Africa with Barnes X

I just got back from Africa. I used a 300 Weatherby with 180 grain Barnes X bullets. They performed perfect when I did my part. I had 1 shot kills on Kudu, Gemsbok, Zebra, and Impala. With shots from 150 yards to 370. But I must say that all of there vitals are farther forward than animals here. You have to shoot them threw the front shoulder. All of the bullets exited about 2 to 3 times the entrance hole size. With very quick kills.

Congrats on a successful hunt in Africa!

Great looking zebra.
Looks like that Kudu hit the ground hard with all the dirt on its horns! Thanks for sharing and for the update on the unleaded bullets.

Congrats on a great hunt. Wonderful trophies, and the memories last forever! Just 10 months and we will be back hunting leopards and plains game with our friends in Namibia.

Buffalo, those are some great pictures, I'm jealous! Congratulations on your success

very nice! Thanks for sharing.
Sorry for the ignorant question but what is the black rubber thing around your barrel?
Jeff

cohuntr6, I think that's a de-resonator (helps with accuracy). Great pics buffalo. Did you shoot the caracal and dik-dik? with the 300 mag too?

Awesome pics and hunting trip. Like the hat. Does the Limbsaver barrel rubber really work? Sounds like Barnes is the way to go for bullets.

I'm going there next summer and I was tossin up the idea of useing x-bullets as well. Looks like that's what I'm going with.

Great Pics and what a hunt thanks a bunch

It's not the quack but the flight of the wild duck that leads the flock to destiny!!
Quack Away!!

The black thing on the barrel is from Limbsaver (and they do work) I also put a Limbsaver kick pad on it and it works great. I have never had better results with any bullet,(and with this gun they are a little more accurate than Nosler Partitions) but like I said you are shooting threw the front leg or shoulder to hit the vitals on African game. Thanks for the compliments, I do appreciate them.

Looks like an awesome hunt with lots of great trophies. I recently shot some Barnes X-bullets into a fresh pine tree stump. They penetrated about 14 inches into the wood. When I cut into the back of the stump to retrieve them they had expanded to twice the original diameter, and when I took them home and weighed them, they had retained 100% of the original weight! They are awesome bullets! Now if I can just do a little more testing on game rather than stumps :)

Where are you going? I want to get a Sable and a Buffalo next time and want to go to a different place. Any good references would be appreciated. The place I went with was great, I just want to try someplace new.

I am headed over there with Spear Safaris.. They operate on over 35K acres that borders the Kruger National Park in South Africa. They also conduct hunts in Zimbabwe and in Tanzania (sounds like Zim would be your place for the buff and Sable hunt!)... They have fantastic areas and consistantly take great animals..
I am just doing another plains game hunt this go round in SA.. I am going to be taking Giraffe, Kudu, Zebra, Impala, Warthog, and maybe a bushbuck and duiker if I can find a good one.. I will be posting a report of the hunt when I get back!! We leave on the 28th and will be over there 12 days (7 hunting)..

Scotty... small world, also going to hunt with Spear Safaris in early July. Except I am going to Zim. for buf. Hunted the area next to Kruger (Thornybush) with Spear Safaris in 02. Great hunt. If they have one available and you have the trophy fee(pricy) another antelope type is the Nyala, beautiful. you will see lots of rhino also.

One of they guys that went with me took a Nyala. He is doing a full body mount (because the legs are so unique)

Let us know how the Buf hunt goes and if they have very good Sable.

Kilbuc, good times!! I can't wait.. this is going to be my third trip over to Africa, but the first trip with Ernest and the gang.. I have met Ernest on numerous occasions because my old employer is the US Rep for him. Seems like a stand up guy and I decided to give them a shot and see how it goes. Did you happen to meet my PH, Koos?? Heard good things about him form several of my friends that have shared camp with him. Its going to be my honeymoon trip.. hunting for a week and sight seeing for a week. We are leaving on the 28th.

Scotty....this is my 3rd trip also, 2nd with Spear. You got your priorities right, an african safari for your honeymoon. You future wife will love it. Best wishes.
