KTC,

The subject of this thread is for you.

Here is a story and some pic's in the best order that I can give it to you from our 2005 Montana Combo Hunt.

We started this hunt out with no snow on Saturday afternoon and Cody picked out a bull up high on the mountain. First shot ( 300 WBY ) was just a little high and over the back at 370 yards, the second shot hit him on the move a little far back. The bull moved into a small patch of timber and did not come out. Cody and Steven went up the mountain to see if they could find the bull while I went back to camp to get a truck to haul out the elk. On the way back with the truck, we noticed an elk slowly crossing the road and standing just on the side of a small lake. The bull then went right into the lake and started smimming for the other side. I quickly pulled out my Bino's and saw that it was the bull that Cody had shot at. I jumped out of the truck and yelled up the mountain to Cody and Steve " Bull is in the Lake"....." Bull is in the Lake". You could start to see orange vests coming down the mountain fast! The bull continued to swim around the lake and would not come out....he was hurt and probably thought the water would feel better. This bull swam around this small lake for a couple of minutes before slowly walking up on shore where Cody put another shot into him.......guess what? He turned around and went back out into the lake and died. See Pic's

Oh crap...it was cold enough with-out going into the water. Well this bull floated on top of the water pretty well and we got smart! Throw a rope with a rock attached past the bull and pull him in. Here is the pic with the rope and rock, bull pulled up to shore and the final ending of Cody's bull. What an experience.

Greg shot a nice 20" four point muley on Sunday night that I do not have a picture for. It is shown in the group picture at the end of this long post.

On Monday morning it snowed almost 18" until late in the afternoon. We could not hunt until just before dark once the snow storm stopped. The whitetails were out in force and Richard picked this great buck off with his 300 WBY at 360 yards. Time to pack out another animal.

43828060546cdc80.jpg

On Tuesday morning, Steve spotted this great 4 point muley almost 5 miles up the mountain in snow up to your waist in places due to the high winds in this area. After a long 4 hour hike and a few shots later, here is the well earned trophy.
4382815f5684c962.jpg

On Wendsday morning we were finally able to locate two good bulls bedded on an opposing hillside in the snow. These bulls were 400 yards away. Richard and Steve both made great shots on these bulls.

Dicks Bull is 282". He was wearing orange when he was hunting, but he like's pictures without it. So much for you monstermuley POLICE!

Here is Steve's bull.

Just as Richard and Steve started shooting at their elk, ( Cody, Greg and myself...Alan...aka..Elkslayer ) were pushing another draw that we knew held both elk and deer. Cody was up high in the draw and we were able to push 30 deer and then 20 elk ( no branch antlered bulls ) up towards him. Cody made an unreal 490 yards ( 300 WSM ) off-hand shot on this great muley. When he showed me where the dead deer was at and from where he shot it from...I almost fell over. The shot was a great one and the deer pull would be even harded. Oh well, time for some more packing.

I decided enough was enough and it was time to go find a deer for me. On Wendsday night I spotted this good 4 point muley chasing some does up high on the mountain. After a good stalk and one shot from the 300 WSM, here is my buck.

We hunted Thursday morning and it was very slow. Greg had to return to work.
The pressure was now on me since I still had a bull tag to fill. I decided to go up high on Thursday night to see if something even though we had not spotted any elk coming out at night. Most elk we spotted were still out feeding in the mornings. We soon spotted a small heard of 10 cows with one branch antlered bull and made a stalk. The wind was blowing around 30mph, but at least you knew what way it was going. We had a hard time locating this mall herd, but kept hearing cow talk and a faint squeel once in a while. I soon spotted a few cows feeding 80 yards in front of us and we hid beside some small christmas trees along the side of this hill. The elk continued to slowly feed in front of us and into the wind. They kept coming and coming......soon we realized that this was no SMALL herd of elk. I counted over 90 cows and calfs with a few spikes and a few smaller 3 and 4 points. We soon figured out and could see that this herd was 250 strong. The bid herd bull was far back in the heard and was around 310". The elk continued to feed in front of me at 80 yards for 45 minutes while I had my 7MM on the shooting sticks and dialed to 14 power to make out the animals as they walked through the timber. It was getting very close to the close of shooting time and I had to keep dialing my scope down to collect good light. We soon noticed that the lead cow was starting to head up hill...oh crap! I told the guys that if she went another 10 feet that she would wind us. I was thinking that I was going to have to shoot a small 4 point up towards the lead cow, but this small 6 point was nice enough to walk out in front of me at 60 yards broadside. Put the 7MM with 162 Gr. Hornady Interlocks right through both shoulders. What a site to see 250 animals haul A_ _ and all the snow going 10 feet up in the air. It looked like snowmobiles taking-off. My bull went 20 yards, hit the snow on his face, got back up and went into the middle of 40 standing cows. Oh crap again, then the cows took off while the bull staggard a the end of the line.....one more shot through the lungs and SEE YA! The first shot had him, but it was sure fun to fire another with the new gun.

