Monroe Mountain Scouting?

Has anyone been scouting Monrore? How does the antler growth look? With all the moisture, I have high hopes for an exceptional year. I'm heading down this weekend to start to look for some elk honey holes! Achery season is no longer months away!

I saw a few dang good bulls last month! I'd too like to see how they are progressing. I might be up there this weekend too, haven't decided yet.

Do you have a Elk tag ?
They are tame this time of year, yet seem to move a lot before any hunts start. The horn growth this year is very good.

Yep, drew an archery tag after too many years of applying. I'm heading down (from Ogden)this afternoon to scout for the weekend. Firgured it was time to get to know other parts of the unit. Any areas you would suggest?

I'll be up there during your archery elk hunt. If you are having trouble finding them, stop by my camp and i'll help you out with some elk. Familys been hunting that mountain for over 20 years, know it, from the radio tower to box creek like the back of my hand.

I've been on the mountain four of the last five weekends. I haven't seen antler growth like this for quite some time on the mountain. Saw 78 different bulls in 3 hours one night in June. It's definitely a year to be patient, my 72yr old father has an early rifle tag, should be fun.

Only had time for a quick trip to get the lay of the land in a part of the unit I'd never seen before. In a 2 hour period (late Friday/early Saturday), I saw 21 bulls 12 of which would score 300+ with still some time to grow. One, was the largest bull I've ever seen alive. 20"-24" fronts, 24" thirds, 30" fourth and huge backs. Perhaps most startling was his mass. Never seen anything like it. He was with a nice 320 kind of bull who he absolutely drarfed. I haven't seen many elk (dead or in print)with a bigger frame, not to mention the tine length. If he get's killed, we'll all read about it in Trophy hunter or Eastmans. Nest scouting trip, I'll bring the digital camera to share some pics. Rumors about good antler growth this season appear to spot on.

I hope you get a shot at that one! With those measurements he will for sure be a World Record. Maybe if I am lucky, he will head South and spend his time on the Dutton for the archery hunt.
Looking forward to seeing some pictures.

heh, He's still alive. If you want to find him on your hunt, talk to the californians, they see him almost every year opening weekend of the archery deer hunt. He tends to go his own path after they have spooked him, but there is one place he has been heading for the past 4 years, away from roads, quads, people in general. If you are interested in taking him on the hunt, bring a horse. You will need it to get him outa there... If your horse makes it.

Boy, where has that bad boy been? I'm up there a lot and never seen one with that size..
Given that he has 20" firsts, 24" seconds, 24" thirds, 30" fourths, and give 15" fifths, and a 52 inch main beam, (being conservative for those kinds of numbers), 50" mass (conservative again) and a 50" spread credit, we're talking a 430 bull. Get some pics... Or e-mail me where he hangs and I'll go get some and post them. That is awesome!!!!

He's pretty easy to spot this time of year, I know where he has been opening weekend of the Deer hunt in past years, I'll be waiting there the day before to see if I can get a picture of him.

-Cass

I had a archery tag last year and i hunted it almost the whole hunt and if you want to get a good bull im talkin 350 class you need to spend alot of time scouting and not just looking from your truck or atv you need to get as far away from roads and people as possible. it can be a very rewarding hunt

I have a pretty good idea of which bull these guys are talking about, he's definately a toad, but 430"???? However, I do think he might be the first 400" bull to come off that mountain. Like Cass said, bring your horse!

I have not spent much time to the mountian this year and probably wont get up there until mid Sept. But my dad called me the other day at 11:00 @ night to tell me about three bulls that he saw running together. If my memory servers me right there was an 8X10, 7X9, and a verry semetrical 7X7. Dad says that the 8X10 has more mass and tine length to it then any other bull he has ever seen. Looks like everyone that was lucky enough to get a tag this year should be in for a hunt of a live time.

