Shed hunting begins on Sunday. Anyone else running up to hike around?
How many of the biggest antlers do you think have already been picked?

The wife and I are going to go hike around for a couple of days. We thought about going to Jackson to look for elk antlers up there, but no, just go look for deer.

Well labarge and big piney all the good ones are gone. They're all poached I can guarantee that.I doubt the antlers get abducted by aliens every year.Wyoming just needs to drop the law they cant police it its a worthless law.

A couple guys is all... I wonder how many people have not been busted? 50, 100... maybe even more??? What do you think? It would be nice if they posted the amount of people caught each year just to see the numbers.
In other words, Yes I will be there Sunday. ha ha

A buddy of mine found a monster set about 2 months ago right off the road. He basically buried them with snow and vegetation including sage brush. He's been back several times to bury them even further. I don't know if there are squirrels in region G, but I'm expecting a phone call Sunday. Is that legal?

Ok Jake, you talked me into staying home. Just curious, from your stand point as a resident, who has seen the majority of the better bucks on the range, do think those better bucks will be picked up the day of, and shown around, or are they gone and will only be seen by select close friends? For example, what are the odds of any of us here on MM, ever seeing picture of sheds off those 230+ bucks.

Bring your snow boots and don't plan on finding much! there has been a million people walking and pounding the brush on bikes. Then you have a million people just out walking around and have no clue they are on private ground. be sure to know where you are I've heard they are going to get serious about trespassing the next couple weeks! In wy nothing has to be posted its all on you to know where you are!

I will stick with turkey hunting. At least they are not all poached!

Sadly the areas where I coyote hunt we are already pounded by ATV tracks over 2 weeks ago!

+1 elks69 I might go look for some turkeys as well.
Sad thing is the horns are getting poached at night with oil field
trucks parking at a pump like they are doing work and then walking the hills with flashlights. The horns have been gone for over a month.

YBO- Pretty sure your buddy could get cited for that. He should've just taken them. That's what all those oil field hands do. In fact, I talked to one of them in January. He had no qualms about admitting to me that he grabs them up whenever he sees one. He went on to say that he even told the game warden the same thing. WTF??? I'm pretty sure WGFD has night vision optics. They would only have to make an example once or twice. Word would spread fast amongst those guys.

Shouldn't all you good Utah Mormons be in church Sunday??? :)

Not really a big deal it's a $250 ticket payable right there on the spot! no need to even go see a judge you can pay the fish cop who stops you. I know of several guys that have no worries and keep the $250 in there front pocket and go hiking.

I've read of a few being busted....but not as many that get away with it...I've definitely lost interest since no other bordering states have seasons and now the out of staters come blowing in for the opener here..we don't find as many as we used too...
As for 230 sheds come to the LaBarge Mule Deer fest on the 14th May.....

I spend quite a bit of time on a couple of wyoming's winter ranges every year and I have only seen a 3 bucks that are in that 230 super buck
class since I started going in 2009.
I think a few big bucks (180+) are picked up early each year. I also know a few will be found on the opener.

I always hope to find something big but I usually find a lot of boot tracks and very few sheds.

This past winter I haven't posted very many of the photos I have taken. I think Wyoming's winter ranges get enough publicity without my help.

I make May 1st a family event. We go and have a good time. If I see boot tracks I walk on the other side of the Bush. I hope the shed season is benefitting the deer but I really hate waiting until May 1st.
As to weather we get to see the sheds who knows, I know guys who never post anything they find on May first or any other day.

I'll be there. There's always people that pick them up early and most of the big bucks are usually picked up. However, there's always someone that snags a big white set or a one of the big boys. To me, it's always worth the hike to try and find some sheds. Nobody can find ALL of them.

Ya, for sure Jake, there are lots of guys that don't show their stuff. The 230 buck was just an example, as I have never seen one that big up there. But we watch bucks like DP, old man, TNT, etc, and never get to see the sheds or pics of them. I myself, love celebrating a great find by letting others see my finds. Of all the big bucks filmed last year, I only got to see 1 single and 1 set. I, like others, just like to see sheds.

