I was fortunate enough to draw a tag for 29 and would like any help I could get on that unit. I will not be able to scout the unit at all!!! I'm looking to hunt out of a backpack in the more rugged and steep areas. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!!And come on Oct 1st.

No need to scout, just go have a sub par hunt and call it a successful hunt cause you got out of the city.Good luck

Hayden creek watershed. Large and has good numbers of elk.

If you can't get there, at least get a forest service travel map, a BLM map and a few topo's of the the Hayden creek area.

When the numbers of tags were down, there were lots more true trophy class bulls in the unit. With all the continuous archery pressure and 200 rifle tags, you have to hunt harder than before. Depends what size bull will satisfy you, and how lucky you get. How much time will you have? There are plenty of "easy" ones to be had without killing yourself, but they will be 260-280 class. My friends who live in Salmon hold out for 300-330 bulls and are successful, but you may have to pass a lot. The last time they drew, they passed up 16 different 5 and 6 pt. bulls, and harvested 4 good ones. Hayden, McDivett, Haynes, K-Mountain are all good areas, but don't overlook areas like Timber and Big 8 Mile.

You must have me confused with another city boy( Not that I have anything against the city boys).I,m trying to avoid having a sub par hunt!! That's why I'm on here getting as much info as possible, Otherwise I would drive the roads on my brand new quad and stay in my 40 ft trailer and so on!!! Instead, I get as much info as possible from game wardens, biologist, topo maps, and who ever is willing to trade info and hunt from daylight til well after sundown everyday until myself and my hunting partner fill our tags with a good bull.Enough said!! I,m on here for one reason--to increase my odds of taking a good bull. Thanks for the help.
