Just spoke to friend that was on the early deer hunt in 111. Normally a fair number of LARGE bulls are spotted in the area he hunts (East Side of the mountain range)...but this year not much was spotted. He was told by some locals out of Ely that many of the bulls have moved to the southern part of the zone.

Thanks for the info guys, I can't afford to hire anybody this year & I would like to do it with out a guide, so I'm just looking for a few tips since I haven't been in the area this time of year. I haven't been down in the area of 221, or 222. I just got back from 111 and found some descent bulls.. Good luck on all your hunts. Any other info would be greatly appreciated. You can send a PM if you like. I would be willing to share info with anybody that has an area 10 tag. I know this area very well, I've lived and hunted in it for 18 years.

I took a 6x7 (350 gross) on the 5th day in a big canyon in the PJ jungle. We shot at 0740 and finally got him out at 1500 the next day. Hunter pressure pushed all the elk in to the thick stuff after the first day. There were a lot of hunters with horses, quads and helpers. A lot were road hunting/spotting but didn't seem to see much. It looked like the elk were feeding on Pinons as there is a Mega crop of them this year.
My elk was bugling back and forth with another bull across a deep canyon (in November!!), he worked down a steep, rocky hillside and gave us one chance at 432 yards. there were some anxious minutes after the shot as he stepped out of sight.
Fortunately, he went about 10 yards and dropped in the trees. we had scouted a total of 9 days and hunted 5.
I'll try to post a picture later.
Good Luck
I have not heard from ElMacho, we spoke with him and his Dad several times while we were out.

Well, we gotterdun........long hunt, pretty much the same situation as NEB. NEB, Dale, Dave and Jean----great to meet you. Really appreciate meeting you and your kind advice.
We ended up filling out on day 12. Bull has my dream frame- very symmetrical and clean- only missing about 2-3inches of dagger point. Very heavy beams. 14 inch H1 -Goes about 342 gross, mid 330 net.

NEB is correct.....pressure and weather have them in the jungle. Find a place without pressure and you late season and muzzleloader hunters will do well.

Take care and good luck to those still hunting.

Mark

Mark,
Congrats! Glad to hear you did well. Does this mean a taxidermy bill? Email me some pictures.
Did your Dad stay for the whole time or did he go home?
Where did you guys end up? did he have to come out on the backpacks? When we left on the 7th we ran into the G+F officers, they only knew of ~6 elk having been checked out.
Jean and Dale leave for her unit 10 bull hunt tomorrow, I'm leaving Wednesday morning for my Daughter's unit 9 hunt which starts on Friday.
Nate

Nate,
Good job on the bull. Jean told me about it today and the terrific shot you made to kill him. She didn't know what caliber and kind of rig you were shooting when I asked though. Please post a pic of the bull. She told me he has lots of mass and good points on a neat, narrow frame.

You all have a great time in 9 & good luck! My Dad and I are off to the Kaibab Wednesday, I'll send you some pics of what we bag.

Jim

Jim,
Thanks.
Used a .338 Mag with 200 gr. ballistic tips; handloads 73 gr. of 4350. Remington 700 with Leupold 3-9 vx-II.
The first shot was great (luck?), he staggered briefly and I took 2 more shots before he stepped in the trees---- both of these were complete misses. The first shot had done the job though, Shattered the front leg with full chest passage to heart and lungs. We recovered the slug from underneath the hide on the opposite side.
I'll post some pics later if I can overcome my computer skills handicap.
Good luck
Nate

I'm getting nowhere fast trying to post the pics.
It's like thrashing in quicksand, the more I struggle , the deeper I go.
Jim, shoot me your email and I'll forward the pics.
They are mega size and I don't know how to reduce them.
Nate

Nate,

Email sent, I'll post them for you if that's ok.

I like your elk rig, similar to mine except mine's a Ruger M77 MKII SS model. Someday I'll draw a tag where I can actually use the thing! I'm impressed you find the time to handload as busy as you must be. I'm setting my handloading operation back up now that I've "retired" from coaching. Looking forward to spending more time shooting for recreation and getting to hunt more often, providing I can draw a tag.

Did you draw any javelina or turkey tags? I pulled a Kaibab turkey tag and an archery javelina permit for the cluster of northwestern units.

I'll watch for the elk pics...

Jim

Rich,
I've sent the pics.
I did not draw any Spring tags but may be able to pick up a leftover archery Javalina tag. We do have Hualapai Turkey tags so I'll get to go.
Most of my handloads are ones I worked up several years ago. When I need more I pull out the "recipe" and can crank out 30-40 rounds in an hour or so.
thanks,
Nate

Here's neb's big Nevada 231 bull elk he bagged last week. I'd say it was worth the wait for the tag! Nice bull Nate and a heckuva shot by all accounts.
