I have a ranch to hunt on in unit 411, but i have never hunted Montana before. Do i need to put in for this tag? Does it make a difference if you put in for deer and elk together? I am obviously a non-resident, If any of you can help me out I sure would appreciate it. Is this a good unit? Thanks bowhuntinnut

Why not check into a Landowner Sponsorship tag? A bit cheaper and you are restricted to hunt only on the property owners land, other than that it the full monty, Big Game Combo for you my friend.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-06 AT 10:07PM (MST)[p]I have a friend with a ranch in 411. What general area is it in. The elk seem to reside in various parts so the whole area isn't necessarily great elk stuff. Send me an email [email protected] Thanks Bart

Can't give you much info on the quality of hunting there but I can tell you that you will have approx a 60% chance of drawing the big game combo for deer and elk. You will be slightly less than that applying for just the elk combo. Good luck with the other info on the unit itself. Hope that helps a bit. One thing is for certain, if you have a private ranch to hunt, chances are the hunting should be good as long as there are elk in that general area.

After drawing a elk license, you have a elk permit draw to look forward to. HD 411 is either sex by drawing only, and the odds are pretty bad for a non-resident(about 1 in 42 not counting points). Factor in the points system, and Id guess it would be more like 1 in 100. There are some antlerless permits you could apply for with better odds, but im assuming you want a nice bull. That said, If you draw an elk combo tag I could surely point you in the right direction for a great public land archery elk hunt.

ismith, Do you hunt this area during archery? Just curious how good it is hunting public access. Send me an email if you'd rather it not be posted.

Hey thanks guys for the info. From what i gather a nonresident needs to put in for the draw and i have about a 60% chance of drawing without a point. Anything else i need to know?

Bozeman,
I do not hunt 411, as I have some awesome elk hunting right out in my back yard. I have been applying for the breaks for a few years now, and to get an either sex permit in most of those HD's now has the same odds as drawing a either sex sheep permit. So hopefully Ill finally get that coveted breaks elk permit this year, but if I dont Ill be hunting elk close to home.

bowhuntinnut,
I dont think you fully understood what I was trying to tell you. Yes you have about a 60% chance of drawing a NR elk license, but your odds of drawing a permit for HD 411, which is required to bow or rifle hunt in that HD, really really stink.