Good luck

That 7x7 I think you are referring to, becomes a horn-dog before the rut, chasing shiela's all over hell. Last year I spoke with 2 different hunters that had him patterned, only to loose sight of him before the hunt started.
Remember that some of the awesome horn size you are seeing now is because of the velvet they are wearing, it is still a remarkable year, however I think them California buddies of Cass's occasionally forget to factor that in.

All the elk you see durring the summer will be in a different spot when the rutt starts! We scouted all summer and it was alot of fun .. thought we had them figured out but found when they started the pre-rutt they were in diferent places.. so the best thing to do if your archery hunting is take as much time of the hunt off from work... You'll do good!

Elk_horn is right. You can locate every bull on the mountain, but come the middle of August, they will be nowhere near the same spots, but they are not too hard to find. The bigger ones seem to find a quiet place to do their rutting, but if you can spend the time, and put on miles on your boot leather, you'll find them. I just want to see some photos of those big boys!!

Rick, here's one that Jeff took & e-mailed to me.

Every one that says that the elk move out of the areas during the season is not completely true last year whe i hunted the unit during the archery season i seen the elk in the same areas i had been scouting. There were very few areas that i scouted that the elk moved out.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-19-05 AT 10:51PM (MST)[p]I didn't mean to say that the elk move out of the area, but from our experiences, different bulls seem to move into the areas than the ones that were there when we were scouting. A few years ago when we were helping a friend, we did see some of the same bulls during the hunt that we had seen while scouting, but on my hunt we never seen any of the larger bulls we were watching. I think a lot depends on the feed, pressure, and where the cows are when the rut starts to come on.
One thing you can say about elk hunting, if you think you have it all figured out, you're going to be wrong!!! Maybe not always, but eventually it will catch up to you..
Hey B_F_E, that is a weird looking bull. Would be fun to stick one like that.. Of course it is fun to stick any mature bull, and even some smaller ones too......
Was that above your place??? Seen a couple good ones up there on Friday evening.
Have anyone seen the fire north of Marysvale Peak lately? It is really starting to rip...Can see flames from town tonight...
And they are not even thinking about fighting it yet?????
It could get ugly if the wind comes up!!

Rick, that's another one of those bulls that drink from the nuclear power-plant water, when its not drinking there it hangs out by Brindley dairy, I've got a short video I tryed posting but it was to much to upload.

As far as the fire goes, we are tearing down our cabin to start over, so if it burns down, it will save us some demolition.
very smokey over here in grass valley.

Hey B_F_E, looks like you may get a little hot over your way. You may get free demolition after all.... The fire has went crazy and is burning over near the new cabins at Manning. The radio says 28 acres, 28 acres my butt!!!
You guys scouting near the Manning area, Monroe Meadows, and anywhere on that end of the mountain will probably not be able to get up there for a week or two. I hear they have closed down all the access roads to get up there now. Talked to a friend who has a cabin and went up and he said it is UGLY!....

Can someone give me an update of the fire situation? Is it growing? If it continues to grow, would look for the displaced elk to go north or south?

It rained yesterday and slowed it down some. It raining again in the valley now and looks like it heading that way. If I was to guess which way the elk in that area went I would say south and east.

Heres the latest report.

NEW Marysvale Peak (Fish Lake National Forest): 600 acres. This lightning-caused Wildland Fire Use (WFU) incident is being managed to accomplish resource objectives. The fire is 14 miles southeast of Richfield. A major communications site, cabins, Bonneville Cutthroat Trout habitat and other structures are threatened. An evacuation order is in place for local residents. Low relative humidity and wind caused extreme fire behavior with long range spotting.

Well, I'll be up there this weekend, If ya see me rollin around the hills look for me, I'll have the orange out on my pack.

Talked with forest service they said to stay away ... so we are going out to the Book Cliffs instead. Too much smoke and fire fighters for this kid! The ranger said they were turning people back and had the road closed to Manning Meadows

Looks like I need to wait a week to resume scouting--I had planned on heading to the Manning Meadows area. Thanks for all the updates.

