New Mexico - Unit 18

Anyone ever hunted New Mexico Unit 18 for Elk? I heard that it was mostly comprised of desert i.e. Cactus etc.

Wow , after reading your post I had to go look at a proclamtion just to see if there was even a hunt in 18 for elk .Maybe on the very southern portion , next to 36 and 37 , but I couldn't tell you for sure . Call the G&F at the Roswell office , 505-624-6135 , get the warden who works that area and pick their brain .....Good luck ...NM

i hear there are elk up on chupadera mesa...can't say i've seen one since i've never been up there...i drive on the south end of 18 on my way toward carrizozo and there is some p/j...hell, bet there's even elk in the desert nowadays...

david, might also consider calling the wardens in socorro and carrizozo as they would be the closest patrols in that area...see what they have to say

There was a heard of elk south of 18 in the desert off of the Fite ranch an White Sands, had a 390 - 400 class bull with the herd! thought i was hearing things until i seen them!and maybe the elk on Bernardo may have spread? Or maybe they are going to let some people hunt the Bernardo herd? 18 is only listed as a Archery hunt