I'll start packing some cash with me when I go videoing/ picture taking from now on! Thanks for the info, Hornkiller! I know of several sets that are worth more than $250. That's cheaper than a NR deer tag!!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-30-16 AT 02:46PM (MST)[p]According to the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission regulation, ?collection? is defined as: to search for, locate, stockpile, or possess shed antlers and horns of big game animals on public land or attempt to search for, locate, stockpile, or possess shed antlers and horns of big game animals on public land.

The authority to promulgate rules and regulation was almost overturned last year by the legislature because the G&F is looking to expand shed seasons statewide, which breaks their promise of wanted authority in western Wyo only. Residents are fighting any new expansion of shed seasons and attempting to overturn the current statute allowing them in Wyoming.

Stay tuned and get involved.

We arrived up here a few hours ago and antlers were everywhere laying out in brush. Big tines darting from the dirt. Unbelievable! Truly, unbelievable!!!

We're hoping for luck tomorrow. Might get real wet. Even if we find nothing, it's better than sitting at home. I noticed a little fat above the belt, maybe I can burn that off. The wife is sure excited. Funny....a hot chick excited to walk around in sagebrush all day looking for bones.

The Game & Fish is undermanned for the laws they have to enforce and thats for sure. But I will say they have really stepped up their game this year in my area and cited quite a few people and seized some good bone in high profile areas that you will probably never hear about with some of that being on private. You would think they would make news of their citations but why would they. The law has been in place for some time now so most everyone that lives in the area and anyone who comes here to shed hunt knows whats going on. So any airhead thats caught packing gets cited = easy money. Keep it quiet and make people think they aren't enforcing the law, sly but effective. They are out there and ya they can't catch everyone but they do get more than you will hear about. $250 fine? Don't know if there are different levels to the fines they give out but $500 & loss of hunting privelages is what I've heard for a couple plus take whatever sheds your packing with no chance of getting them back. As far as hunting private sections before the first goes, well you better have permission from the land owner or lease holder. Does not matter if its an oil company, railroad or anybody body else you have to have permission. That goes all year round so maybe Keep that in mind for tomorrow.

I saw 2, possibly 3, game offers driving up here. I imagine they're watching close all winter, especially where the best bucks are hanging out. I think between law enforcement and honest guys out on the winter range looking at bucks, someone would have to have a lot of guts to be picking antlers up illegally.

The fine is $250 that is it no other penalties! Hiked about 15 miles today in 4 different locations. there is 2-4 week old boot tracks bike tracks everywhere we went! Game and fish don't care around my area.

Hornkiller, how did you do? Send pics. My buddy dd pick that set up and he said it only scored 229"s. ONLY! What a dipstick.

If he sends a pic and gives permission, I definately will. Thanks for asking.

It's been pretty good. I'll share pics when home as they're on my point and shot. We found about 18 that we kept today between two of us. Two pretty darn good ones. Other people have found better antlers. Guy at the motel here grabbed one side of a double dropper with fun stuff. Another guy grab a massive sucker with big backs.
Our evening hike sucked big time though.

I can't complain about our day 1 finds.

Ain't no place to eat. Everything is closed today.

LAST EDITED ON May-03-16 AT 03:41PM (MST)[p]I was out there... Spot we went had several other folks out and about. We all kept to our own little spots.

The biggest ones I found (no giants), I almost stepped on. They were pretty well camouflaged. "Shed Poachers" can't get them all. I'd like to think that I saw more people with sheds this year, as a testament that the good people of WY respected the law. We saw 50 or 60 deer as well in the area. That was surprising as last year we didn't see a single one.

It was a good time. Hotel room in Kemmerer and 8.5 miles on the boots in about 6-7 hours of hiking. Just a fun day out, despite the cold, windy morning. I can't wait til my kids are a couple years older and can accompany me. It truly is a real-life treasure hunt. :)

Not the best pic, my ugly old face with a handfull of antlers, shed rate of 1per/hr for a total of 7 whites. Lots of people out on Monday. Was a fun hike, saw lots of deer, antelope, birds. Never know what you are going to find.
8178jwsheds.jpg

In my first hour of walking around, I found 5 little sheds (spikes and twos). I figured it was going to be a day where I was only going to find little stuff. I ended up finding 6 more sheds though. So, while I found about 2 per hour, the first hour was heavy on the little ones.
