Unit 15

I am a long time reader, but first time poster. My buddy and I drew the second bowhunt in Unit 15 in New Mexico and I wanted to see of there were any reports coming out of there so far this year. Its such a big unit I am in a quandry as to where to start looking. We like to get in on foot as far from any roads as possible and camp where we end up at the end of the day. Leaving in less than a week....been waiting for this since we left the elk woods last year. WOOOHOOO. Good luck to all.

My buddies and I have been in unit 15 since the opener on September 1. We are going back this friday and will hunt through sunday evening. The bulls are starting to gather small groups of cows and are vocal in the early morning and right about sundown. It rained on us every afternoon for two or three hours. It is a muddy mess up there right now. My friend missed a 6x6 at 60 yards that he thought would score around 320. I put a stalk on a decent 5x5 but couldn't get a shot. The bulls are in just about every canyon, we are hunting up above the lake and have seen a lot of elk around cat springs. The bulls are still up high. We can't wait to get back in there on friday, they should be more vocal and easier to locate. Hunt ridges away from the roads and you'll be into elk all day long. Good luck.

My nephew just gave me the latest from 15. He got back a few hours ago from the lake. Elk are callin almost all night and lots during the day with them picking it up heavy before sunset.
Looks like it might be a heck of a second hunt! Good luck!
