NM UNIT 13 OR 17

Unit 17 is your best bet for access and opportunity. I met some 13 hunters last year that were having a real tough hunt. Talked to some 17 hunters in the field and they were doing pretty good at opportunities on 300 class bulls, but were looking for something special. We hunted 16E and had a great hunt. Might consider that one too.... Good luck on the draw.

More elk , easier access if you don't know either area 17 will be a bit easier to find elk , just go to the mtn , where as all of 13 is elk country but they are scattered . 13 is a good unit , but if you can scout it or hire a quality guide , other wise be prepaired to to lots of miles for little and possibly no elk siting , where as 17 has just a certain area , the San Mateos , elk on both sides , its good elk unit.

I agree that the elk are scattered in 13. But there are more elk there now than ever before. Access is the problem in 13. 17 by far is the way to go. Some real big bulls in those hills. There are elk all over that unit. Last year we were glassing elk coming out of the creosote flats! In the summer! Most of the elk are in "traditional" habitat, but don't over look the "desert" stuff. There could be a whopper hiding there. A friend of mine drew the second bow hunt last year and had a blast. It was a tough hunt, 85 degrees, full moon, but the bulls were hot. He killed a 350 bull that was fighting with a 330 bull. He said that he saw more elk in 17 than ever before. He had hunted 17 in the early 90's. Good luck with the draw, steep odds.
