GMU 19 in Colorado

I'm new to big game hunting, but I'm going to give it a try this year. I'm wondering if anyone has any info that might be helpful for GMU 19 for elk/deer hunting? I know that for deer you can hunt GMU 191 too, are there any opinions on this unit at all? I'm going to be hunting 3rd season (Nov. 5-11). Thanks for any help at all!

I was in 19 yesterday chasing elk with my bow.
Unit 19 is not the best for deer as it is heavily timbered from the foothills of Fort Collins to Cameron Pass. 191 is more "open" compared to 19 so it is better deer country. Try Hewlett gulch (just past poudre park) in Poudre canyon for deer. It is pretty consistant. Do you have buck/doe cow/bull tags? Are you looking to fill the freezer, put something on the wall or just get out?
Unit 19 has 4 major access points and 2 really seem to concentrate hunters. They are the Buckhorn rd. (co. rd. 44H), stove prairie/old flowers rd., pingree park rd., and Long draw rd. Pingree and long draw are the most heavily hunted.
I have lived in Fort COllins for 6 years and have hunted these units every year in some form or another. If you look at harvest stats 191 always is more successful than 19. Check out CDOW's website... www.wildlife.state.co.us
go to big game--> stats.
Hope it helps, dont hesitate with any other questions.

Thanks Jeff. I actually have a cow and bull tag and a buck and doe tag for the same season. I'm not exactly looking to put something up on the wall, however if the chance arises!! ha. I am really just looking to fill the freezer. Is Hewlett Gulch in 19 or 191? I imagine I'll hunt for elk the first few days because that is what my Dad is coming out to hunt with me for, but after Tuesday I might head over to 191 if I'm not having alot of luck for elk and switch into deer mode. Did you have any luck seeing anything yesterday when you were bow hunting? I've been told that commanche Peak, little beaver creek, and fish creek are fairly good spots too (in case you want to try those spots out).

Sounds like you have your bases covered with tags! Nice! Just remember a bull in these units has to be a 4 point (at least a 5" brow tine) on 1 side.
Yes Hewlett Gulch is in 191 and will have deer in it. I have filled many a doe tag in there. I imagine if we received a lot of snow there is a slight (very slight) chance of a elk or 2 in that area. It is literally just west of Poudre Park, if you blink you'll miss the bridge to cross that leads into Hewlett.
I did see 2 raghorn bulls saturday. I got 1 to come in to 20 yards but as I drew my bow and was settling my pins behind his shoulder he didnt give me an extra second to let an arrow fly. Oh well i hope it can happen again.
Commanche peak/ crown point seem to get a lot of pressure, I have hunted up there before a few times. My archery tag is good for 5 units so my options are great, to great it seems some of the time.
Where are you from? Are you able to do any scouting?
Jeff

That's good you saw a couple! Maybe you will get a larger one next time since this one you pulled back on was a little too quick. I actually live in Littleton, so I plan on getting up at least 1 time, hopefully more to do some scouting before season. When you say that the animal has to be 4 pts, are you talking total or just on one side? And is that for both elk and deer? Are you going in rifle season too or is archery all you typically hunt? When is this season over for you? (I'm not real sure on the dates of the archery season.)

Look in the regs on what the definition is for a legal bull in a 4pt restriction unit., but basically you cannot shoot a spike bull is what it comes down to. Yes the bull needs to have 4 points on 1 side but has to have a brow tine that is at least 5 inches long. Generally these are 2 year old bulls or 'raghorns'. There is no point restriction for deer so when you see one PULL THE TRIGGER! With a buck and doe tag you cant go wrong!
I usually try to get a leftover cow tag for a late season to fill the freezer and I like to rifle hunt deer. I will be hunting over by eagle/gypsum during 2nd rifle (I really wanted 3rd rifle but didnt get a tag, they sold out during the leftover license sale too quick) with a buck tag in my pocket.
Archery season is 4 weeks long, ends september 25th I think.

I have family in Highlands ranch (I actually lived with them for a few months a number of years ago when I 1st moved to CO) and worked at claim jumper while I was there. I also have lots of other family scattered in the denver area.
