My cousin drew an any elk leftover tag in area 8 which is also good for cow only in area 9. I know there is alot of private land in area 8, but there is some BLM and State land around Jelm Mountain near Woods Landing. I have been to the area, but never hunted it. We will be hunting October 1st as I will be hunting deer then and he elk. Anyone have any info on area 8 near Jelm Mountain. Wanted to start in that area because it is any elk and I would like to put him on a bull. If we can't find land or any good public areas, we will be hunting area 9 for cow which I am more familiar with. I live near the area and will be heading up nex weekend to scout around jelm Mountain, Any help, advice or opinions on that area would be appreciated.

Thanks

Its been several years since I hunted that area and then it was area 9 only that I hunted. The place was fairly crawling with elk, but there was an awful lot of hunter pressure. I don't know quite where it falls on the map, but look at the lake Owen area. In 9, sheep mountain usually has a herd, but it is steep (as in Western Wyoming ranges sort of steep), and you might want to consider how you are going to get your animal off if you go that route. If your strong, have stamina, and have good knees, a couple of you could pack one off--otherwise think horses. The general areas around Rob Roy, and around the Savage Run Wilderness area, pretty much all of that area had elk about when I was down there. Try to use the other hunters to your advantage, they will be pushing the animals around alot. Look for likely travel paths, saddles, fingers of timber between clear cuts, etc... During the day, think thick, cool, north slopes: the kind of stuff most hunters won't want to hunt. I'm a believer in mid day hunting. Its a beautiful area, but the amount of orange I saw the first year I hunted up there is what inspired me to take up bowhunting. Enjoy the hunt, it is big, beautiful country.

Thanks mmwb. I grew up hunting the area around the Rob Roy and Lake Owen and up towards Libby Flats area and am pretty confident I can locate a cow for my cousin in that area. I am hoping on starting out in area 8(which is east of Highway 10 at the turn off at Woods LAnding)becuase it is any elk for him. I have maps that show a good chunk of BLM around Jelm Mountain and that will be my starting point. If I can't locate any elk scouting that area, we will move over to area 9, although it is cow only.
