Congrats to your son on drawing one of the primo tags in the state. I don't really know if there's a bad way to hunt this unit. I have never taken a trip there (just for camping, turkey hunting, whatever) and not seen elk. There are plenty of them all over the unit.
It's not a very big unit, if you get a chance to scout you can pretty much cover most of it in 2-3 days. It's relatively easy walking and hiking, and there are plenty of roads and trails to get around. No real steep and rocky climbing, so your son will also have an easy time.
Get some good forest maps that show you where the tanks are and check them out. Depending on the weather/rain, some may be dry and that could narrow things down a bit. But there are quite a few of them in this unit.
I have always seen elk around the tanks in the southern and southeastern part of the unit. Many of them will already have permanent blinds and tree stands nearby if you want to hunt that way. Make sure to get some good land status maps though because there are a few chunks of private land here and there.
The elk may still be in the last part of the rut too, so locating a heard might not be too difficult if you like to spot and stalk.
