YES, MY WIFE AND I BOTH DREW UNIT 231 BULL TAGS IN NV.
I HUNTED 231 2 YEARS AGO WITH A FREIND THAT HAD A BOW TAG, WE WERE ONLY ON THE SPRING FOR 2 HOURS WHEN HE SCORED A 380 CLASS BULL.
OUR TAGS ARE RIFLE, SO THE HUNT WILL BE DIFFERENT. I WILL BE SCOUTING THE AREA AGAIN AS WELL AS TALKING TO FREINDS THAT KNOW THE AREA WELL. I WILL BE HUNTING THE WHOLE SEASON NOV 1-18
IF NEEDED. ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED, AS THIS IS OUR FIRST ELK HUNT OF OUR OWN. I HAVE HUNTED MULEYS FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS WITH MY WIFE AND KIDS, AND HAVE 2 YOUTH TAGS TO HELP THEM FILL.

If the youth tags are in 231 also you can scout while you have them out, the only thing I'm wondering about is the road conditions , there was alot of water this spring, good luck!...Greg

THANKS,
DEER YOUTH TAGS ARE FOR NOV. 202,205,206 NEAR HOME. (EXCELLENT AREA BY THE WAY!)WILL HUNT AFTER THE ELK HUNT WHEN STORMS BRING THE MIGRATION HERDS IN.
WILL SCOUT 231 IN JULY ON THEW WAY TO ST GEORGE, JUST TO GET TO KNOW THE AREA BETTER. THEN AGAIN IN OCT.

I am assuming that you live over by Reno or Yerrington on your way to St George you goin via Tonapah or Ely? Any if you hang a left at Pony Springs comming down from Ely that will get you over by where you were Hermatage, Cobb creek and then you can run back to Echo, I think Lincoln Co takes good care of that road, and if your goin to Utah on the way back you can get a map and turn off in Hamlin Valley and head up the same way, kinda hard to get lost, last time I was thru there from Ripgut on over to the Hermatage that was all burnt out from the Coyote fire, there is some big boys on that moutain...Greg

THANKS GREG,
YOU HIT YERINGTON ON THE NOSE.
THE INFO IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

NVHUNTERER- GOOD LUCKTO YOU AND YOUR WITH ALL THE TAGS- SHOULD BE A WELL FED FAMILY THIS YEAR. I AM ANOTHER ONE OF THE 231 TAGHOLDERS. HAVE ABOUT THE SAME PLAN YOU DO RE SCOUTING. WILL KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOU. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY TO MY POST.

GOOD LUCK,

MARK

I was lucky to draw a deer tag in 231. How is the deer hunting in that unit? Any information would be great. Thankyou

If you really want a big buck/bull and need a great guide whom knows this area very well, contact Mark Lane at White River Guide Service. He has killed several BIG animals there.

I would also call Greg Krogh with Mogollon Rim Outfitters, he is a great guy and knows NV well

After 13 years of applying I was drawn.
I've gotten a slew of Guide pamphlets in the mail already but don't want to spend 3-5K on them.
I'm planning a 5 day scouting trip in August to check some areas out. How far south in the units do the elk extend?
What kind of pressure will we see with with 70+ hunters?
Any info would be appreciated.

neb,
I would scout the whiterock mts., I don't know if the elk have a different summer range but they are there during the hunt season.
There are several different areas to scout around there.
I will be there some time in the middle of july to scout more.
If you check the harvest report I believe all the elk were harvested out of 231, I don't know if that means there aren't any in 241 or 242 ????
good luck!

Neb,
I had this tag last year, I know a little about the area.
I live in Vegas and can help you with what I know.
I killed a 320 class bull the first day, but I know you can do a lot better than that, let me know if I can help you out, would be glad too.
Dave

NVHUNTERER,
Thanks. I appreciate any input. I just got the topo and BLM maps for the area and can start some telephone work before the scouting trips.
The stats did not show any harvested out of 241 or 242 but it would be reasonable to think there would be some there with the Spring conditions this year. We had a high moisture year several years ago and a bull showed up down by Gila Bend in the fall.
G+F sedated him, cut his horns off and hauled him back to the higher country.
muleycrazy,
Thanks. I'd love to pick your brain on the unit.

I've scheduled out the entire hunt and 4 days before the opening.
We'll also be up on a scouting trip Aug. 11-15.
We hunted the adjacent unit for deer 3-4 years ago and saw an impressive number of elk with a few toads. I never thought I'd get the 231 tag before the 221 hunt.
I'm coming out of Bullhead City/Laughlin and will be in Vegas for my Daughters dance convention the last few days of July.neb

Muleycrazy- I too have the tag and am doing this hunt solo. Never been up there yet, but will be scouting last of Sept and Mid Oct. Then hunt two weeks.

