Moon phases

Hey guys, Just wondering if anybody knows what the full moon does to the rut. I'm starting my hunt on the 15th and full moon is the 17th. I'm hunting in Southwest Montana. thanks, Hatrick

I have heard that the rut is not affected by the moon nor is it affected by the weather. The reason is that cows have to breed at a certain time (not a patricular day, but a few days give or take) because if the cows are bred too early the calves are born too early in the spring and die. If they're bred too late then the calves are born too late in the spring and don't have enough time to put on the weight necessary to get them through the winter.

That's just what I have heard, but it seems to make sense.

the timing of the rut probably won't change much. however the time of day that the elk are active may vary considerably. A friend hunted in Id. a few years ago and the elk were silent in the morning and then starting getting fired up in the late afternoon and into the evenings, they called in elk but always in the afternoon / evening. Don't know if it had anything to do with the moon or not, just food for thought. If it were me I'd be out at both times of day trying to make something happen and hoping for the best. Good luck, sound like a fun hunt.
