Lets see,
just did a quick count and it appears as though the countdown for my elk hunt in on the bottom side of the year.
Only 24 weeks. Colorado Muzzy season,
3 points, should be a shoe-in.

How about you others.
Lets hear from you.

See if we can stirr up a little excitement,
ya it may be early fore some of you, but belive me i started thinking about my next years hunt, the day I returned.
Right now there is plenty of hunts to watch on TV.
with lots of good tips.
Been kicking about ideas on where i'm going to set up camp.
which tent to set where.
taking a new guy out there with me.
We've applied for the last 3 years for this hunt and feel it"s a good chance at a draw.
We hunt and fish together but he's never chased elk.
This will be his first.

Four wheelers or horses.
i would like to horse it around but
I dont have any to take out.
and renting them is kindda pricy on a pinched budget.
any of you have any horses to loan/cheep rent?

do i set up a base camp, and
Go deep or just hunt the front couple miles.
Weather to make a scouting trip out there 3 weeks before or just wing it.
ive hunted this area for the last 4 years.
I would like to try the back side of this area, which i've never been into.
From what i have seen on the DOW maps the back side holds caving and a summer heard.
can you guys tell me, do they move when fall starts?

lets see if we can get to gether and use this as a
count down post.
I know there are many out there who are like myself.
I've already lost it.
Elk ELLK eleleleleeleK,

Thanks Jim

25 weeks until opening archery here in wyoming,,,until than im shooting my bow and watching a lot of elk hunting videos and searching for there sheds..since this is my last year of highschool im moving to the other side of the mountain so every friday night im driving a whole 3 hours to home to go with my dad than hunt until sunday than drive back over the mountain for my job and schooling.and i will be taking horses.

THE NORTH FORK HUNTER

Waiting for the draw to get over with torments me every year. Now this year Im doing a few raffles so its even worse. Hopefully Ill draw something good this year. I do get to go spring bear hunting though, so that will help ease the withdrawls.
Irl

Waiting on draws. Only guarentee is Co, first rifle. Son has 2 points which gets him a es tag and I put in for a cow after PP.

Think I have a legitimate chance at Ore. elk (6 pts) but haven't decided to do it this year or not. Son has 5 PP for deer in Ore and its his last year to apply for the late season, youth deer hunt. Nv. deer has been good to me the last 2 years so I can hope i draw that again. Nv antelope is a possibility w/4 pts. Get to put in for Id again after waiting my 1 year after drawing elk. I'm not even going to mention the 15 or so other long shots that could come through. Really hoping 6 pts in Co get the late deer hunt I want but i can't be so lucky. no tags means i'll have to take my frustration out on the chukar.

Wherever I go for elk or wilderness deer, my 4 legged friends will be with.

This is my first year to have put in on any public draws. I put in on CO elk and deer and NM elk and deer. The suspense is killing me and I only put in and finalized everything 3 days ago!

22 WEEKS,
Outch that hurts. just had major shoulder surgery 7 days ago.
I had a few choises
1. give up spring turkey hunt.
2. eliminate my fly in trip (fishing) in canada.
3. screw up my elk hunting trip which is already payed for.
no brainer give up turkey.

22 weeks and counting.

20 WEEKS,
5 weeks until i know if i even got drawn.
Sitting on my deck last night watching the turkeys out in the back 50, gong to miss knot shooting one of them this year.
Shrooms should be starting to pop up here soon,
along with the wild asparagus.
weather has been real conducive for them, only thing is the daylight hours might not be long enough yet.
should be a great year,
hunting presure should be cut way back with the gas going to be around $5.56 buck per gal by then.
have to drive out the moped, or mini schooter,
kind of like dum & dummer.
see if we can get a trailer made up with a couple bycicle tires to pull out with our gear.

think it might be a good idea right now to invest in a couple 1000 gal tanks and fill them up.
and go to wallmart and buy out all the amo you can.

Thanks guys for all the efforts you have mustered up to respond to this post.
Man is it slow here or what?
19 weeks and counting.

I was drawn for Archery Elk 3 years straight, but now have 9 bonus points. I pray its time for another 3 year run here in Arizona.