Would like to hear more of what you experienced last year.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Neb and Hunterer- Good luck in your hunts. As time gets closer I'll let you know the general area I'll be in, Maybe I'll see you out there.

Mark

WOW!
Only got to scout one day so far. The racks look like they are going to be bigger. I saw some nice ones. (good feed maybe?).
Sorry no pics. Camera was full of kid pics. Maybe next trip.
NVHUNTERER

Least you got out. I am no pro- but would think there's up to a month or so left in their growth?????

Glad you saw game.

Mark

We just got back from our trip yesterday. Spent 5 days learning roads, areas etc. and had a great time.
The area was hit daily with huge monsoon storms with isolated roads sustaining much damage.
The road by ripgut was completely closed 2 days ago with a washed out hole/lake 30 feet across and several feet deep obstructing the road. It looked like they had worked on it then the repair was washed out.
We talked to a few archery hunters (deer and cow elk) but only saw a few camps. The area is huge and it looks like it will be impossible to cover all of it. I got the feeling this unit will absorb the 72 bull hunters easily.
We also saw the BLM people out diligently placing Wilderness signs up. Apparently there are 2 new Wilderness areas in the White Rocks and Wilson range. It's a good chance an elk will have to come out on a backpack in some areas.
The road from Caliente (H-93) going west was closed from a washout and we had to backtrack to St. George via H-25 to get to Las Vegas and turned a 5 hour trip into a 7 hour trip.
I might try to get up for a weekend during the bugling time to see if we can locate some areas in the Southern part of the unit or in 241-2, a lot of that country looks a lot like the PJ country in 10 (az) which holds a lot of elk.
How hasve the scouting trips gone for everyone else?
neb

Well if you decide not to have a guide go with you, I will be up in 22 every weekend during your hunt. If you need some help calling, I'll be up there videoing the bulls in 22 as well as calling them. Just look for a red ranger. Hard to miss.

Cass,
Do you mean unit 242? I will not be using a guide.
My hunt is the November rifle hunt.
I drive a Green Toyota Tundra 4-door.
neb

The input here is great, THANKS! It will help all involved. I agree with Neb, 72 shouln't be a problem.
I will try to get down in Oct for another scout, I'll post anything new.
I'll be driving a brown chev excab w/silver toolbox, if anyone needs help just ask, will be hunting Nov 2-13 or 18 if needed.
I will not be using a guide. Depending on road cond. will set 5th wheel at eagle valley resivoir or farther in north if roads are good.
Thanks

Area 221 - 223
Because they still call in Nov. Most of my time will be spent up there in mid - late october.

-Cass

Cass,
By "calling" do you mean they are still bugling or just responding to calls (or both)?
I have not hunted in early November hunts before but a lot in late Nov. and early December hunts and bugling activity was minimal (AZ hunts).
I've hunted early to mid October hunts (AZ., UT., Colorado) and they still carry on a lot.
Do you get much response to cow calling in early November?
I have become somewhat paranoid of calling too much or at all the last few years as the responses from the bigger bulls is not consistent (sometimes they just run away).
Have you been in 231 much?
Thanks,
neb

You need to learn to listen to the elk. Their bugles will tell you if you are bugling too much or not enough. I've had them call back to me as early as June, and as late as december. The best cow call that I have found to get the best attention is one called the "Sleezy Cow" It is awesome for bulls in Nevada. At least from my experience. In early Nov. Most of the calls that I get are loner bulls, Bulls that have rutted hard and been cast out by the larger bulls. I've noticed that a lot of times during this time the herds will stay with the medium bulls, your 340-360 bulls and your Big bulls, your 390+ will return to their high country until the snow gets up to their bellies.

-Cass

Do the ranges in 231 get that kind of snow? White Rocks and Wilson ranges. They run 7000-8000 feet. How early do these ranges get snow?
neb

DEPENDS ON WEATHER, SOMETIMES EARLY OCT WILL SEE A FEW INCHES, LATE OCT-NOV MAY SEE FOOT OR MORE IN HIGHER ELEVS, LOOK FOR STORMS CALLED TONAPAH LOW OR PINEAPPLE EXPRESS, THEY MAY DUMP MORE SNOW UP HIGH BUT RAIN BELOW 6000FT.
OR MAY NOT SEE ANYTHING BUT RAIN TILL DEC.

I THINK THAT TIME OF YEAR JUST LOOK OUTSIDE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE WEATHER JUST WAIT 10MINUTES IT WILL CHANGE.
GOOD LUCK
NVHUNTERER
CAN'T WAIT TILL NOV-1ST

NOW YOU KNOW THAT'SLEEZY COW CALL' MUST BE MANUFACTURED IN NEVADA!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING I MIGHT NEED A NEW CALL!!!

I've actually never seen it in Vegas, I had to buy my first one in Ely and their sporting goods store is the only one i've found that carries it. Then again i've never looked since I got mine...

-Cass
