that has odds of 1:30, there should be a waiting period of 30 years - that would be fair.

Do you or anybody else think that the Fish and Game Departments of any state have the ability to manipilate the out come of any so called controlled hunt drawing. Getech does Idaho's drawings I would assume that the results are seen first by the Fish and Game and then passed on to the "uses and mes" of the general public. Whats to stop the Fish and Game from removing or adding it's own list of names to that computer print out. Just for example say a individual has been convicted of wildlife crime 20 years ago you can rest assure the the state has a list of individuals that fit into that critera do you think it's possible that there names could be removed. Then on the other hand say a individual of importance, or a specialy intrest with the state wants to hunt and all the sudden gets a permit that year. Just food for though friends. Whats your opinion.

The lottery system that is currently in place is in my eyes the way to go. Look at the states with points. Once you draw don't expect another tag for 10 more years. I know that there are some Idaho residents that have put in for 20 years and never drawn but I also know some that draw what seems like every other year. Luck of the draw I guess! I myself have only drawn two tags and I put in of course every year. Despite this I know I have a chance at a good tag everytime I put in. I also feel the point system in the bordering states is a huge scource of revenue for the state of Idaho. The guys in those states with 1 or 2 bonus points know they are not going to draw a tag. So what do they do? They take there chances in Idaho and pay the application fee knowing they have as good as chance as the next guy. I say don't fix what is not broken.

I would expect the results to be posted sometime during the last week of June but possible sooner. I'll be checking the F&G website at least once a day until the results are posted.

Bonus points only increase the chances for those that can't ever seem to draw a tag. For everyone else bonus points make it more difficult to draw a tag. More people would apply for the limited number of tags if there was a bonus point system. I'm not sure if a bonus point system in Idaho would double the number of yearly applicants but it wouldn't surprise me. I know several half hearted hunters that apply for a tag or two every few years but if there was a bonus point system you could count on many of those individuals applying every year so they could get their points. It is simple math the more people that apply for a limited number tags the more difficult it becomes to draw those tags.
For guys that apply to multiple states bonus point systems might seem good on the surface because it makes it easier for them to plan out there fall before the draw results are posted. I haven't drawn a first choice tag in Idaho yet. I've only been appling for deer elk and antelope for eight years but almost all of the hunts I put in for have one in four to one in twelve odds. Sure I'm a little upset that I can't draw a tag. After not drawing any tags after 4 years of applying I wanted Idaho to have a bonus point system until I learned more about them. The reason Idaho doesn't have a bonus point system is because too many Idaho hunters don't want a bonus point sytem not because the F&G are trying to make extra money. IMO the F&G would make more money if Idaho had a bonus point system.

Second, points suck. My #1 gripe against points is that the rules change yearly, yet you buy points for the long haul. You do not know what you are buying, because the rules can change when enough have nots complain loudly enough. They also lock you into long term goals, yet your plans may change from year to year also. And they are unfair to newcomers. For Idaho, you also have to pick either deer, elk, and antelope, or one once in a lifetime species. You lose flexibility and will not be able to switch. Plus, the main thing points do is lessen the lucky guys chance of drawing multiple times before the unlucky guy does. For once in a lifetime hunts, completely unnecessary.

So what, you think the system should wait for your son to grow up before it starts? assuming he wants to even hunt when he grows up?Sorry but he can get in line with every one else. You
conviniantly left out some important info.He will still have a
chance at half the available tags every year....UTAH has the best draw options out there. It rewards the folks who have been putting in for years with nothing to show but frustration ,plus gives every one a chance every year.No system will please everyone but this is a good mix...
