I have a Colorado elk tag in unit 61 for Oct 22 -30. What can I expect to see both in quality and quantity. Any general info about the unit would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any responses.

61 is a good unit but dont expect it to be an easy kill. A lot of hunters draw the tag and think that you will see big bulls all over the place and you get to pick the one you want to shoot. It is far from that. The bulls will be a little a hard to find. You can expect to see 300 ish bulls with some hard hunting. There are 350 range bulls around but you will need to get lucky or have found one preseason. There are not that many around but they are there.

I will be hunting there with a friend for the second year in a row. He drew with points last year and this year he drew a voucher that he will use. We chased a 360 last year that he didnt get. We have found a 340 this year which is the biggest we have found so far this summer.

Western,
Is there numerous places to camp? We may be getting there in the dark the day before the opener. How is the terrain and vegitation? I do not want any secrets about your hunting area just looking for a general overview on the country.
thanks

There are plenty of places to camp along divide and uranium rds. There are also a few dedicated campgrounds.

The terrain is typical elk country with aspen pine sage on the flat tops near divide road and oakbrush along the plateau sides dropping to the cedars.

The country is pretty much a big plateau with the best hunting on the sides as they drop to lower country.

Western,

Thanks for the reply and the info. Goodluck on that trophy that you have been seeing.

thanks

Bob,

I'm spending the weekend up there, my Wife is off on a girls only campout so i get to go out on my own. Going to look for a complete bull elk skeleton a non hunting friend told me about in a remote canyon. If I see your bull I'll let you know.

expect to see snow and be prepared for the worst. i've hunted up in 61 and 62 all my life if you get down into a canyon or finger that is steep. make sure you can get out of it with snow on the ground before you think about droping down into it. besides uranium road gets alot of traffic so if you want toget a good hunt dont go past divide forks camp grounds.
