I am looking to hunt Elk with Muzzleloader in "06" and have no Idea where to begin??? The Best state would be a Start??

I'm not looking for an 8x8, just a place where a guy could get back in with his GPS and tent to see animals...

Which state offers OTCounter muzzleloader Bull tags if any??? or draw odds which are reasonable?

All comments would Help me begin...Thanks

Utah has an over the counter, first come first served on a quota of Muzzleloader elk permits. You can purchase this permit in mid June. The hunt starts in early November, so it is more of a migration or winter range hunt. Probably not quite what your looking for.

smokepole, thanks for the response... I'm just starting to do research on my elk hunt... it might have to be "07" instead of "06" just to get a tag. But Ill keep Utah in mind and check it out.

Thanks.

I would go Idaho if I was looking for OTC. You can get early B tags and just choose to use your muzz if you like. I suggest that you apply to colorado...that statewide tag is usually only every other year though. So apply this year to get the point for next year. I also suggest you apply to NM for some Muzz only hunts. I drew my first time. So....Idaho for a guarantee(Back up plan) ...and apply to the other 2.

Cheers

Washington has OTC tags and the hunt starts Oct.1. Bulls will still be in rut. Am giving it a shot this year myself for first time. If unsuccessful in first season, there is also a late season in Nov./Dec. Scott/couesbitten

LAST EDITED ON Sep-24-05 AT 04:42PM (MST)[p]Washington is spike only for the general hunt so I wouldn't recommend it to a non-resident. There are "any bull" permits available in the drawing but chances are it would take several years to draw. We have more hunters and less elk than just about any other western state...I sure wouldn't be hunting elk here if I didn't live here. Also, the only late season for Rocky Mtn Elk with muzzleloader is in the northeast which is very difficult hunting with very low success rates (around 1 or 2 percent)

The New Mexico and Az. suggestions were excellent choices but the odds of you grawing in either state is slim. Build Preference points in Az. by applying. You might get lucky the first year but look at it as an investimate for the future if you don't. The statewide muzzleloader tag in Colorado can usually be drawn with one point so apply in "06" and plan on hunting in "07." Colorado is over run with elk right now and the success rates there are good. Southeastern Oregon has an either sex muxxleloader elk hunt that barely fills each year and Oregon is the state with the second most elk killed each year.

GOOD LUCK!
