Arizona Elk Survey

Just filled it out. I expressed my opinion on why they should leave as is. It's all about the rut...any other time of year whether it be august or November is a waste.

I just completed the survey also.Archery is tough enough leave the seasons the way they are now.I am not going to put in for a November hunt with my bow.I along with many, many others have to much money invested in points to just throw it all away now.But I did get thinking about that late hunt in November if it is anything like Utahs was with a rifle in 2005 it could turn out to be a slaughter even with a bow?

Me too, leave the dang thing like it is. I was fortunate enough to draw a tag last year and I'll wait my turn for another.

"LIKEWISE",last tag drawn was in 97,with 6 B.P. I'll wait !!! Az Comm and G&F,don't Screw this Great hunt season up ---

why have the bow hunters hunt the prime time on all the best units...the success rates are better than the rifle hunts..
better than most hunts anywhere..I know I will get slammed
but oh well...slam me...the best draw odds, the best units, the
best bulls....what more do you want...they should balance the hunts and the opprotunity to hunt the quality areas in the prime time....give me the tag and let me HUNT...if you want a
sure thing spend your money a high fence ranch...

treedagain,
I'll be the first to slam you.

" why have the bow hunters hunt the prime time on all the best units...the success rates are better than the rifle hunts.."

First, your facts are wrong. The rifle hunts done in the same time frame as the archery hunts (rut) have an average of 90% success rate. The bow hunts probably average around 40% success.

"I know I will get slammed
but oh well...slam me...the best draw odds, the best units, the
best bulls....what more do you want...they should balance the hunts and the opprotunity to hunt the quality areas in the prime time"

How do you propose they balance the hunts in "prime time" when the rifle and muzzleloader guys have succes that's much better than the stick and string guys? If you take archery tags away and give them to the other guys, then there will be even less tags.

"give me the tag and let me HUNT"
So forget everybody else, it's all about you right?

"...if you want a
sure thing spend your money a high fence ranch..."

Your biggest mistake is believing that bowhunters have better draw odds than rifle hunters. Look very closely at the stats and you will see that the differences are trivial at best. In fact I could draw a late rifel hunt in unit 10 before I could draw an archery hunt in the same unit.

The G&F is trying to reqruit more hunters by offering more elk tags. In AZ we can hunt deer statewide with an over the counter tag, javelina and turkey tags are easy to come by, Mtn lions are year round with not quotas, fall bear tags are over the counter, predator hunting and small game is open year round. If someone complains about lack of oppurtunity then they need more help than an elk tag can offer!

I put mine in to stay the same as it is now. Plus made a few other comments about price increases. Oh well, maybe if enough of us complain maybe they will chancge it. We will see!!!!

treedagain, Have you ever archery hunted? If you have great but if you have not, I think you'll find that it's not exactly the picnic you think it is. First of all firearms hunters kill far more elk than archery hunters ever have. As stated on another post Firearms success rates in the early hunts and some late hunts are much better than the archers PERIOD and the draw odds are about the same. So while I can see your point in some ways we really have far less impact on the resource in the harvest department. Couple that with around 3 times more permits for firearms hunters and maybe you'll start to see the picture a little more clearly. Archery opportunities are more restrictive than firearms opportunities by design so don't pick on us for wanting to keep our numbers at the current levels. If they were reducing rifle numbers and offering you more tags to hunt in December I doubt you'd stand for that as well.

Aztrophyhunter,
I was just joking about that late hunt being a slaughter even with a bow like Utahs late rifle hunt was.
I say leave the seasons alone I have to many years in now to have the seasons changed and make it even harder to draw the archery rut hunts.Raise the price if they need more funds which I dont like but if they need to make more money dont give more tags just charge more for the tags and leave the archery hunts alone.

AZtrophyhunter, No I'm not related but I could be adopted very easily by Mr. Dan Agnew, if it will get me in on some of those top quality hunts he goes on! He has quite a history of getting some hard to draw tags and hunting on the RES. He's obviously a very accomplished hunter that has some fine animals to his credit.