I'd just like to get drawn once! This will be my first time to put in on any out of state hunts. I don't even really like to think about it as to not get my hopes up if I don't get drawn.

18 week,
God it getting tense,
so many things to start preparing for.
if I just get a couple thing a week done between then and now,
but which on do i start at.
carve some new calls.
sew up a new wall tent.
build a new wood burner stove.
wip up some new INSTANT ELK DECOYS.
do a once over on the trailer,
pack up the cooking gear.
tune up the dreaded 4 wheele.
the list go on and on.
I"ll try to mension a few more things to do in the coming weeks.
good luck with your preparations.
got ideas or things yhou think might help others
with their venture, lets hear them.

Well, it's only 25 weeks until I start chasing that big ol muley, IF the draw in Colorado is similar to last year. With all the changes who knows what to expect. We have 7 pp which would have guaranteed a tag last year. This year ???? Other than that I'll have to wait to see what New Mexico turns out. Been rejected 6 years in row for antelope in NM. Meanwhile I'll dream of spotting a big buck or two and go fishing. Headed for the Gulf of Mexico with my son for a 24-hr fishing trip the end of the month.

Phantom Hunter

WOW, 24 HR FISHING TRIP WOULD BE FUN.

looks like 17 weeks,
been on ebay looking at new camping garb,
cut my grass last weekend, I know that sounds like a exciting event, it truely was, its first hair cut.
ya know new yard new seed new groth.
picked up a new/used toy a bobcat 873,
have a ultralight 1981 robertson for sale,
kind of rough,
needs new sails.
mice got into the old ones while it was rolled up and stored for the winter.

Jim,

I'm going to rattle your cage. Do you ever think about setting camp back up in Coal Creek Basin? The Porky Cone will be full of elk about that time of year....and so will Sheep Mountain.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

BeanMan

DANG YOU BEANMAN,
I would love to hunt that area again.
I don't have horses or access to horses anymore.
I know and so do you that that area is so far back that few venture in that far and if the front is getting hit hard thats where the elk go.
Still have the making for a camp site stashed back there.
If you could line me up some horses I'd be back there in a heart beat.I would need (4) of them.
or (5) if you want to come along.

You still hunting the north west face of mt gunnison?
what season are you looking at?
I'm hopping for muzzy,
a co-worker and i applied, we both have 2 points, we're hopping thats enough.
The last couple years i have been hanging around the flattops.
but i sure do miss the wilderness area.
i have a friend and his wife going with me this season,
he's hunting she's filming and such.
if you here of some cheep horses to rent, say a 100.00 bucks per head for the week let me know.
hope you get the one your after this year.
Jim

Jim,

I don't have horses or mules anymore either so I haven't been back in there in 5 years. Too far to hunt it on foot much less carry one out on your back.

I've been hunting the west side of the Grand Mesa about 7 miles from home the last few years and doing pretty good at it.

Good luck,

Beanman

Beanman,
ya to far for my old bones also.
but with a horse or pack criters its dueable.
Good luck sir,

Gator, how ya been,
You never did let me know if you had any success using my decoys.
I've been hanging around the northeast face of the rimrock
just below the pass at dunkley
Have a 1000 acres of privet that abutts the public.
we are going to film a little of the bulls working the decoys this year,
Had a bandy bull trash 3 of my decoys last year,
don't know what his problem was, just wish i had it on film.
it was cool as hell, almost scary.
Think he'd been eating the mushrooms.
heck of a lot of elk, but way to many people.
horses would be good.
pull myself back up over th top a couple miles.
Gator are'nt you from New mex?
going to put out a few more decoys this year.
and give a couple to the fedderation again this year for auction.
good luck.
Jim

"7" days,
Then i will know for sure,
fingers crossed.
Today I was allowed to remove my shoulder sling.
What a relief.
Today it's been 43 days with out cigarettes.
Quite cold turkey.
WoW.
Need to start manufacturing more elk decoys,
just sold my last one I had yesterday.
Need to go back to school and take "spelling"
So many need toos, and not enough time.

Heard they were rescheduling the draws till after June 1st due to Memorial Day.

101, Just kidding, you are not alone I'm sure.

