KTC,
The subject of this thread is for you.
Here is a story and some pic's in the best order that I can give it to you from our 2005 Montana Combo Hunt.
We started this hunt out with no snow on Saturday afternoon and Cody picked out a bull up high on the mountain. First shot ( 300 WBY ) was just a little high and over the back at 370 yards, the second shot hit him on the move a little far back. The bull moved into a small patch of timber and did not come out. Cody and Steven went up the mountain to see if they could find the bull while I went back to camp to get a truck to haul out the elk. On the way back with the truck, we noticed an elk slowly crossing the road and standing just on the side of a small lake. The bull then went right into the lake and started smimming for the other side. I quickly pulled out my Bino's and saw that it was the bull that Cody had shot at. I jumped out of the truck and yelled up the mountain to Cody and Steve " Bull is in the Lake"....." Bull is in the Lake". You could start to see orange vests coming down the mountain fast! The bull continued to swim around the lake and would not come out....he was hurt and probably thought the water would feel better. This bull swam around this small lake for a couple of minutes before slowly walking up on shore where Cody put another shot into him.......guess what? He turned around and went back out into the lake and died. See Pic's
Oh crap...it was cold enough with-out going into the water. Well this bull floated on top of the water pretty well and we got smart! Throw a rope with a rock attached past the bull and pull him in. Here is the pic with the rope and rock, bull pulled up to shore and the final ending of Cody's bull. What an experience.
Greg shot a nice 20" four point muley on Sunday night that I do not have a picture for. It is shown in the group picture at the end of this long post.
On Monday morning it snowed almost 18" until late in the afternoon. We could not hunt until just before dark once the snow storm stopped. The whitetails were out in force and Richard picked this great buck off with his 300 WBY at 360 yards. Time to pack out another animal.
On Tuesday morning, Steve spotted this great 4 point muley almost 5 miles up the mountain in snow up to your waist in places due to the high winds in this area. After a long 4 hour hike and a few shots later, here is the well earned trophy.
On Wendsday morning we were finally able to locate two good bulls bedded on an opposing hillside in the snow. These bulls were 400 yards away. Richard and Steve both made great shots on these bulls.
Dicks Bull is 282". He was wearing orange when he was hunting, but he like's pictures without it. So much for you monstermuley POLICE!
Here is Steve's bull.
Just as Richard and Steve started shooting at their elk, ( Cody, Greg and myself...Alan...aka..Elkslayer ) were pushing another draw that we knew held both elk and deer. Cody was up high in the draw and we were able to push 30 deer and then 20 elk ( no branch antlered bulls ) up towards him. Cody made an unreal 490 yards ( 300 WSM ) off-hand shot on this great muley. When he showed me where the dead deer was at and from where he shot it from...I almost fell over. The shot was a great one and the deer pull would be even harded. Oh well, time for some more packing.
I decided enough was enough and it was time to go find a deer for me. On Wendsday night I spotted this good 4 point muley chasing some does up high on the mountain. After a good stalk and one shot from the 300 WSM, here is my buck.
We hunted Thursday morning and it was very slow. Greg had to return to work.
The pressure was now on me since I still had a bull tag to fill. I decided to go up high on Thursday night to see if something even though we had not spotted any elk coming out at night. Most elk we spotted were still out feeding in the mornings. We soon spotted a small heard of 10 cows with one branch antlered bull and made a stalk. The wind was blowing around 30mph, but at least you knew what way it was going. We had a hard time locating this mall herd, but kept hearing cow talk and a faint squeel once in a while. I soon spotted a few cows feeding 80 yards in front of us and we hid beside some small christmas trees along the side of this hill. The elk continued to slowly feed in front of us and into the wind. They kept coming and coming......soon we realized that this was no SMALL herd of elk. I counted over 90 cows and calfs with a few spikes and a few smaller 3 and 4 points. We soon figured out and could see that this herd was 250 strong. The bid herd bull was far back in the heard and was around 310". The elk continued to feed in front of me at 80 yards for 45 minutes while I had my 7MM on the shooting sticks and dialed to 14 power to make out the animals as they walked through the timber. It was getting very close to the close of shooting time and I had to keep dialing my scope down to collect good light. We soon noticed that the lead cow was starting to head up hill...oh crap! I told the guys that if she went another 10 feet that she would wind us. I was thinking that I was going to have to shoot a small 4 point up towards the lead cow, but this small 6 point was nice enough to walk out in front of me at 60 yards broadside. Put the 7MM with 162 Gr. Hornady Interlocks right through both shoulders. What a site to see 250 animals haul A_ _ and all the snow going 10 feet up in the air. It looked like snowmobiles taking-off. My bull went 20 yards, hit the snow on his face, got back up and went into the middle of 40 standing cows. Oh crap again, then the cows took off while the bull staggard a the end of the line.....one more shot through the lungs and SEE YA! The first shot had him, but it was sure fun to fire another with the new gun.
Here is my bull
Here are the deer pics
Here are the deer and elk ( DELK ) pics. Left to right: Steve, Alan, Richard, Greg and Cody
And here is the ride home and the end of a great hunt with the best of friends.