Talked to a friend whose family has cabins in the area and the fire came close to new cabins on north east end of Manning.
Said the fire came down to the lake in places. They had that area under control but were worrying about the fires down in the canyon below their cabins. Firefighters were supposed to head down there this morning to contain fires. HOpe they are successful. They kind of let this one get a little out of hand before they done anything about it. They said they were trying to burn out some dead timber...they did that and then some...
Guess it really done some major burning north of Marysvale Peak..
Not many elk are down in that country this time of year, but I'm sure the smoke and extra activity have pushed what elk are close, like around Monroe Meadows, and Manning south and east..
I doubt they'll go too far...

Does anyone have any updated news on the fire situation? The forest service website is worthless. Fire conditions permitting, I'm hoping to get back down there this weekend. Thanks in advance.

We were there last weekend and drove down to Manning Res. The fire burned to the road in a couple of places. They weren't restricting travel and many of the fire fighters were leaving. They seemed to have it under control. We actually let some of the fire fighters look through our binos as we watched a herd of bulls. They seemed to think that they had the fire under control. I don't know the status from this week though.

My friend also has an archery elk tag. Should be a lot of fun. Good luck to you.

Rick

I was down there this weekend spent alot of time towards manning and box creek, never even smelled the fire did see where it had burned a bit but seemed to be under control.

Back from another quick scouting trip. Saw lots of deer but only a few elk--one was shooter though. I'd expect to see the bulls start rubbing the next 7-14 days. Didn't see a single elk in the areas I saw 20+ bulls 3 weeks ago. Don't know if they have moved or it's just my bad timing.

Has any-one seen any bulls around the fields south of town, How is the Beaver doing this year. How's the deer you all are seeing.

elkaddiction,

Did you have your son with you and a couple other guys? If so, we were the guys looking at that group of bulls on the road to Manning Meadows. That big bull we were filming was the only really big bull we saw this weekend as well. There were several other very good bulls in that group. Good luck with your tag.

Yes, that was me and my boy. Those ended being the only bulls we saw--which was quite a surprize. Last trip down, I saw dozens of bulls though they were farther north. At least it was a pleasant weekend for camping. We're heading down again this weekend to check out some country farther south. I expect next weekend to start to see some rubbed antlers. Its getting close!

Elkaddiction,

My dad and uncle have cabins on the Monroe Mountain and spend a lot of time watching the animals as they grow throughout the year. They seem to have a harder time finding the bulls come the first part of Aug. We think that they head back into some of that think timmber they have up there to get a way from the flies while they are rubbing the velvet off there antlers. It does not supprise me that you are having a dificult time finding the bulls right now. If you give it two or three weeks you'll be able to find the bulls all over the mountain again.

Word of addvice, if you have an archery tag for the Monroe don't take all your time off work the first couple of weeks. Save your time off for the tail end of the hunt. The elk are alot more active toward the end of the archery hunt.

Good luck

We were with another group and on Friday night we split up. We didn't see anything and they saw a group of 14 bulls together and 11 bulls together. We had been in both spots 30-45 minutes earlier. Sometimes it is the right place at the right time.

Good Luck

Congrats elkaddiction. I also drew archery tag. I have seen some decent bulls. I have been hunting box cr. area for 18 years.

I was on the north end (Cove) this past weekend. Saw some decent bulls. Got some footage of a couple dandys. There was a lot of people trying to see the big 7x7. So I split from there and headed to another spot. Found 35 bulls. It was awesome. Wish I had a tag!

Well, since alot of people have seen this bull..how about somone posts up some pics of him?

Did anyone get on the Mountain this weekend? Have they started rubbing yet? It's just about to happen!

Was there Thur/Fri and didn't see any rubbed yet. Got into a good hail storm while out on the ATV's.

You gotta love summer time in the Rocky Mountains. They'll start rubbing in the next 7 days--I'd bet money on it!
