just wondering how many elk to years youve been hunting i dont want to hear bragging just thinking what the average is here on MM.MDB

Well I have been putting in for elk here in Arizona for 8 years and have managed to get 1 junior cow tag and I tagged an elk on that hunt. Up to 4 bonus points again and that is for cow elk jeeze I hate the draw.

Hunted elk four times. I have taken a 4X5 and a 5X5. These have all been public land, no guides, no help except a map. I think it is also more difficult when you are an out of stater. I'm from NY.

3 E/S tags in 8 years of trying. Killed 3 bulls. A smallish busted up 3x6, a 335ish gross 6x6 and a 350ish gross 6x6. It is hard drawing elk tags here, even in crappy units or trying for archery or Muzz.

4 elk hunts

1 guided - sucked, no elk
3 unguided, 3 bulls, one trophy, 2 bow one muzzleloader

Been 5 years total

Have hunted elk every year for 15 years. Mostly NM but when not drawn goto CO.

Have been drawn out of state twice.
Took a 6x6 the first year on an any elk tag.
Drew the same tag the following year and passed
on one small bull and four cows.

Funny thing is, I always got great pride in me being able to focus and not get buck fever when hunting. This past year on opening day, I heard a bugle one ridge over as the sun peeked over the horizon. It was "pretty" close.

My legs turned to jelly. Man, you gotta love it.

2 years hunting roosevelt elk = 2 bulls. I've bought elk tags probably 3-5 other years for trips when rocky mountain elk were open but I was focusing on other animals (deer/sheep). I've yet to take a rocky mountain elk, though. Maybe this year!

Hunted 2 times for elk. Archery in Montana w/ guide. No elk. Rifle hunt with my dad in Colorado on a D.I.Y. Hunt. Dad had a cow tag and filled that. Me, no elk.

Hunting elk since 2002. First year out I shot a 6x5 with a rifle. Subsequent years I have hunted with a bow. Some close encounters but nothing on the ground yet.

Have put in for elk in Arizona for 15 yrs. Two tags one bull. New mexico I have put in for 4 yrs. 1 tag no bull. Have 11 bonus points in Az for elk and hope it gets me that rut hunt I have been going after all these yrs.

HEY MOSSBACK, YOU HAVE TO FEEL YOUR A BIGTIME PLAYER WITH 11 POINTS. I DONT THINK YOU CAN GO MUCH LONGER WITHOUT GETTING A TAG, I'LL PULL FOR YA. I HAVE 8 POINTS AND I FEEL IT COULD HAPPEN ANYTIME FOR ME. I KNOW A GUY THAT KILLED A 400+ BULL WITH 4 POINTS, SO YOU NEVER KNOW. LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES, TAKE ER EASY- YD.

hunted elk for three years and finally got one this year a 6x6
should have got one my first year but it didn't happen

21+ years of hunting or buying tags in 6 states = 2 elk harvested 1 spike in WY, 1 cow in UT. Was close a few other times over the years particularly during archery but couldn't git it done, been a lot of fun though and plan to keep trying.

I didn't start big game hunting until I was 28, my family were not hunters. I did hunt a lot of birds, mostly geese, just not big game. I'm 46 now and have 3 bulls and 9 cows to show for it. One bull with a bow.

I have hunted elk 12 out of the past 20 years. Skipped a few in between. So far, 6 cows and 8 bulls (1 spike and the rest 5x5 on up to 6x7). All archery and all from Washington and NW Oregon.

I started hunting elk too young to kill one,(following dad) but when I was 13 I took a cow, my first elk. I still remember thinking, man, this is way bigger than a deer. What the heck am I going to do? I killed one every year from then on till I was 19. Then I left Montana. No elks killed in Nevada, my new home.(damn the draw odds) Been back home now in Montana and have killed a few more. I guess my total is 14 elk with 1 decent six point. mtmuley

Been hunting elk here in az for 16 years. Have drawn 2 archery bull tags and one archery cow tag. Have 1 bull 1 cow. I hate the draw. My wife has been hunting elk 4 years and has had 2 cow tags and one trophy bull tag, all archery. This year was her first kill on a 300 class bull.

I've hunter Colorado GMU's 12 & 24 Twice, both unguided. The first time was second season Rifle and we were snowed out (no elk). The second time first season Rifle. (no elk). I'm learning the pressure is too much in these units as well as alot of other colorado GMU's. I've been saving my preference points and in the future I'll apply for more of a trophy unit. I'm undecided weather I'll go Archery or Muzzleloader.

One cow elk in 20 years of archery hunting. 0 for 20 in the draws over that time. One of these years it'll work out for me.

Cheers,
Pete

I'm 31 yrs. old. Shot my first cow in 1988 as an 8th grader. So in the last 17 years it's 13 bulls and 2 cows.

I am in Az... put in for 12 years 1 tag.... no elk ( ... and most of those years had cow hunts second choice and still did not draw

Ive been hunting CO for 16 years.12 elk to date. In fact this is the first year in 12 I have had tag stew.

