Elk Movement...High or Low?

Howdy all,

I have a buddy who has an AZ 7w bull tag and I've been out scouting since hearing the news and have found a few real decent elk herds and bulls but being so early in the season and with an archery hunt in Sept and a rife cow hunt in Oct I'm guessing a lot of the elk are going to be pushed out of that area. What I'm wondering is where the elk are likely to go. Are the bulls more likely to climb up into the high mountain ranges and stick in the pines or do you think they will head out into the thick pinyon/cedar flats? This is my first time hunting 7w so I don't know the elk movement patterns so I figured if I got some "veteran" advice I might be able to make an educated guess where they will go.

Thank you!

They'll go where the pressure isn't. Look for rough terrian. I'd talk to the warden in the area, they are often a good source of info. If there is much pressure, and there is private land in the area, I'd bet on them heading that direction. ...and there are always the ones that hole up where they are at (amazing how an animal that large can disappear!) and pretty much go nocturnal. Coolest areas you can find, north slopes, timber, seeps...

That is a great unit. Archery hunted there years ago before the broke up unit 7. Biggest bulls I have ever seen in a lifetime of elk hunting.

Great, that means they will be in those thick juniper flats x(

Thanks for the tips!