Brian

Brian,
You just trying to jump start my heart?
or just a little light on the subject?
You could be right though.
I heard that their computor system was down,
caught some peta bug yesterday and set the whole thing in a reject all mode.
they didn't notice it untill some one woundered why all the checks were being sent out,
and their buget went negitive.
heard it might be 4 to 6 weeks.
and they may have to notify every one,adn have have them send in a new licenes request.
the system first sorts by the age group, and i guess it kicked out every one whom was under the age of 47 years young as a negitive.
meaning they are all geting checks back.
sorry. guess i'm still in the running> fingers crossed.

They worked pretty good, I'm out in So Ca. I hunt in NM, but then I hunt alot of places. Should find out about CO, SOON.

YAHO.
Get out the elk calls and start calling.
Got a muzzy lic/bull.
Gee my hairs standing up on my neck,
Just pulled 3 gs.
15) weeks and counting.

Yaho.

Well get your shi* together,It will be here before you know it.
Piss pour planing makes for a Piss pour hunt.

(I'll never tell)
Smell those steaks cooking already.

gone fishing next week,
So I thought I might just mention next weel 11 weeks and counting.
Elk hunting is just around the corner guys and gals,
lets not get to excited about it.

THANKS FOR STARTING THE FEVER GOING ! IM SITTING HERE FROTHING AT THE MOUTH, CHILLS RUNNING UP MY SPINE , THE HAIR STANDING UP! I WONT BE ABLE TO SLEEP TILL I KNOW IF IM DRAWN AND I JUST PUT IN LAST NIGHT ! CAN I GET A ELK TAG 2 YEARS IN A ROW HERE IN AZ???????? PLEASE YOU GUY AND GALS FROM OTHER STATES DONT RUB IT TO HARD:eek: AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I got my first elk tag in my life last year and it was also the first elk hunt I've ever been on. Got a 6x6 in the 315" range. Now the real countdown begins. I'm not even eligible to apply for another bull elk tag in Nevada until the year 2015. 9 years to go and counting every minute. fatrooster.

just got a hit on my credit card for exactly $120.00. the exact price of a tag for elk, sheep or goat. seeing as how i have fourteen bonus points for elk i'm assuming an elk tag. been trying to draw for this area for twenty years (they just started the bonus point system fourteen years ago). the worst case scenario is one of the other tags, or my son drew a tag for one of them. the posted results don't come out until the sixteenth. in any case, the physical training intensity just went up a notch. if i sleep at all this week it'll be from complete exhaustion due to lack of sleep. i'm 51 years old and have never drawn a tag in my home state for anything other than deer and antelope. i just hope i can hold out for something 380 or bigger. good luck to everyone this year!! i was hoping to draw before i got to old to go. YAHOO! the only thing better now would be a tag for the early hunt.

drew a late season rifle tag (nov11th-26th) instead of my first choice for the early hunt (sept23rd-29th). i guess i should not have entered more than one choice, but i didn't think i'd get a tag either way. thought about buying my bonus point this year, but i didn't and here i am. called jim stahl(Mustang outfitters)and i guess i'll see if he can put me on something that first week. he's not real optimistic about finding anything with an intact rack left by then, but i think i'll be lucky to find any elk, let alone worry about a broken tine or two. i'm not concerned about gettin in the record books, but i would like something nice to hang on the wall. good luck to everyone else who drew and to those that did not, better luck next year.

GIRLBOWHUNTER,
You go girl,
Hope your draw is a success.
Just got back from fishing,
Supper time, lots of walleyes, and northerns.
Great to see others are starting to feel the hair raising on the back of the neck.
77 days,
chill, shiver, chill.

Yeah there is definately a shortage of girls who like game meat let alone like to bowhunt... Im dissapointed in the number of girls in their 20's that are into this. Shame on you who are fathers that didnt teach you daughters.

YOU BET cha.
My girls starten hunting as soon as they felt they wanted to,
usaly because i hunted and my friends had young boys that acompinied us.
so my girls were all over that,
and the computition between them was fun to watch.
heck my wife always catches more fish or larger ones.
girls go ahead and chime in if your interested.
same with yougogirl.

