Idaho Help

I'm hoping somebody can give me some insight on the better place /area to hunt in Idaho. I have the opportunity to either archery hunt in the Island Park or Beaverhead zones in archery season next year, or rifle hunt in the McCall zone close to Cascade Lake next year. I'm trying to figure out what my best opportunity would be to take a bull. I'm not going to be real picky because this might be my last chance to make it west. Any bull would do for me. Thanks for the help.

Be careful if you hunt in Island Park. There were alot of encounters with the grizzley this year. There are so many of them now that they have spilled out of Yellowstone and are frequently seen in Island Park. They are the at the head of the food chain---they are not #2.

elkantlers,

They must actually be #3 then. You would only rank #2 as our buddies at the Government level are #1...unless you actually have bear snot on your person.

I can only speak on the McCall zone, but I would rather archery hunt the unit instead of rifle hunt it.

man you got that right 300winnie.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-05 AT 11:29AM (MST)[p] Hey foss,,Cant tell you much about the Island Park or Beaverhead area.. all I can tell you is that if you are going to hunt the Cascade area then you will have to do your scouting. The wolves in this area have played havoc with the elk heards over the last few years, and the seccess rate for harvest with a rifle have dropped. I think your best shot in the cascade area would be around New Meadows in the Mud creek, Price Valley areas, maybe around Lost Lake. A few mile further to tavel but worth it I think. And while your at it why not go a few more miles for archery and head on up to Manns Creek, do your scouting here and you will do well.. Just some thoughts,,would hate for you to go home empty handed if this is your last Western hunt.......
Here is the one I took this year at no tellum ridge, in the up the creek without a paddle area,,Idaho of course..

idahotracker, beautiful bull. Thanks for all the help you guys have given. I have been lurking on this board for a long time and finally decided to post. I'm still undecided, as I have a good situation (I guess) to be in. I have a friend who has a cabin at Cascade Lake and he has invited me to hunt with him in the fall. He has been fairly successful in the past. I also have a friend whom I met through business years ago that would like me to come archery hunting w/ him. Being from PA my only scouting will be through phone calls, aerial photo's, etc. Both of my friends spend considerable amounts of time in the area's they hunt though. Thanks again. Foss