Here is my bull

DELK? Duh! OK I get it now. Took me a minute. I am mentally challenged. I am so slow I even looked at the keyboard to see if the D was by the E trying to determine your error. I got it though. I really did.

Lots of bone in that truck Alan. Looks like you almost had an overload. You know you could have always called and I could have helped you back to Utah.;-)

Nice animals. You guys did well once again. Are you tired of hunting yet? Seems like the draw Gods were good to you this year. Time to kick back and enjoy the memories of 2005 as you plot next year's strategy.

KTC...you crack me up!

Yea, I am a little tired of hunting now.

Hope you draw your Utah Limited Elk tag next year and post some good pic's. If you have an extra horse, maybe I can come and ride with you and Matt.

Looking forward to 2006.....mAYBE ANOTHER gOLDEN sPOON yEAR?

Congratulations to you & all of your friends...truly a hunt to remember!!

I especially like the story and pics of the swimmer, a unique experience.

Thanks for sharing.

Mark

If whoever gimped that bull knew how to shoot you might have kept it out of the pond, while it can happen to anyone I can't understand being proud of a crappy shot. not something to brag abuot IMO.

huntindude

Did we ever say we were happy about the way that bull died? NO! Where we happy that we retrieved this bull? YES! Was it something that we have ever experienced before? NO!

Are you perfect? Sounds like it!

So if you hit a ( say Nice Bull ) not to well, but were able to reteive it and were happy about the animal you harvested....you would not post a picture? I call B.S.

Many animals are wounder and not retrieved each year in archery, muzz and rifle hunts.

As hunters we all want to harvest the animals as humainly as possible.

At least you were man enough to say what you think.

I was sure that someone on this site would come up with something negative to say about this post. Thanks for not letting me down!

Bad boys, bad boys, what ya gonna do when they come for you...

Watch out! The ethics police oare on patrol.

Maybe I should tell you the story about the gut shot deer?

How about the broken front leg fiasco?

How about the ethical 298 yard shot, only to range it later at an unethical 303?

Did you hear the one about 2 deer in one shot? That one is a classic.;-)

Not to worry Elkslayer. I rarely drop an elk in one shot. Hell, I rarely drop anything with one shot. I need to get warmed up first. They ain't no fun to shoot at until ya got 'em running.;-)

Elkslayer,
I'm not trying to be goody two shoes here. in the 20+ bulls I've taken I have had to clean up two screw ups, both 100% my fault. I don't like to talk about it and if I had pictures of those elk before they were dead I'd have chucked the film . if it were me I'd take the pictures of the dead bull and leave it at that. you guys are probably not bad hunters but the bull in the pond was a screw up plain and simple, there's no entertainment value in it . if that makes me the ethics police I guess I've been called worse. that said, looks like you guys had a great hunt. I really like the whitetail, been looking for one like that.

Awesome pics and story!!!
Thanks for taking the time to share it!
Don't let the self proclaimed perfect hunters get to you. There's always one in every post! :)
Congrats on a great hunt.

Dude,

You said "there's no entertainment value in it". His post was entertaining and the pic's were great.

I am still amazed how people on these threads continue to take cheap shots at someone who posts pic's.

I should shut up I know but you don't get it. the only gripe I had was the pictures of a gimped live animal, a screw up. eveything else looked great, if you think that's entertainment call the outdoor channel and tell them you want to see all the animals gut shot so the kill takes longer, you'd love it. but I doubt they would go for it, therefore I think I'm like most hunters. if I'm wrong here I'll go back to reading BUGLE magazine and pretend all hunters do the right thing.

