Use caution when calling elk!!!

While my son was out scouting on a LE elk unit for a hunter last week, he was trying to coax a bugling bull out of some cover to get a look at him with cow and calve calls. The bull worked to within 100 yards and then became quiet. My son kept softly calling and about 10 minutes later a mountain lion came around a tree directly toward him at about 15 yards. He was camo'd and wearing scent-loc, and the lion didn't seem to notice him. As the lion continued toward him, he got up and moved around to the opposite side of a large ponderosa that he was sitting against. The lion kept coming and came right to where he had been sitting and where his bino covers were laying. My son was just on the other side of the tree, 3 to 4 feet away. Somehow he had the nerve to turn on his video camera and capture some shaky but incredible footage of the lion as it checked out where he had been sitting. It began to go around to his left, so he moved to his right, and then the cat turned back and they were face to face, with the tree still paritally between them. As he was videoing he was trying to pick up rocks to throw at the cat. He finally hit the cat and it ran back about 15 feet and turned and snarled at him, then ran down another 20 feet or so. He threw another rock and it went over the cat's head, and the lion turned and looked down toward where the rock had landed, still ignorant to the fact that a human was there. My boy took off his face mask, and threw another rock, and then the cat noticed him and immediately fled down the hill.
He had no weapon as he was just scouting, but done the right thing in not running, as I think that would have provoked the cat to attack.
So just a word of caution as you are out calling, remember, you could end up being the hunted, rather than the hunter!!
Here is a photo we pulled off of his video!! His bino cover is laying in the right front corner of the picture..

A bad day hunting is better than a Good Day at Work!!

SEE!!!

THEM KITTY'S AIN'T AS MEAN AS MOST PEOPLE THINK!!!

HOW OLD IS YOUR BOY???

GREAT FOOTAGE,NEXT TIME CAN YOU GET A LITTLE CLOSER PLEASE???

LOL!!!

SOME OF THE MOST AMAZING THINGS I'VE EVER SEEN WERE IN THE WILD WHILE CALLING!!!

THE ONLY bobcat BETTING THE FOOTAGE MIGHT BE A LITTLE SHAKY???

Hey Bobcat,
He is 23. I think he is a natural cougar magnet. He has seen more cats in the last 7 years than I have seen my whole life. Even had one in the back yard ourside his tent a few years ago!!!
I kind of avoid him when we are out in the hills!!! hehe

That is unbelievable! And to have the presence of mind to get out the camcorder and take some footage . . . crazy. I would have been shakin in my boots! Very cool story and pic to back it up, thanks for sharing.

That's amazing! I've had one encounter with a lion here in Arizona but I wasn't elk calling, just sneaking through the woods, looked ahead and saw a lion sneaking ahead. The lion sat down on the other side of a tree about 5 yards away and we just stared at one another for about three minutes. No weapon so I just went towards it quick, he bolted instantly and disappeared though the trees.

Wow, good story and the picture to go along with it!

Would have to change my drawers after that one

I would have to agree with DonV. My shorts would be completely dirty. I think that you should post the video in the video section even if it is shaky. I think everyone would love to see it.

Jeff

Your kid can come cat hunting with me an time, he would be great bait it sounds like. LOL

A gal had the same experience about 10 miles from here a couple of years ago. Set up, cow calling, gets a sence that she's being watched, turns to look behind her and sees a cat eyeing her from about 12 feet away. She let out a scream and her husband came running. That scream probably scared the cat more than it scared her.lol

I expect we'll be seeing more of these encounters as the cat populations continue to grow.

He only has about 30-40 seconds of footage, but between trying to pick up rocks and shaking in his boots, I thought he done pretty good considering..
I'll see if I can figure out how to post it. LIke I said it is really shaky, but pretty cool anyhow...I can't imagine I could have done any better...I'd probably still be cleaning out the underwear!!!!! Probably wouldn't have even thought about the video camera, more worried about my fat butt getting eaten!!

IS A bad day BEING HUNTED BY A COUGAR better than a Good Day at Work!!????????????????????

"That's when I thought...man, wish I would have brought my gun!"

First a 350+ class bull elk when coyote calling,
now a big cat when elk calling!

When are they gonna make the right calls for the right species!
:)

Great story. Hopefully the video will get posted too.

Great Story
I have had two buddies with similar experiances! 1 buddy fell asleep while bow hunting!! Only to wake to a lion putting the sneak on him. Took a few rocks to discourage the cat at 10 feet. The other buddy was tracking a deer he arrowed and a cat was stalking him. Same story sent blocker and doe in heat. He flung arrows in the direction of the cat not wanting to hit it. It took all of his arrows before the cat backed down. Great pics and story

"That pepperspray will be $29.99 please."

Incredible story. Loved the photo. What an experience.

I have only seen fresh track but... yes, I have pepperspray on my belt for the day this my ever happen.

I can't wait to share this one with my buddie. He was so freaked out about the cougar behind the deer photo that was real or unreal he began carrying a some sort of protection for a encounter with a cougar. Hell, he may even take up duck hunting in the marshland to steer clear of cougars.

Thanks for sharing...look forward to full footage. Try the Most Amazing Video show for some cash, too.

I wouldn't have had that experience...the p*ss runnin down my leg woulda scared off the cat......

Niiiiiice kitty, niiiiiice kitty.

Closest I've ever been to a live coug (that I know of) was years ago up huntin' I parked my truck just off a dirt road and slept in the back in my sleeping bag... got up in the morning and had fresh cat tracks in my tire tracks walking up the road past my truck and back in to the brush not 10 feet from my truck... I was on the alert that day to say the least...

Great pic and story.

Hey guys, I have not forgot about the video clip, just can't find a program to use. What is a good program to use to download a clip from?
I've got it on a DVD but need to figure out how to put it into a jpeg file, I think..
Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks

Couple years ago was helping my buddy on the ar301 hunt in utah up in the strawberry area and ended up calling in a small black bear. bear ran over a ridge, down the draw and stopped 20 yards from me. I had never seen a bear in the wild before so i was dropping a load in my pants at that point. I turned around and was screaming on my radio that a freaking bear was chasing me. I know your not supposed to run, but in this case it scared the bear off.

Went muddin last night with some buddies in my 87 RamCharger. Well, we think we're takin a shortcut. And due to the recent logging up there, we think that this is the right shortcut and they tanktrapped it. "WTH, I'll just go over it" it was soft dirt, and I would've made it, but I lost momentom (sp?) at the top not wanting to drag my rear. Anyways, I'm highcenter'ed and since my tires are on their last leg, I get a popped tire from a rock.

It's me and two buddies, up in the mountains, surrounded by pine trees, and the like. It's 2 AM and we're tellin storries about bear maulings, and cougar stories. Well it's a full moon out, and I hear some twigs slightly snap probably 30 yards away. We all listen and we hear something that sounded almost like a "hiss". We all heard it twice, then decided that it would be best to get back in the truck. lol my buddy comes up, pulls me back, and helps me with my tire. Lets just say that my bed felt really good at 3;30 last night.
