Anyone been hunting the Sierra Madre or Snowy Range areas? I've been hunting every weekend south of Rawlins and it seems the rut hasn't even really started yet. Been seeing elk every weekend, although none close enough for a shot, but really haven't heard any rutting activity. Buddy of mine shot a nice 5x5 near Blackhall this weekend.

Friends over there this last weekend around green mountain said they were going nuts after dark. Not much during the day maybe 20 in three days.

Ive got a couple of co-workers down there right now.

Its been years since I've hunted those areas, but seemed like each year there was more hunting pressure. We'd usually have one good morning a season when we could get a good group of bulls going, but other than that you'd hear them mostly at night and they'd mum up as the sun rose. Its September 20. The rut is on, whether they are making much noise about it or not.

i hunt the blackhall country, but during rifle season. i spend a bunch of time up there in september scouting though. in the area i hunt at least, the rut generally seems to peak within a couple days either way of the first of october. i had 8 bulls going nuts in the drainage i was in opening morning of deer season last year, then the slaughter of 2 points by road hunters commenced, and things quieted down. as much as i like to hunt in the snow, i hate to see it opening weekend of deer season. last year was crazy. there was fairly strong rut activity late in the month again for a couple days, too. about the 23-24. seems strange, but for whatever reason, they just always seem to be late.

i've got a cool bull that i'm after this year-haven't seen him in about 6 weeks, but i'm guessing he'll be 290-300ish 6 point, but his g-1's come down along side his face-shaped normal, only upside down, if that makes any sense. got a wierd gene bouncing around up there-one of the guys i hunt with took a small 5 point last year that was the same way.