LAST EDITED ON Nov-23-05 AT 11:56AM (MST)[p]huntindude,

So the only animals worth posting pictures on the web, showing in magazine articles and on the hunting shows are all " 1 SHOT KILLS?" Get real.

Sounds like the BUGLE magazine is for you. Most hunters try to do the right thing , but apparantly we are not as good of a shot as you!

I give up, the fact everyone on this site thinks you're right means you're onto something. let's all blast away. it dosen't matter where you hit 'em, the longer they stagger the more pictures you get. heck they might end up in the water or hung up in a fence! cool! just take a respectful picture of the animal after he's dead and try to do better next time, nobody could fault that. I'll shut up now, I guess you showed me.

Dude,

Do not tell me "I don't get it" Just because I think you are wrong doesn't mean I "don't get it". Its not hard to see your gripe. You have expressed it more than once.

I will add to my last post a little more clearly. He did nothing wrong by posting a picture of a wounded elk! Obviously, he respects the animal and didn't mean to wound it.

I will shut up now and not take any more time away from a great thread.

Elkslayer,
Did I fall out of the inner circle? I didn't get the memo on when or where the barbeque was taking place. Your in charge of steaks, Warbird and KTC can bring the beer, and I'll bring the jello salad. Just let me know with or without carrots. :)

I'll be looking for my invite next year. I don't bring much to the table, but at least you will get up plenty early. ;-)

Thanks for taking the time to share the pictures and story. It was a good read.

dude -
Now would be the time to quit posting on this thread and try to make up for it on another one, BY POSTING SOMETHING POSITIVE!!!
You are in the minority with your opinion of the pictures, drop it before you come off as an @ss.
Best regards.

Elkslayer,

That's a heck of a load of antler! Nice post, you guys got some great photos. All I'll say is everybody wounds one at some point!
I would love to know if you're hunting private land and what general part of the state. I'm not looking for secret spots or specific ranches, just want to get a feel for where that type of hunting exists. Any info you wnat to offer would be appreciated. Congrats on a great hunt

The recovery of the elk is what I enjoyed. It is when we as hunters lose a wounded animal and never do recover it.It can happen to the best of shots.Good job on the recovery, the pond not only looks cold but deep also.

We losted a deer one year that a buddy had shot it tried to swim the Missouri river and it made it about halfway and it went under, it never did come up that we saw,we checked downriver hoping it would wash up at the next tight spot but no deer, I guess that was a screw-up but hey I wasn't going swimming in that ice laden water.

Awesome year you've had there Alan!

I thought the pics of the bull in the lake were classic. I think I told you about the buck I had jump into Mountain Dell Reservoir and die after a second shot. I sure wish I'd had my camera to take pics of that one 16 years ago.

No one would believe it unless they saw it. There's surely nothing wrong with posting them, particularly for a job well done.

Since when is taking two or three shots unethical. One shot one kill is surely the goal, but rarely the norm.

Congrats again on a super cool hunt!

Cheers,
Pete

Respect the animal this! Respect the animal that! If all you want to do is respect darn thing, how about not trying kill the it in the first place. It's not very respectful to send a projectile of any kind thought the chest of a animal. I want to hunt them, kill them, and eat them! I respect the hunters for finishing what they started.

Awesome story, and GREAT photos.

Elkslayer,....
Great story and pictures. Don?t mind huntindude only an idiot would run his mouth like that

Hey skunktard,
I said I would shut up and let people take pot shots ( and poorly placed I might add)at me for having ethics but your's was just to good to stay quiet. I only hope you didn't miss a whole day from your paper route to think up such a clever response.

Huntindude, Have you ever wondered why your kids look like the paper man? That's right I have been delivering more then just the paper to your house! Hey I Guess I felt guilty that's why last month?s subscription was free!

hey dude,
Lighten up a little. I didn't see one picture of what you call a gimpy animal. I enjoyed seeing the swiming elk pics. If he would have said they spotted the elk swimming and then shot it as it was leaving the lake, you wouldn't have known the difference.
I don't want to see pics of a wounded animal either , but this were unique.

congrats on a GREAT HUNT.....I think we all strive to harvest our game with one shot....that is what the game deserves...but sometimes it does not happen that way....thanks for the pics..and the whole story...we have all been there...let me know if you need any company next year....lol....

Holy cow Alan, only on MM can this happen!

