So I procrastinated applying for some hunts in New Mexico until yesterday in which I tried to use there online application process. I could not access there server all day. Any one else have the same problem? Will the Game and Fish help out in this regard or is it you snooze you loose?

Ya, i had the same problem, my dad kept putting off applying until yesterday, then we both sat at the computer trying to get the web page to work for 3 hours. iam so glad i got mine done 3 weeks ago. iam not sure if the game and fish will help out. hopefuly its not you snooze ya lose, and they will do somthing. But its highly unliky.

I tried for 3-4 hours also with no luck.

Did they extend the online option a few days last year?

I've got my picks made, now I just need them to take my money and info.

Well, my reason "excuse" is that this is my first year applying for Elk in NM. I have put in for Lopers three weeks ago.

After finally talking a hunting partner into applying with me for elk. That was a week and a half ago. I just returned from a week long vacation. I returned to SLC late Friday night.

I woke up the next morning knowing that I needed to apply. Trying all day but not getting through. I actually took my copy of Garth Carthers Huntin Fool on vacation with me to help with ideas/do homework on Elk for NM. I know it sounds crazy, but five days on a cruise ship, you find spare time in between cocktails and buffets.

So there is your answer. It literally turned into a last minute/couple of days thing for me. If I don't get in, oh well. Planning on drawing my LE archery elk in Ut. anyways. Ya right! Wishful thinking, or dreaming more like it.

Good luck in the draws guys, if you get in anyways.

Come on New Mexico, I got 6 more dollars for ya that's just burning a hole in my pocket!!!

Come on guys! Don't you know that NM uses an Apple 2c for all of the online apps? It can only handle two apps at a time. Everyone in this state probably waits until the last minute. Most people are just now finding out that you have to apply for deer now. That really helps things, My huntin buddy couldn't get anyone at F&G to return his calls. I told him its because the whole staff is sitting around the apps computer massaging it,.

No they will not run any extra days , and no they did not run any extra days last year either . It was asked for last year , but the director said they run the deadline info on the 3 news channels for NM as well, the dealine date is printed numerous times through out the proclamation . It was printed in a few news papers too , I know it doesn't help non residents , but those deadlines are given and kept too .Sorry for those of you who missed it , I can only tell you your only chance now is to look for land owner tags...

The application period should certainly be extended at least one day to allow those who attempted to apply --within the published application period-- but could not because of a system failure. This is not a "you snooze you lose" issue. No one is saying that the application period should be extended for those who forgot to apply on April 8 and tried to do it on April 9. The deadline was published and, therefore, individuals should be permitted to rely on that. This situation is no different than if New Mexico informed hunters they could drop applications off at drop-boxes at game and fish offices up through midnight on April 8th, but then, due to an oversight, left the drop-box locked on that last day thereby precluding submission of an otherwise timely application. Again, this is not a "you snooze you lose" issue. New Mexico should apologize for the failure and allow hunters to submit their application.

p.s. I did get my application in last week...

I just got off the phone with Game and Fish and they said that to keep on looking at the SITE and see if they post an extention! But that nothing was forsure. I think it is unfair that they have a deadline and then computers shut down a day earlier! Of course we have plenty of time, but a deadline is a DEADLINE April 8th MIDNIGHT!! They should obey by it just like we have to follow it.

OH WELL!! I got mine in a couple of weeks ago so maybe my chances will be better!!

I feel for some of my buddies that didn't get in. Good Luck to ALL!!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-10-06 AT 11:46AM (MST)[p]I seriously doubt the servers shut down, just too many procrastinators all trying at the same time.
There is probably a post right on this board warning of the last day blues.

"April 8 at Midnight M.S.T. was the deadline to apply for antelope, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, ibex and javelina hunts. Thank you for your application."

You're very welcome and I look foreward to hunting your great Elk state.

Thank you New Mexico Fish and Game!!!!!!!

I really respect them for there decision for allowing those who could not access there web page to apply.

With a whole lot of luck, maybe I will be hunting a Wapiti in the Land of Enchantment this Fall. My chances of drawing will be slim and none, but the old addage of you can't draw if you don't apply holds true.

Good luck to all and thank you for your responses!

I think this is a crock of sh!t to extend the date...here is my letter to the director...

Mr. Thompson,

I am writing this letter to express my frustration and anger at the Dept. of Game and Fish to extend the dates for permits of elk and deer. I believe this is wrong and unjust to those of us that made the deadline in time. The New Mexico people and others had four months to apply for their hunts. The people who put in early should not have their chances made harder by you extending the date for more money. You posted the dates on the internet, the pamphlet and other means to let everyone know the date; I hope this never happens again. Are you going to extend the date after everyone waits until Thursday night and your computers can't handle the load again??? This is a classic example of the good and prepared people paying the price for those who are not!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-11-06 AT 09:38AM (MST)[p]From the New Mex F&G site:
"*** Deadline extended for deer permits, elk, antelope, bighorn sheep, ibex and javelina licenses

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish has extended its big game Special Hunts application deadline through midnight Thursday, April 13, due to an overwhelming response to the online application system that peaked at 12 applications per minute and caused some applicants to miss the midnight April 8 deadline. "

I just tried it and they took my money so I guess I'm in the draw

That is so unfair. If hunting New Mexico is so important make the effort to get your application in on time and if the computer can't handle the load tuff ##it. Early bird usually gets the worm, but not in this case, because of a bunch of winers the guys that took the time to apply early or before the last day get punished. What a crock, deadlines are there for a reason why can't everyone play on the same field. Just not fair.

well I recieved a letter back from Mr. Thompson- I don't know if i can post it but i wrote him back again

Mr. Thompson,
First of all thank you for your quick response, it is nice to know you are taking care of peoples needs and concerns and going the extra mile. You could have easily blown me off.

I still disagree with the decision of extending the dates. If you would have stayed with your first deadline it would have taught people not to wait for the last minute to apply. As in all things in life it does not pay to wait for the last minute. If you would have stayed with your first deadline, it would have set a good example and next year you might not have had the same problem, now we know that if you have this problem you will always extend the date. Also if the Dept. of Game and Fish cannot handle this work load then maybe you should consider not taking online applications. It does no good to anyone to advertise a service and not have the service perform up to par.

Again thank you for your time

...well good luck to all this year and there is nothing we can do but grin and shrug it off

Nothin more than BS , I have a friend who works there and she said it was a bunch of bologna extending the deadline . The servers never went down , never , but 700+ applications per hour during the last 10 hours made it hard to get through . She said they could have reopened and extended for 24/48 hours , but not till next thursday , it only allowed people who totally missed the date to get back in the game , total bull$hit!

She said they got in 1700 more yesterday alone , and expect to get over 100,000 on line apps total by thursday.....Stupid a$$ director!!!

I'm not here to voice my opinion one way or the other. I would like to say that all who are concerned should attend the next State Game Commission meeting. Voice your opinions there because that is where it makes the most difference. There will be meetings in May (Clayton), and in June (Albuquerque). Check the NMDGF website under the Commission page.

Good luck in the draw.

ELK4YOU your right , thats where I'll be , I spoke to the G&F this afternoon and couldn't get an answer as to why it was extended for so long other than it was the directors call...
