I got back last week from the archery elk hunt in the Fishlake area. In the 14 days we hunted, I could not believe that we could not find the elk in numbers anywhere we went. All the way from Gooseberry near I-70 to Niotche and Gates at the top, we would find a few here and there but no real numbers to speak of. I thought the herd was supposed to be getting bigger. Also knew 2 guys with big bull tags, they were in Sheep Valley and they said the same thing, not many elk. Did anybody hunting that area have the same experience?

i hunted fishlake with a friend this weekend. we were into elk the whole time we were there. he killed a bull sunday afternoon. we saw nine bulls that morning. the bull he killed will gross somewhere close to 350.

i saw two bulls that were bigger than the one he killed, but my friend wasn't with me either time.

the whole time we were there we only saw one other person and he was just videoing, not hunting

I spent a few days up on the Fishlake with "Greenringer" from PA who drew a tag and we had a blast. He was in bulls every day. Passed on quite a few bulls, and seen a few smokers. He harvested a nice bull and had a great hunt. Also helped another guy from northern Utah and called in a good bull which he took on Sunday. The bulls were really quiet Friday and Saturday, but were fired up pretty good on Sunday.
They seemed to stay in the deep, thick stuff, but there seemed to be a lot of bulls in the area we were hunting...

Like antlerrick said I had a great hunt on the Fishlake. I saw 38 bulls while hunting and passed on 12, 5X or better bulls at 40 yards or less. I was into elk every day and had a great time. I have to thank all the guys here at MM who shared information with me......without their help I think it might have been a rough hunt. I'll try to post a picture if I can...

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-05 AT 09:09PM (MST)[p]The Fishlake can be tough, but once you find the bulls, it is a great hunt...
