My wife & I drew a either sex Elk tag for Big Gulch. Does anyone know anything about this Ranching for Wildlife Ranch? Any help would be appreciated.

Its been a while since I checked into that ranch, (since CDOW said no to non-res. applying for the permits) but it seems that there should be lots of elk, but not big bulls, my research showed that a few years ago they got a lot of 5 point bulls with a few small 6 point bulls once in a while, that goes for almost all the RFW ranches near Craig. If I had your tags I would call the "ranch / (hunting program) manager" on the phone and have a conversation, also try to track down someone who hunted it last year if possible, somebody has those names, the ranch or CDOW.

What season is your tag for?. It also depends on which part of the ranch you will be hunting. If it's the portion norht of Craig then the later the better. If it's the portion of the ranch east of Craig you should see elk during any of the earlier seasons. I've never hunted this ranch but have hunted a different RFW north of Big Gulch.

I don't think you'll kill any monsters but you should have no trouble filling the tag.

Our tags are good for 10/15-10/19 & the first few days in Dec. The way I understand it, we can hunt all 120,000 Acres. We have to pick what area the day before we hunt an area and then we can change the next day as long as we check in with the office. I know the area is not known for very big bulls. I would be happy with a larger 5 point or a small 6. This will be my wifes first elk hunt with me in the Mountains and she'd be happy with a small 4 pointer. I have hunted Quaker Mtn, Bears Ears, Sawtooth Mtn, California Park, Slide Mtn and Black Mountain a few times and know that area pretty good but have never stepped foot on Big Gulch before.
