OTC Elk Tags in Utah

Can a nonres. go to Utah and purchase an archery elk tag for the general archery hunt over the counter? Are the tags avaialabe right up until the hunt?

Yes. They will even sell you a tag after the hunt starts. You just have to follow the Spike Only, Any Bull, Closed areas (Limited Entry) regulations.

I was thinking about this myself if I can't pull a tag anywhere this year. Why are they so liberal with the spike tags?

I'm a "Utahn" and this is just my opinion-

They manage elk in this state for trophy bulls. Utah has produced more B&C bulls since 2000 than any other state. With that in mind, they let you chase spikes in some of the LE units. They figure a spike here and there won't kill the trophy concept. Next, the general areas can be very rough. Don't get my wrong, I hunt them myself, but I'm not paying that Non-Res fees for limited opportunities. IMO, if you are looking for some Western Elk hunting I would look at Colo and/or Idaho, especially for OTC archery elk opportunities.

I live in Utah, but goto Idaho/Wyoming every year to hunt elk.
