Can any of you MM buffs give me some helpful hints about archery elk hunting locations in Idaho units 66A and 76 (Diamond Creek). This is southeast Idaho. I've been forthcoming (probably too much so) to others on this site when they need Oregon info., and I'm just hoping for a little reciprocity. Thank you!

Try Meade Basin around Beaver Dam Creek in unit 76 there are some big ones in there. Good luck!

Its been awhile since I hunted 66A but I can tell you that its loaded with archery hunters, both res. and nonres., alot of elk too. The farther back in you are the better.

Sarcasim,

Are you planning on walking in or do you have horses? I can probably help. The earler posts are correct lots of archery hunters but a lot of elk as well.

Thank you for the quick replies. I have horses, but they'll stay home for another year or two. Still too young. I'll be hoofing it, so to speak, on my own two feet. PM's or emails are great, too. My email is kerryshepherd then the @ sign at mhgm.com. Thanks again.

You will have a harder time finding a campsite than you will finding elk in that unit.

You won't lack for company! Nor will there be a lack of non-resident hunters.

Watch out for the private stuff, the locals get a little testy in that country about trespassing.

In all seriousness, the country has a tremendous amount of elk and there are some good ones there. Enjoy it this year as the Idaho F&G has added a bunch of extra bull rifle tags and cow rifle tags. I think they are trying to thin the herd a little bit, it may impact 2006.

Also, you aren't going to get much rutting action early. The later in Sept. the better. I don' think there is a "bad" part of the unit, elk are all over.

Good luck.
