I curently have 14 NR PP and am going to hold out for area 2 archery. However, I have never hunted the area so my partner and I are thinking of drawing a couple of cow tags in the area so we can hunt it and learn the area. I intend to bow hunt and my buddy will gun hunt. What season is best or does it matter for cows. Thanks in advance for the input.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-28-06 AT 10:59PM (MST)[p]The first season after the bull season will give you the most info if you are planning for the rifle hunt. Things could change by the 3rd or fourth season and then you're scouting wouldn't give you good info for the 10/1 bull hunt. I had this plan for several years myself, just haven't done it yet. I don't have the regs in front of me now but if memory serves me, the only unit 2 cow hunt that was undersubscribed was 3rd season. Look for an asterik in the regs. I'm debating if I should apply for 2nd rifle, buck, myself because i think I have the points to draw and it would be right after the bull season AND I think that hunt will go to a 80/20 split for deer in the next year or two. Good Luck

Everyone with 14 points should apply for a 2 point unit just so they can hunt this year and keep 12 points. come on, I need the help.

Sorry. I didn't read your post very well. I didn't see that you are after the archery hunt. The earlier you hunt cows will still give you the most info. Don't put in for the 2 point unit, I'm after the rifle hunt. 2012 I think.

I am not so much worried about where the bulls are when I scout. I am mostly interested in the lay of the land. If the cows are there I am sure the bulls will be also. Its my understanding that area 2 has a resident herd and there is not much migration there. Is that true. I am sticking with my plan to hunt area 2 one day even if it takes another 5 years. I do have 6 PP for deer and thought of trying for a buck tag but decided against it.

There is a resident elk herd. I spent a week there three years ago when my Wife drew a Antelope buck tag. Shooting a Cow would be easy, two years ago I attempted to draw a rifle cow tag with no points and didn't. Your results may vary.

Tracker,

We are in the same situation I alos have 14 Elk Pref pointsand 6 deer pref points and am thinking about unit 2. I also had given some thought to appling for a cow tag in that area to get familar with the area.

If you hunt that area where do you stay or do you camp?

I would like to keep in touch maybe we can help each other out.

I do not think there is any place in the area to stay at. We are going to camp. If we are lucky enought to draw and hunt the area I pass on info.

If you get a cow tag, I would think it would be a rifle tag.

Archery tags are either sex and require quite a few points. Although in some areas you can get that "additional" archery cow tag, I hope it is not valid in unit 2 during archery season. The last thing I would want after spending a ton of points on a either sex tag is a bunch of cow hunters running around. The hunt is supposed to be low hunter density.

I did hear of a fellow who drew a couple years ago and indicated there was a bunch of "game damage" cow hunters running around where they shouldn't have been. After spending 12 points, he was upset to see this happening.

That said, you can pull a cow rifle tag and use archery tackle as long as you wear orange.

Good Luck.

Well my partner and I put in for 2 1st choice which will get me a point and 2nd and 3rd choice for cow. I pan on using my bow during the hunt if we draw.