A guy posts a story and pictures of what appears to be a very fun and successful hunt. The thread turns into an ethical do's and don't's debate because some guys are sitting home on their ass wondering why "their" public land animals are shot by someone other than themselves. Only to turn into a thread bashing the chosen careers of one another. To top it all off, it becomes public knowledge how some guy's old ladies are hosing the paper boy. How cool is that?

This post is getting better every day.

Boy, I sure am glad that I did not post the picture of the cut off elk legs sticking up in the snow with an animal head at the other end....looked like a elk was on it's back and gave up before we could " SHOOT HIM WITH ONE ETHICAL SHOT ".

tHe OnlY ElkSlaYer sTill wOnDerIng wHaT We dId wrOnG????

Sorry Elkslayer but I can't hold my tongue any longer. Your last remark about "tHe OnlY ElkSlaYer sTill wOnDerIng wHaT We dId wrOnG????" seems ridiculous and I hope you are kidding. If you guys are taking 370 yard shots and missing and then hitting the elk "a little far back" and taking offhand 490 yard shots, then I can tell you what you are doing wrong. I don't understand how posting pictures of a wounded animal on the internet is ok and admitting that the shooter took shots that he obviously wasn't capable of. This is the kind of stuff that will help bring hunting to an end. The story would have been fine if it were a little fabricated to not show the shooters incompetence behind the trigger. There are plenty of us MM Members (majority.....YES) that don't appreciate hearing or seeing this sort of stuff. Wounding animals is fine if you are 12 years old and are in the learning curve but for God's sake don't admit to something like this as a grown adult over the internet with pictures to prove it. At least admit that you guys learned something and we can all move on. Maybe practicing before the season opens would be a good start. I appreciate the fact that the animal was later killed but please don't make us hunters and sportsmen look like a bunch of derelicts and think that it's ok. I am not trying to single you out. There are other posts where hunters take 60 plus yard shots with a bow and wonder why they hit the animal in the face and it walked around with the arrow sticking out of it for a few weeks until somebody killed it blahblahblah.
Mistakes happen to everyone but let's learn from them for once. I get disgusted when people don't take the sport of hunting seriously. We have to do everything we can to protect it. Congratulations on your successful hunts.

Congrats, Personally I think you must have done everything right to have such great success. Always good to here from hunters enjoying the outdoors
Justin

Your success is why many pay those high fees to hunt in Montana. I bet you turned a lot of heads and had people not watching the road as you went home. The location of the area you hunted is something you don't want to get around.

Congrats elkslayer. I enjoyed the pictures very much. Nice to hear you were able to recover the elk from the water too.

Sounds like the hunting trip of a lifetime. Nothing better than having such a successful hunt with good friends.

Congrats Alan,

Great pictures and a terrific hunt! You have had quite a year. Thanks for sharing. I found nothing wrong with you rpic's either.

Chad

Looks like you guys had a great time. Congratulations on some fine critters. I have to agree with Zigga about the long shots though. Sorry if it hurts your feelings, but its not even about ethics, try common sense. Just becuse your 300 super flat shooting magic rifle will shoot that far, doesnt mean you can. When you get out past 400 yards, thats a aweful long shot and the risk of a poor shot its magnified 4 times that of a 100 yard shot. Then throw in wind drift to the equation, and then perhaps buck fever, and wah lah, wounded elk swimming laps in a pond. Other than that, great story and pics.

Congrats on a heck of a hunt. That is an awesome load of antler in the back of that truck.

I don't have any problem with any of the pictures. In fact I enjoyed them all including the swimming elk. But I will have to agree with a few of the guys about the shot selections. Or lack of shot selections. Especially with the given conditions. I know right where my rifle is going to hit out to 400 yds but you throw in the wind and other factors and I no longer am confident.

You guys have got to be kidding. Why in the hell are you giving this guy a rash? I know, I know, I heard all of the Christlike reasons, but give me a break, every animal we shoot is wounded for some period of time.

Look at OLN, The Men's Channel, or the Outdoor Channel, how many bow shots do they show where the animal takes off with a arrow in him? I hate to breat it to you, but the animal is mortally wounded and runs off for 30 minutes or whatever while the hunter gives him time to die before retrieving it. The rifle hunters blast them and away they go.

