I finally got around to finishing my pedastal. I need a little help from you guys though. I glued dirt to the top of my pedastal and I'm wondering what I can spray on it to seal the dirt so that it doesn't continue to make a mess. Also wondering what I could do to the sagebrush to preserve it. Any help would be appreciated!

Can't give you any advice on the dirt and sage but...
WOW! What a beautiful mount and a fantastic bull!!

Sorry, I can't answer your question either, but I really like the idea of using a stump for a base. Nice looking pedestal. I've got an elk from last fall that I've been trying to decide how to do. That might just be it.

Maybe instead of dirt you could use moss. I think you are just showing off a great bull mount. It worked! That is INCREDIBLE!

you may try spraying it with some fish sealer but i've never tried it. I sure someone on taxidermy.net could answer your question though

That is absolutely gorgeous. The sage should dry up fine. Since it's wood, you can use it straight up. Might spray a clear coat over it.

I would think that some of the mortar sealer you can pick up at home depot would work. I have used that on some loose mortar around my fireplace and it seems to hold it together pretty well. Not sure how it would do on dirt.

Nice Bull Too!

That thing is gonna look terrible in your house! I will come and haul it off for you, and give you a discount on dump fees cuz your an MM menber (meanwhile, all my firends and neighbors wonder "when did Tony shoot that")

That is an incredible bull, and mount, thank's for sharing it with us!

That looks awsome. Whats the store on the bull?

Do you know how high that mount is? I only have 8' ceilings (sp?) and if I ever kill a big bull I need some ideas on how to mount it. Some kind of pedastal mount might be the way to go.

I have used deluted regular elmers glue many times. Tape off where you don't want the glue to go. Delute the elmers wood glue down until it will just barely spray though a normal spray bottle. Spray on some of the liquid and sprinkle down some dirt. Let it dry for a few minutes or until it starts to clear. Repeat process until it looks like you want. Also works great with pine needles, leaves, small sticks, small rocks, whatever you choose. It goes on a little milky and will freak you out at first so try it on just a board until you prefect your teachnique. I have some mounts that are 10 to 15 years old that I have repeated the application on to keep them fresh.

I would just use a can of clear spray paint no certain brand cheapist is fine. Dump excess dirt off blow off dust and spray a coat on. If the sage brush is dry spray a pretty heavy coat all over it the clear spray paint helps to seal and hold everything together. If the green color dries out of it you can get a coloring for flowers an plants and spray it on .I'v been doing taxidermy for 20 years. I'm surley not claiming to be an expert but ,I would try that. the paint may make the dirt a little darker. That is a very nice looking mount awsome rack. Good luck!

you can use krylon non yellowing clear satin acrylic. you can also use fungical sealer. I just used epo clear coat on a antelope and it did a great job. these are all available at www.taxidermy.com Just make sure you don't use varnish because it has a yellow organge tint into and will yellow over time, i learned that the hard wat on my skulls.

Thanks for all the help guys. One of you mentioned moss on top instead of dirt. I went and picked some up today and it looks alot better.

Zigga he scores 365". His fronts hurt him. Only a 36" spread too. Wish he would have had bigger than 8 and 9 inch thirds. Can't complain though for my first real trophy with a stick. I killed him two years ago and still relive that day at least three times a week. He was the biggest bull taken off the unit on the archery hunt and second over all through out the other seasons. My buddy killed a 380 on the rifle hunt a couple of weeks later on the same unit that beat him by a bit.

He's got incredible tops and I thought the bottom would hurt him way more. Very impressive bull and mount. Congrats with the bow.

Hey i worked at a taxidermy for a while and can i say that that is an awesome cape and what a mount. very well done if i do say so my self. One thing abou the sage.....i'm not sure but i hear if you freeze dry it, it will be better than nothing...just an idea, no experience though. Cool mount still.

Great mount. Great bull. Does anyone make a wall-pedistal form for elk? I had my daughters trophy whitetail done on a wall-pedistal form and decided it is the best looking form around, (IMHO).

smoktem,
Sage dries ok, but in about a year the leaves will loose there color and become very brittle, it they get touched at all they will fall off. Try to seal the sage leaves with some kind of matte finish sealer. I have tried to preserve sage many times and ways without much success. I found some fake sage leaves that I hot glued to sage stems and it works excellent, as for the dirt... mix dirt with elmers gule and spread it over the surface of your pedestal, then sprinkle the top with dry dirt and blow off any excess, and stick a few grass bunches on top of there along with a few rocks. Great looking elk mount.

Man, that is outstanding...nice elk and beautiful tribute to the hunt and the animal.

Smoktem,

I can't get enough of that mount. The tops are incredible and the mount is breathtaking! Nice work!

Smokten,
As far as the dirt goes,
a litle bit of concrete with some die added to make the colorcontrasts of dirt, would of worked great.
Your work i breattaking.
you took me back to a bull I had a couple years back peek his head out between some pines at about 12 yards.
i think thats the bull and you caught him at that moment
with your supperb art work.

My goal in life is to be more positive guys.
Good luck with all your hunting and other obsticals in life.
Unfortunatly it isn't going to help my spelling.