Well I just cleaned my 300 win mag from last years successful elk hunt. No it's ready for this falls hunt. Going for a monster in NM 16A. Now I just need to hit the treadmill, put away the riding mower and use the push mower with ankle weights on and drink a bit less beer. Oh, and practice shooting.

Things must of got a little crazy in here to have things disapear, trout ELKMASTER101. I live and breath hunting, and get just a excited about it as you guys.

11 weeks and I am in Northern NM archery elk hunting, cannot wait!

I am planning next years (2007) hunts already, and when I leave camp each year I pull the owners manual out of the glove box and make notes on what I would do differently for the next year!

Have fun guys, elk hunting is a truely awesome experiance.

Didnt start hunting till 3 years ago right after my divorce. Do agree with the drinking less beer and getting back into bow shape , the gym doesnt cut it.this is the first year ive been out of bow shape before season .Did get a Quad this year all the guys I hunt with had me climbing those hills last year, guess they wanted me to stay in shape or hog the hunt, like I would have taken the biggest deer, I would of saved it for them :D .The area I was in for my cow elk hunt last year was a hard hunt without a Quad of course I was by myself on that one for 5 days.

wow, hold on there girl, less beer.
desprate times lead to desprate means.
through away the bottle.
soke up reality, your fat.
get your buns out there and walk it off,
work your thighs untill they burn.
suck in your gut, through out your chest,
be proud your an american and you can do as you want.
hunt your tail off, don't worry about doing better than the others, if they want to be first in line then they must work at it to achieve what you've accomplished.
Less than 9 weeks, wow time has flown by, its after the 4th of July.
Opening seasons are just around the corner.
Are you ready or what.

OH yes Im ready, Ive got the fever! let the countdown begin. got my cam changed on my bow yesterday, sighting in today, and buying a helmut to really break in that quad tommarow. thanks to the monsoons the forests have opened up. its time to go play! Sharlin

7- WEEKS,
Just got back from a week in N.C.
Picked up a little fishing time on the coast.
A little historical site seeing.
stopped at cabela's on the way home,
think i need to do a road trip up there in the next couple weeks.
elk calls? do you guys use the rubber membrain streatched over the end of the grunt tube?
or do you use a mouth call reed into the tube?
I use the hard reed type.
I have problems with the mouth insert calls,
can't get them to sit in the roof of my mouth right.
looks like i need to start making decoys,
had a couple inquiries for them this last week while i was gone.
I'll let you know when INSTANT ELK are on e-bay.
less than 7 weeks.
holly buckets.
time to get going on the gear and camp setup don't you think.
make sure your ready.
I know a lot of you just do the guided hunt thing where you have no preporations to make other than make sure your bow or gun is packed.
I could but don't.
I figure if i can't do it on my own then its not worth doing.
so every thing must be planed for by myself and hunting partners.
We're just about ready.

41 days...
...and i'm giddier than a virgin on prom night...think im driving the old lady mad watching all the hornporn, going through equipment, calling from the bedroom, surfing the net on hunting sites and i also have my 5 yr old little girl trying to call...yes, i am one of those fathers that wants my lil girl to hunt and fish and so far she is on the right track =0)
oh, yeah, she even likes to eat deer, fish and elk...so hopefully daddy won't dissapoint his little angel this year and will bring some meat home...

solrac

ixsolracxi,
less than that now.
where are you headed,
you must be shooting bow?
I can hear them calling in my dreams already.
I have satalite Tv. there is lots of hunting,
my wife gets a little ticked off as i practice my call
while watching elk hunting.

5 WEEKS.
just around the corner.
how many of you ar hunting Colorado Bow?
how about muzzy?
first season gun?
WoW, just got a shiver that went up my spine.
I need to get my poop in a group.
set up my front camp and do a run thru
on my back camp.
pack my stuf and mark my packs.
complete once over on the four wheeler.
and check my flashlight batteries.
figure out my meals and gathering bank country goodies.
I have a list just need to start checking it off.

Iknow you hunters get sick every time this post jumps to the top.
Facts are facts 4 weeks and counting,
Let me know how many of you don't do any preporation?
Has any one ever used tompson water seal on canvas tent?
or is there something better.
