Wyoming 67 or 38?

Any suggestions on why I should choose one of these units over the other? I am going to apply for a Type 9 tag and have narrowed it down to these 2 units.

A few facts about what I am looking for:

1. a place to hike in and hunt out of a DIY backpack camp (2-4 miles).
2. Non-wilderness (I am not a resident).
3. manageable pressure - especially no 4-wheelers!
4. a decent elk population - trophy size is not critical.

Can any of you comment on these 2 units?

thanks

You have 67 and 68 on that tag.

You only have 38 on that tag.

67 & 68 are Region 'E' deer tag units (different deer unit #) they don't open for rifle on Sept. 15th like many of the other rifle deer units.

Not much wilderness in any of the 3 units.... some private property issues in 68.....

Where ya coming from?? Flip a coin ..... fairly equal, maybe a few Grizzz in 67/68..

Thanks for replying

I am coming from S.Dakota.

I realized that 67 & 68 are combined, but I focused on 67 because it had a lot less roads and looked a lot rougher than 68. It appeared that there is some potential in the Shoshone N.F. - outside of the Washakie W.A. there in 67.

38 sounds good, but they give out a lot of tags (250) and it seems that there are roads everywhere. I want to be able to backpack in away from roads. That is why I am considering going further west.

The grizzly issue is a good thing to consider.

Hey guys, I'm new to this site as far as posting anything. I do alot of reading on here and learn plenty. I decided to reply to this post as I have archery hunted in area 38 for the past 14 years (that is when i can draw the tag). I actually live at the foot of the Big Horns. If you are looking at a back pack trip area 38 is not an area for that kind of trip, however you can find a few places in 38 where you could make that a possibility and that is where the bigger bulls roam. I don't know much about 68 but do know that is where the bears roam and definately would be a good back pack trip. I would say it is a 50/50 toss.

Thanks wyo_bulls.

I sent you an email asking about a specific area I am considering in unit 38. I basically studied my map and found the largest roadless area in the unit. It is steeper than most other areas, which probably explains the lack of roads. For all I know, though, there might be brand new jeep/atv trails cutting through there now.

Success rates and draw rates seem pretty similar between the 2 units, and neither has an early deer season. I guess I have to weigh dealing with grizzlies vs. dealing with 4-wheelers!

glacial21,

To be honest with you, the 4-wheelers aren't too much of a problem during archery season. I hunt off of a main road and I may see up to 6 different hunters during the whole month. I will be waiting for your mail, I'm sure I can help you out if you decide on 38.

There grizzlies and wolves all over area 67. Horse creek, Wiggins Fork, Dunor Valley, East Fork...you get my drift. I'd be a little worried hunting with a bow. Good-Luck

I've hunted 38 many times and it is getting worse. There are too many people up there that think they know how to archery hunt. You really can't get too far away from a road. There are a couple of places, but the best hunting seems to be within a couple of miles of the roads. I wish they would cut down the number of tags and make more archery only areas throughout the state to make people choose to hunt with a bow or a gun. I would probably choose 67 if you want to get away from some people and away from roads.

I agree - if you want a more 'wilder' hunt go for 67. The Bighorns are great country, but definitely more roaded.
