Nevada Elk Poaching

Hopefully they'll be able to catch this guy. There's 142 tags this year in that area so maybe they can weed him out.
ELKO - The opening of bull elk hunting in northeast Nevada hit a sour note on Saturday when a hunter shot and left a large 6X6 bull elk in the field to waste north of Delano Springs in the northeast corner of Elko County.

?He shot the elk, circled it one time, lifted its head and then walked off and didn't return,? said Jerry Smith, supervising game warden for the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW).

Another elk hunter reported the incident to game wardens, but by the time they arrived, it was too late to salvage the meat. The individual who reported the poaching said he expected the hunter to return, but he never came back to claim the animal.

?This is one of the most sickening things I have witnessed in the many years that I've been a game warden,? said Smith. ?It has infuriated other hunters who are hunting in the area.?

While it is unknown why the hunter failed to return, Smith speculates that it may be a case of ?horn hunting.? He said the antlers may not have been large enough or that the hunter didn't want the elk because some of its tines were broken.

?You couldn't ask for a nicer bull in terms of its body size and condition. It's just unimaginable that someone would walk off and leave it in the field,? said Smith.

The hunter who reported the incident was more than a mile away when it was shot. He viewed the scene through a spotting scope.

NDOW is asking anyone with information about the poaching to call Operation Game Thief at 1-800-992-3030 or report it to any NDOW office. Callers can remain anonymous and a cash reward will be paid upon conviction.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is the state agency responsible for the protection, restoration and management of fish and wildlife resources, and the promotion of boating safety on Nevada's waters.

Wildlife offices are located in Las Vegas, Henderson, Winnemucca, Fallon, Elko, and Reno. For more information, contact the agency web site at www.ndow.org.

This story made me sick , I hope they catch this bottom-feeding lowlife scumbag and cut his balls off .

It's scary to think there are people out there who would do something like that. The cold hearted .......oops, can't say that here.

There are a lot more scum hunters out there then you realize. I turned a kid in this year for killing a cow elk while he was shooting at a bull over a 1000 yards away. I saw them shooting at the bull across the canyon and couildn't believe it when it went down. I ran into this kid a couple days later when I was packin my friends bull out. I asked him what the heck he was doing shooting at the bull from six or seven hundred yards away. He started bragging about how it was over a 1000 yards because his range finder wouldn't register. Then he said he killed the cow. That was enough for for me, I grabbed my horse and walked away. When I got off the mountain I called the game warden. There were only a few tags for this area so it wasn't hard to track the kid down. I talked to the warden a couple weeks ago and he said the kid confessed. They need to really put it to guys like that.

As if it isn't hard enough to draw a tag in Nevada anyway, without people abusing the privilege.

I wish the public could understand that poachers are NOT hunters! They are CRIMINALS! Flat out! Hunters have ethics, poachers don't and don't care either.

Its all about hunting if you cant see all of the horns dont shoot. If you do shoot take care of business. Its once in a life time unless your lucky. This guy just makes it harder for the rest of us.

Nevada wardens are pretty good with the forensic evidence. If there's abullet recovered there's a good chance they'll get this S.O.B.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-18-05 AT 10:30PM (MST)[p]Wes, my buddy was helping someone with a bull tag in area 8 several days ago and they also found a dead bull with his antlers cut off. The full bodied bull was still there. They contacted the game warden. This makes 3 bull elk poaching instances this year in Nevada that I know of. 2 of those in area 8. It sickens me to know that it takes years to build up an elk herd and there are people out there that just don't care about ethics. fatrooster.

no offense to any of you but this is what happens when you are more worried about SCORES AND RECORD BOOKS than the joys and pleasures of hunting. lets turn hunting back into what it used to be, a way to get the best enjoyment possible out of life in the best scenery around, instead of what it's becoming, a corporate sponsered pissing match,
