Wyoming Unit 16 - ELK

I am seeking information of Wyoming Unit 16 for Elk. I have drawn an elk tag for rifle season and was hoping to get a better understanding for the lay of the land, hunting pressures, external influences (ATV's), scouting or other tips you may offer insight into. Additionally, I beleive, for a nominal fee, I may purchase an archery tag to hunt September if I desire. I only have a couple weeks I can hunt there and wanted to maximize my time. Since September offers the rut, I wonder if I should spend one week archery and the last week with the rifle(assuming an unsuccessful archery hunt). Thoughts....

Where is that area? The game and fish site is down at the moment. Check on the dates for the archery and rifle seasons. In most areas (there are some exceptions) you can archery hunt deer and elk during the month of September. Then it opens for the rifle hunt for deer, but the rifle elk hunt will not open until the rifle deer hunt closes (again some exceptions). I.e. there is a gap between archery elk and rifle elk hunts. Check into it.

Sakman,

I've never hunted the area personally, but live in Rawlins which is fairly close to there. I know of some people who hunt that area and the one just to the west. I am familiar with the area however. I would first try scouting the area in and around Seminoe and Pathfinder Reservoir's. I know a guy that shot a nice 6x6 last year between these two reservoirs. Also try the mountains just east of there. Not sure on access, but I believe there is a fair amount of BLM land in the area. Also, I don't know if that area reaches all the way over to the west side of the LAramie Range, but I know from experience there is some great elk hunting in that area, however access can be tricky. I've also heard there is a desert herd of elk that frequent the Shirley basin area. Hope that helps.
