You need to review the varying limited entry unit draw odd to determine what makes the most sense. If you don't know what units are best, I'd join Carter's Huntings Serices. They provides an excellent break down of draw odds together with an excellent review of the animal quality in the various units. Utah has changed their elk tag numbers and the way tags are distributed between the various weapons. The short answer is you must start accumulating points. I hit an archery tag after 9 years of applying. Going from a muzzleloader to archey doubled my odds of succes. As I recall, the archery draw odds were slightly less than 20:1, the MZ odds were in excess of 40:1 and the rifle odds are just flat ridiculous. Until this year, I had been putting in for the MZ tag--I specifically changed to archery to increase my draw odds because I believed with the changes coming in Utah, quality will go down. This decision also corresponded with a significant increase in my bowhunting the last two years. 20:1 draw odds, while steep, are astounding for the number of quality bulls in this units which I believe is in the top 3 or 4 for the state. Do some reseach and start accruing those points!