This is hunting folks. We shoot and kill stuff. There is no denying that it hurts and kills the animal even with a well placed shot. If you want something that is dead and do not want to accept the fact that you hurt, wounded, and killed go buy your heads from e-bay.

I hope you post another hunt picture sometime Alan. This would be enough for me to tell people to stuff it up their butts. Like you said come hang out with us on the application thread. I will see what I can do to liven that one up a bit.;-)

ktc,

"every animal we shoot is wounded for some period of time."

Please tell me you are joking. In plain text it is hard to tell if someone is joking or serious. The only problem I have is the fact that it was a poorly placed shot and pictures were put on the internet for people like PETA and the Buffalo Field Campaign to see, among other ignorant groups. You don't think they read these posts as well? We fight these people everyday and bad selection of pics on the internet only fuels the fire. You don't read stories by Chuck Adams on making a shot he wasn't capable of and then showing pictures of it. I watch plenty of hunting shows and they attempt to show the animal go down quickly, not hang around and die. Yes, they edit plenty. I've taken more than enough big-game to know what a quick and deadly shot looks like and I would not consider them at any point "wounded". All I would like to see is people practicing their shots before the season and knowing what their limitations are. No one on the planet should be taking an offhand 490 yard shot or a 69 yard shot at a live animal with a bow. That is the problem!

Man, I wish I could screw up and end up with a truck full of bone like that...

I know the first thing I would say if I saw that rig riding down the road is, "Yup. There goes a bunch of unprepared hunters that don't know what they're doing."

Zig,

No I am not joking. Some with a rifle go right away, but look at the Barnes are junk thread in the rifle and bow forum. How many follow up shots are required? How many times do we hear about the heart and lung shot? He ran about 50 yards and tipped over is what we say. I would say during those 50 yards he is mortally wounded. Death rarely happens in a matter of seconds.

PETA embellishes slaughter house photos too. They are idiots and I waste no time fighting them or their cause. I really do not care if they see Alan's photos. Something is wrong if a so called hunter tip-toes around a damn PETA member. I have seen how hunting shows are made. Kill the animal and work in reverse and attempt to make a good story. I would rather hear Chuck's real story than a bunch of fabricated and edited hooey of his attempts. He is not a hero of mine anyway.

I am done with this subject. Alan showed us pictures of his hunt and I hope he does it again. If some people don't like his story and want to deny we kill stuff, don't read it.

Wounding an animal while hunting is like masturbation. There are those who admit doing it, and those who lie about it.

Anyway, you are entitled to your opinion and I can respect it even if I do not like it.

Elkslayer,

Congrats on all of the animals, what a hunt huh! I had a post awhile back that turned into a ethical bashing session, (had over 100 posts on it!). I have my own opinion about the shots and pics, and I am going to keep them to myself. If you did your best to get the animal as ethically as you could and was successful in finally harvesting the animal then you were succesful and probably had a blast doing it. So I say, just keep hunting and let all the holier than thou hunters keep hunting in their dream worlds. In fact what I think is ethical would probably differ from you think is ehtical. We all have differnet levels of ethics and hunt according to them. Just let their comments rool off your back and show us more pics of next years hunt, good luck!

The monster muley court is now in session with the honerable huntindude presiding.

Case # one two many shots.

ETHICS POLCE VS ELKSLAYER

I juror #1 say the defendent is innocent.

OK, but if I'm judge I'm going to have to ask for a change of venue , maybe Boone & crockett or RMEF. from the responses I've seen here I don't think I could have a fair trial where I can only come up with a couple jurors who's first name isn't Bubba,Goober or Billy Bob.

What is wrong with the jurors names you list when the judge has a name like Dude?

Change of venue is Denied. If I remember right it was stated that peta and the other wackos watch this sight so I think we can have a fair trial here at monster muley court. We just need 11 more jurors to weigh in and you can read the verdict.

sincerely, Gomer

Elkdude you dirty dog!;-)

Look at this mess you have me in! This subject is a virus and it has infected MM!

I guess we should all fabricate our hunting stories so not to offend the self-rightous in here. No one is perfect and we all make mistakes in the field. Have you ever got "buck fever"? Have you ever missed a shot, even slightly? Give me a break. I do agree that we shouldn't glorify questionable tactics.

Well, if he's guilty with all those antlers in the back of the truck I'm not sure would want to be innocent !

How can I go hunting with you guys next year ?
