I drew the late archery any elk hunt in unit 15 in New Mexico. I'm not looking for any secret spots, I'm just getting antsy, with a long way to go. Anybody that has hunted this unit have any opinions on it. This will be my first time in this unit.

It is a good unit. The number of elk have decreased in my opinion over the last few years. Not to be discouraged though. The numbers used to be more then excellent and now are just great. The second archery hunt is a blast, usually right in the rut, although the full moon usually hitting about that time as well. As far as an area, pretty much pick a spot and you could find elk. Unit 15 is huge! Right on the border of AZ can be good, around Quemado lake is OK, Mangus mountain area is the highest elevations in the unit. Like I said, pick a spot and try it. If you get a chance to scout it out do so. I see alot of velvet bulls in late July/early August and they usually will stay in the area through Sept. The unit is so big that people have a tendency to float around it and hunt one day here and another day 30 miles away. My recomendation is to find a couple of areas that hold some elk and hunt each of them hard for a couple of days and alternate each spot. There are alot of roads so there are few remote areas. Hope this helps.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, weapon in one hand, calls in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

Thanks, like I said I'm itching for mid september to get here. Just getting a feel for what to expect when we start looking. Kinda planning on concentrating on areas that we find elk.

Sounds like your from Silver City, somehow me and a buddy of mine drew 23 burro mtn coues, late hunt, along with this elk hunt. Whats your opinion on the coues hunt.

We drew muzzleloader mule deer for unit 15. Very new to the area, any deer here? Any area to keep an eye on?