I think: 12 years (just one state), got one every year I've drawn (9 or 10) - worse luck when I had to hunt the General areas when I didn't draw. No big trophies

LAST EDITED ON Dec-23-05 AT 01:22PM (MST)[p]I am 1 for 1. World class 3x4 raghorn at near point blank range in the timber. Proud of him though as I hunted hard until the last day of season for it, being my first elk, and it was only one of a small number of bulls taken in that particular unit and season. Bittersweet though, as immidiately after shooting him I noticed the big 6x6 I was chasing that he was with, staring back down the hill at me broadside at pot-shot distance. Oh well, thems' the breaks. Count me in back in CO for muzz season sometime soon though.

PM or email me if you need any elk hunting advice. I am your elk expert!!! ;)

I've been hunting elk for 26 years. Most years I hunt more than one state. I've killed too many elk to count. I think I average about 1 bull and 1 cow per year. The total should be around 50 now.

The first animal I field dressed by myself was a full grown cow. I was 14. We hunted around Gardiner, Montana and were meat hunters so I killed another cow and two calves before I got my first bull, a four point. In my late twenties I moved to Washington and got two bulls through the special drawings, a three point and a spike. In thirty years of buying elk tags in Montana and Washington I've gotten eight elk. When I picked my name for MM I choose hunterofelk and not killerofelk. More realistic.

I got serious about elk hunting at age 18 and I'm now 37. I've killed 6-6 point bulls one 330 bull/bow, 1-five point, 1-4 point, 3-spikes and 5 cows. I hunt multiple states; Idaho,Washington,Oregon. I put in for AZ,UT,CO,NM,WY but have never drawn. I bowhunt, muzzle and rifle public land over the counter. I've drawn 1 good tag in WA and 2 in OR.

Rifle hunted in WA state 10 years 9 Elk. Bow hunted in Oregon 3 Years 2 Bulls. Good Luck

I've been lucky on the draw. 7 archery bull tags in Arizona only two nice bulls and lots of close calls. 300 and 348. One smallish 4x5 in New Mexico with rifle. Been putting in the draw in Arizona since 1988.

19 years,
10 bulls + 2 cows = 12 elk
5 taken with archery, 7 rifle, all killed in Idaho, no big trophys yet, the biggest bull so far is a nice 6x6 with my bow in 1998. To be big for me it has to be at least a honest 350 class or bigger.

19 Years huntin Wapiti and 13 Elk, all in Colorado on Public Land except this year, I hunted RFW on private land. 1-Bow Kill and the rest with a rifle. Biggest bull 270-280, 6 point. I'm planning on getting serious about hunting in the next few years and start applying out of state and go for some Monsters like you guys get.

I've killed 2 cows, 1-1x1, 1-1x2, 1-2x2 in about 8 years hunting a crappy area. I've never drawn a 'good' tag.

Got my first bull tag in 2005, went on my first ever elk hunt and got my first elk, DIY. He was about a 310" bull. Boy was it ever fun. fatrooster.

Been drawn or hunted public land 5 years....
2 Bulls with Rifle (300 class 6x6's), 1 Bull with bow 4x5, and 1 Cow with rifle. Try to go every other year and it is very addicting. Nothing like hearing the bugle of an elk at the crack of dawn on the mountain top - definately gets my blood pumping.

I have been on 13 DIY elk hunts, all public land in CO, SD, and NM.

3 for 3 with rifle - all bulls - largest scores 300
4 for 10 with archery - all bulls - largest scores 270

Hunted 29 years in Idaho, and 2 general tags in Wyoming. Shot 8 bulls, and 14 cows. I see them steaks on the hoof and just start to tremble! Hunt elk for the plate, trophy hunt for deer.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-01-06 AT 03:56AM (MST)[p]I've hunted elk about 25 years now missing only about 2 yrs. due to commitments in the usmc.I've taken 9 elk, all in the state of Washington.I shot my biggest bull this year and hopefully I'll draw another permit soon.Regardless if I draw or not,I believe any elk is a good elk!

I have hunted elk in Idaho since 1980-25 years! wow!
Only missed 3 years to work and 4 years I got skunked.
That's 22 years and 18 elk. Mostly cows and spikes with a couple nice bulls here and there.

14 years in Utah, 0 bulls, 4 cows with land owner tags while they were destroying our corn fields.

12 years of Utah general season and have got 4 bulls, all small. Although, one was a very weird two year old non-typical 4x5. Also I have see a bull every year I have hunted elk, just sometimes in the wrong spot or just out of range. I walked away from a 350 class bull this year to go to a family wedding. To this day I wonder if I made the right decision.

Hunted since 73 missed a couple years. Killed some let some live. Some near killed me. Drawn a couple Limited tags. Hiked a gazillion miles. Guided and unguided mostly public DIY. All over gods creation even Idaho. If I could do them all over agin with out killing one I would. You can not deduct elk hunting from your life. A good woman is the only thing that compares to a good elk hunt or MD hunt.
Three of the finer things in life. Hunting Elk, Killing Elk, And letting Elk live. I have killed more then my share. And to share my kill I did.

Hunted elk 9 years, killed 4 bulls. Our little group is about 50% over the years. Still looking for that wall hanger.
